Activision's Next Gen Full Tech Demo Revealed

Recommended Posts

A technology demo shown at this year's Game Developer's Conference shows some amazing technology.

Ever wondered what Activision will be bringing to the table in the next-generation? Last month, we reported on what appear to be the beginnings of this technology presentation, which was shown at this year's Game Developer's Conference. Call of Duty and Activision will be an even bigger force to be reckoned with if they can utilize this technology in-game.

At one point in the presentation, it is revealed that the developers had to tone things down at some points to make sure they didn't make their creations " too perfect." They said that too-perfect renderings created images that looked more fake than they did real, so it is likely that there is even more growing room for the technology coming our way. Though, that goes without saying, considering there are some who say that the current generation of consoles haven't even been used to their fullest yet.

One of the most amazing segments shown occurs at around 6:45 into the presentation, where discussion is centered around "The Human Pores." The presenter showed an electron micrograph photo of a human's pore, and said that we thought there was no way we could achieve this much detail, "But I was wrong." He then showed us a side-by-side comparison of two faces, one real and one made through next-generation rendering. The two were almost indiscernible.

Now the only question that remains is whether or not this technology will actually translate over to the finished product. Promises of graphics such as these are usually dampened in one way or another, but we're hoping that this is representative of what we will see in the next console cycle.
