wahi
so heres the story, here i was very happy that i bought a ps3 and also managed to get my hands on GTA on the day it was released. except it wouldnt play. after a long search heres what i found. my player is US NTSC, but my game is PAL and my TV is SDTV. and as one of the websites i found states that this is not a problem with only GTA 4, but many others. the text off the other site will explain this much better : 2 of the games/demos downloaded from PSN EU is not working on NTSC console hooked to SDTV. The games are Tekken and GTHD. However these titles work great on HDTV setup. I assumed that other demos/titles on PSN EU store are multicoded with PAL and NTSC and HD. In SDTV mode, the console will force-output its native console signal (NTSC), but in HDTV mode, the NTSC/PAL restriction is not an issue anymore. As we know that some PSN contents are affected with this limitation, I wonder if this problem also affect disc-based titles? I know that Sony already stated PS3 games are region-free, but are they region-free for HDTV only or including SDTV as well? UPDATE: *Certain disc-based PS3 games are affected as well* ------------------------------ These are what I believe happened for PS3 (BD games & PSN contents, not movie DVDs & PS1 & PS2 games): The contents are either coded in: 1) NTSC-SD and HD 2) PAL-SD and HD 3) NTSC-SD and PAL-SD and HD *some contents are NTSC-less/PAL-less but also in SD, and this is not a concern Case a: NTSC console + HDTV + Multicoded contents (NTSC+PAL+HD coded) The console will try to output in HD mode to HDTV = titles worked Case b: NTSC console + SDTV + Multicoded contents (same as above) The console will output NTSC-SD content only = titles worked Case c: NTSC console + SDTV + PAL-coded contents (PAL-SD and HD) The console will refuse to play the PAL-SD content ["This game is not supported. (80028F10)"] or ["You cannot play this game at the current video output setting. (80028F10)"] on new firmware. #All of the above are purely based on my observation/conjecture, and I might be wrong. Please correct if you feel there is anything wrong -------------------------------- So anyone here can confirm which EU/PAL PS3 disc-based games worked with NTSC consoles in SDTV setup? This might save someone that import consoles and play locally-released titles from buying a non-working disc title. Gamestores here do not accept opened games for return. I hope this post can collate and compile list of working games on SDTV. ===================================== PSN EU/UK/PAL CONTENTS: ------------------------------------------ List of unaffected titles: ------------------------------------------ Blast Factor (demo & full) Calling All Cars Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2 (demo) Heavenly Sword (demo) Mortal Kombat 2 Lemmings (demo & full) Super Rub-a-Dub (demo & full) Super StarDust HD (demo & full) Warhawk ------------------------------------------ List of affected titles: ------------------------------------------ Tekken: Dark Resurrection GTHD 2.0 The Simpsons (demo) ===================================== BLU-RAY BASED GAMES: ------------------------------------------ List of unaffected titles: ------------------------------------------ Assassin's Creed (PAL) Burnout Paradise (PAL) Call of Duty 4 (PAL) Clive Barker's Jericho (PAL) Club, The (PAL) Darkness (The), (PAL) Dark Sector (PAL) Def Jam: ICON (PAL) Devil May Cry 4 (PAL) Fifa 08 (PAL) Fight Night Round 3 (PAL) Formula 1: Championship Edition (PAL) Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (PAL) Harry Potter 5 (PAL) Kane and Lynch (PAL) Lego Star Wars: Complete Saga(PAL) Lost Planet: Extreme Condition (PAL) Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (PAL) MotorStorm (PAL) NBA Live 08 (PAL) Need For Speed Carbon (PAL) Need For Speed ProStreet (PAL) Ninja Gaiden Sigma (PAL) Orange Box, The (PAL) Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 (PAL) Race Driver: GRID (PAL) Rainbow Six: Vegas (PAL) Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction (PAL) Resistance: Fall of Man (PAL) Sega Rally Revo (PAL) SingStar (PAL) Skate (PAL) Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08 (PAL) Transformers: The Game (PAL) Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (PAL) Virtua Fighter 5 (PAL) Virtua Tennis 3 (PAL) ----------------------------------------- List of affected titles: ----------------------------------------- Army of Two (PAL) Beowulf (PAL) Bladestorm (PAL) Call of Duty 3 (PAL) Dynasty Warriors: Gundam (PAL) Enemy Territory: Quake Wars (PAL) F.E.A.R (PAL) Folklore (PAL) Grand Theft Auto IV (PAL) Gran Turismo 5: Prologue (PAL) Heavenly Sword (PAL) Marvel: Ultimate Alliance (PAL) NBA2K7 (PAL) NHL 08 (PAL) Oblivion (PAL) WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2008 (PAL) Spider-Man (PAL) Tiger Woods 07 (PAL) Turning Point: Fall of Liberty (PAL)
CarbonCore
Its not only related to PS3 games and nothing to do with region coding of the games. If you put a region free DVD coded with PAL resolutions, it'll give same error on NTSC PS3. I've got bunch of bootleg DVDs bought from China (bootlegs are almost always region free) and most of them don't play in PS3, same video res error. The ones that work in PS3 show 480p, its got nothing to do with firmware. Those with PAL PS3s, can you guys check if you have 480i/p option in display settings or is it replaced by 576i/p? Harsahil
^^^^if the problem is wid NTSC/J console in playing PAL games, its highly probable that same will happen when u try to play NTSC game on a PAL console. its better that u try before u buy
