John Carmack has left id Software for Oculus

Recommended Posts

John Carmach has left id Software to join Oculus VR. The company is known for its popular Rift brand of VR headsets.

Carmack is now Oculus VR’s new chief technology officer.

In a statement, the id Software co-founder said, “The dream of VR has been simmering in the background for decades, but now, the people and technologies are finally aligning to allow it to reach the potential we imagined.

“I’m extremely excited to make a mark in what I truly believe will be a transformative technology.”

Carmack has expressed a great deal of public interest in Oculus Rift since he announced it would be compatible with Doom 3: BFG Edition last year. Last August we reported that Doom 4 will also use the device.

id Software was founded by John Carmack, John Romero, Tom Hall, and Adrian Carmack. It is best known for its work on both the Doom and Quake series, as well as recent shooter Rage.

As discussed in the superb book on id’s history ‘Masters of Doom’ – seriously, read it – it was always Carmack’s desire to make the Holodek concept from Star Trek a reality through games. In Oculus Rift, he’ll get one step closer to that dream.

He's not left id.

Carmack leaving id makes for a good, clickworthy headline, but people are kind of making that detail up. We don't know yet.

This is when I dislike the gaming press. That detail was invented just to get a better headline. No one checked. It happened in SECONDS.

Update: We've been provided the following statement from Bethesda.

John has long been interested in the work at Oculus VR and wishes to spend time on that project. The technical leadership he provides for games in development at id Software is unaffected.

I think this is a win win for everyone. OR sounds awesome. And JC is a good fit for that, tech genius that he is.

Cant wait until that sucker goes mass market. Its on top of my "To buy" list.
