MightySkate
^^Very true. The same concept that applies to CPU fans applies to the PS3 as well. The more data it needs to crunch the faster it needs to stay cool.

Ad1tya
I dont really think Fan Noise is anything to worry about. Its just noise after all. The fan will spin faster, if the Ambient (Room) Temperatures are quite high which is quite possible in the day, in almost every city in India. So it gets hot very fast, and needs to cool more, thus Fan = Runs faster. vconi, Was the Service centre running an AC at the time and your not running an AC at your home, when your playing on the PS3?... I think the answer is right there.
gman
the best solution is to ensure that u have aircon in the room u r using ur ps3, have noticed that when i play with aircon on my ps3 does not heat up

Yes the service center was runnng AC and it was quite cold. at that time i never believed that cud have been the issue ! i take it home and bingo -there is the noise again... and no AC at home ! the best i cud do was open the windows..! recently i have been noticing that the fan noise does not come up whilst playng games as often as it used to. maybe its something to do with the climate..it has started raining i guess! m-JeRi
^^^ yes it does... The temperature sensors are highly dynamic and will repsond to the surrounding climate..... So u did solve the problem.....
Ad1tya
Bingo there. Ive played on my PS3 in the AC (~22C) it makes no noise, and doesnt get hot at all. Also, Ive used it without the AC (~27-28C) it still made no noise, but got a little warm on the side.

Fan makes strong noises in two scenario: 1. when internal temp rises.. the fan makes sound louder as if fans r running faster. 2. when the fan has to struggle for inhaling air from front vents.... the fan sounds strained. 1st scenario should not be chronic and may vary with type of activity/software running on PS3 2nd scenario means u need to give PS3 enough room to breath n circulate air in the internal system..this scenario should be avoided at all costs.. It strains fan & processor which leads to heat buildup in PS3 eventually baking internal circuits, solders n joints.. To sum up it all up.. clean the vents, keep the PS3 in the position it can get more air to suck... n vertical position just press the fan-side edge of PS3 muffling the vibration hence, reducing just noise not the problem/damage... this is summery of my online research... PS3 IS NOT A MULTIMEDIA POWER HOUSE, ITS A POSSESSION OBSESSION & 2ND YOUNGER BROTHA' (1st one being PS2) all in love with there PS3s raise their hands!!! (so many or you guys raising both the hands in eXcitement??) :jumpy:
trivisingh
check if you are keeping your PS3 in a place where it is getting hot?....also if you are keeping any other thing on top of it or close to it due to which it might not get ventilated enough
TechGuitar
I hear my ps3 fan only when there is nothing running in the room and there is complete silence. As compared to any other console, the ps3 is much much silent. I noticed that the bottom(when kept horizontal) of my ps3 used to get hot so i kept it vertically. It is advised to keep it vertical
Falcon
^^ Is it really advised (Officially) to keep PS3 vertically??
