sarthak
Hi Guys, I'm having a peculiar problem with my PS3 Slim which replaced my Phat PS3 in the month of May in 2011 due to Cromas Epic Extended Warranty. Here goes my problem, I have spent 2 days on it and have absolutely gone nowhere with it. My PS3 Slim is connected with a 40" Samsung 5 series Full HD TV purchased circa 2009. It has been working on the same for roughly 2 years now without a hitch. In the past weeks I had noticed random 2 second bursts of the screen going blank whilst playing the PS3. Day before yesterday what I feared the most happened, as I pushed the PS3s power button, turned the TV on and sat back hoping to see the XMB it never came. So I Shut the PS3 restarted it again and the same thing repeated. So again, I switched it off but this time held on to the Power Button for 5 seconds i.e. to her the 2nd beep for a video refresh, yet again nothing happened. So switched it off and let it be. Tried again in a few hours and same thing. So In short, PS3 powers on, you can see its reading the HDD and has connected to the Wi-Fi (through the yellow and green lights blinking) but you cant see anything. I concluded either the HDMI's gone bad, TVs HDMI port is gone Kaput or the PS3s HDMI port is having issues. Since the TV is mounted, I used 3 different HDMI cables to connect the PS3 to the TVs side HDMI port but the same thing prevailed. To rule out the HDMI cable I exchanged the cable with the TATA Sky HD Box and the results were same i.e. PS3 nothing and TSHD Box displaying the usual 1080i content that it does. So after this little experiment I was sure that there was something awry with the PS3s HDMI port. Meanwhile I was also googling for solutions and discovered something called a handshake problem, so to rectify that I switched the TV off, took out its plug and let it refresh itself. I took it to another Samsung TV which is only HD Ready, here also the same thing. Finally hooked it up to a Sony 55" Full HDTV, since it is also wall mounted I only had the side ports to work with. I did strike some success here as the PS3 did come on and was showing 576P and asking "I have an HDMI connected & would I like to use it for video" I clicked yes and it proceeded and reverted back to 576P which looks ghastly at that size. I manually went into the settings and tried to push 720P & 1080i which I was successful in, but as soon as I tried pushing 1080P it would just remain blank and nothing would happen. Again fearing that maybe the side ports don't push 1080P (paranoia was setting in) I wanted to use one of the already in-use HDMI Ports, since I know that TS HD Box only pushes 1080i, I took out the HDMI cord which was connected with a Phillips Sound Bar which reads Blu-Ray & pushes 1080P. After connecting the PS3 through this HDMI, I got a bit different result as the PS3 shows up as connected, but only displays itself in 576P and when I try to manually push (display settings - custom) anything higher even 720P or 1080i or 1080P it would just come back to the screen displaying what all resolutions can be selected. I've even restored my settings to default and gone through the whole initial Set-Up phase but still the same blank screen for anything higher than HDMI. What i'm most surprised and shocked about is that the PS3 is displaying 576P through HDMI but no other resolution. By my little knowledge it would seem that the HDMI port is also working like the other HDMI cable I used and the other TVs. So what is wrong then ??? I'm at my wits end as to what to try more. Any help would be much appreciated. I know the post is huge but I think all this is required. TL;DR - So in short 1. PS3 Slim connected to a Samsung Full HDTV - being used for 2 years - suddenly stops displaying anything - complete blank screen 2. Test different HDMI cable and ports still the same. 3. Try on 2 different TVs a Samsung HD Ready and a Sony Full HD - Same thing on the Samsung i.e. no dice. 4. On the Sony other hand, displays but only 576P through HDMI try to push more manually just reverts to resolution selection screen. Things I've already tried - 1. Use different HDMI cables of varying length, both gold plated as well as normal. 2. Use different TVs. 3. Restored settings to default on my PS3. 4. Cleaned the PS3's HDMI port. 5. While turning the PS3 on have held on to the power button for the second beep which refreshes the Video settings. Any help would be much appreciated and again I am sorry for the huge post. AtheK
Seems to be issue with PS3 and not with your ports or cable, is it in warranty?
abhi90
I have the same problem, the ps3 doesn't work after I had my slim replaced. I have a full hd samsung tv, so there definitely is some issue between them two DO one thing, disconnect all devies for about 30 minutes atleast and then reconnect it, disconnect every wire from ps3. I've read that you had disconnected the ps3 but try it for atleast 30 mins or an hour.
sarthak
@AtheK - Thanks for your reply, No Its not, since this one was replaced in the 3rd year of my extended warranty for the phat. @abhinit90 - Ya I think its a Handshake problem between but then again its not really working with a Sony HDTV also and its not like it hasn't worked at all, since it was working for the past 2+ years in the same combination though in a different room. And I have kept it disconnected for the past hour and whole of last night. Have disconnected it again now. Lets see. My Brother is also getting his PS3 over to my place in a couple of hours so lets see how that goes on the TVs.
abhi90
also do one thing, disconnect the hdmi at only tv's end, let the hdmi stay in the ps3 turn on the ps3 and turn on the tv, when the ps3 is on for about 10 seconds, insert the hdmi cord into the tv try and let me know, works for me

sarthak
Update: My brother just got his PS3 over, tried it on all ports and also tried the X-Box 360. Both worked flawlessly. Tried starting mine the way you said Abhinit90 but to no avail. So, in conclusion the PS3s HDMI port has gone kaput or their is something gone wrong in the motherboard. What are my remedies now ?? give to the service centre and pay whatever 'X' amount they ask for a new one because as far as I am aware they do not repair in India, or should I get it done from outside ?? Thanks for the help guys.
abhi90
If it was replaced under warranty, is the original set still under warranty? On a curious note, did you restore the contents of the older ps3 in the newer one? Most probably the PS3 is's hdmi is kaput, try tellling the sony people that the newer sh*t doesn't work. Take your PS3 to your brother's tv and run everything with his setup, i.e. all of his cables, just take out his ps3 and reset your ps3's video output by holding the power button and try it. sarthak
@abhinit90 - thanks for all the suggestions man. Ya it was replaced under warranty, i bought my Phat PS3 in 2008 Nov with extended 2 year warranty from Croma, which saved my a*s in May 2011. Nope did not restore any content, started completely afresh. I do not think that it is only the HDMI, I am guessing there is something more, maybe something in the Motherboard because if the HDMI port had gone Kaput then it wont even display 576P or output Audio ??? only pushing more than that or 1080P to be precise is a problem. Ya that is the plan for tuesday evening, hopefully ill come up with some solution till then or one of you guys will Thanks again man
abhi90
^^Haha I'm in the same boat, the older fat PS3 worked perfectly with my tv, the newer slim doesn't work, I even got it replaced but it just simply doesn't unless I take the cord out and insert it again Updated the TV's FW without any success :|
