dranjithk
Can someone tell me if this device acts as both receiver and transmitter? The need is to convert my desktop into a wifi hotspot so that I can access wifi from my desktop's Internet connection. I'm asking this because most transmitters have a small antenna.. I don't see one on this device. However, the product description says the maximum transmission rate is 150 Mbps. Also, if there's a better transmitter, please suggest. Thanks!! ALPHA17
Can you suggest a good transmitter? Just get a good router mate and you should be set. One wire goes into the PC, there will be up-to three more wired connections possible or a handful of wireless systems that can be tethered with the same till wherever the range extends. Options you can have a look @flipkart. Multiple antennas are provided for improved signal strength and range, also MIMO feature is dependent on the. Suggest you try to get N150 / N300 routers over all else.
dranjithk
Well, I was looking for a USB transmitter for my office comp.. My workstation is so far off from the access point, I don't get a steady connection! Obviously I cant use a router at office. Sorry, I should've mentioned that in the OP. Will try to locate something more amiable. You can also look at devices like such, D-Link D-505 multi-purpose network device. I think it has a range-extension capability, read up on it and see if this fits your need. Cheerio!
Shantz
@ranjith: You see transmit specifications being mentioned because any wifi device has to be a transmitter as well as receiver (it needs to download as well as upload ) BTW, you would be able to use this to make an ad-hoc network if you want. But there are several limitations in a ad-hoc network and it might not always work with all devices and may also pose lot of issues/bw constraints. If you don't want to buy a router, look for a device that explicitly mentions that it can act as a hotspot. But yes, as alpha mentioned, a router is a better option. Edit: Just noticed your situation. Also see that this might be limited by your office's router. So even if you buy a device with a high gain antenna, it might or might not work. At least there is no way to definitely know if something will definitely work for you.
dranjithk
Lolz, guess I'm in a spot. I agree, there's no way I could find out without trying. The best thing I can do at the moment is get a device from the local IT market. Will post my finding here.
