Game over for Games for Windows Live - Shutting down finally.

Recommended Posts

Play as you download, family sharing, gifting someone a digital game etc. should come to steam too. All this is sure to become a standard on the next gen consoles.

BEAM ke maje :P

The state of FTTH in NCR is pathetic. I pay 1600 for a 10 mbps connection with 50 gb fup. I hope when beam comes here the rates fall. Competition is always good.

THIS !!! there was a conversation for this in in the inter connection thread ...abt how airtel and all shld improve their services and how beam should be avail everywhere in India :|

edit:oops....... lagta hai mai late aaya is conversation mai

Umm this only says the store is shutting down. The DRM on the old games stays. New games are still free to pick the GFWL DRM.

And that doesnt really make any difference. Lets face it, no one really buys from that store.

On second, valve will get to learn a lot of things from consoles for DDLs.

If VALVe would not have started STEAM forget about PSN+ and XBox LIVE ever existing.

In fact, next gen of consoles will have a lot of focus on digital, they will find innovative ways to sideline traditional retailers.

Love to see this happen, especially since reselling and used games reverted to quid pro quo after MicroSoft kicked up a storm by proposing to cut off this.

- Play as you download feature -- Don't see its necessity, basically because pre-load kills the main reason for its existence. If you want to download anything on STEAM, manual control can be exercised.
- Digital game sharing(if makes its way to Xbone) -- Not happening. DRM is evil and I would prefer less meddling otherwise we might end up paying the price.
- Premium sub models (PS+ insta game collection, or free games for GOLD on Xbox) -- Definitely not needed. STEAM makes more than enough with the relative monopoly it has on PC digital distribution and I think this model sucks. Regular sales and engaging with the audience is enough to generate revenue and keep the community expanding.

And why is that??

Because they were the first digital distribution network. Simple.

Before that retail held a stranglehold on PC sales just like it does with consoles for now. You could trade / resell PC games with their original 'keys'. Several notably inept DRM solutions like TAGES were utilised which did not help the cause of retail in PC.

He's going by the logic 'if' the first cave man who ignited fire wouldn't have done that

All of us would still be living in caves & eating raw meet in 2013

Thanks for putting it in the words you have accepted for yourself.

lol?? Xbox live was released before Steam

They werent the first.

Are they influential? Yes very much. But to say XBL and PSN wouldn't have existed if Steam didn't come out is ridiculous. Steam was ridiculed and hated for a good portion of its initial release.

The Dreamcast had already started selling DLC and had an Online network service on consoles. which MS continued pushing with Xbox Live. Unlike PCs consoles cant be suddenly upgraded to support a new XBL,PSN..etc. they had to wait for the next gen cycle to implement it. Doesn't mean they weren't already working on it or ripping of steam. Even the Genesis had a PSNPlus-like subscription based gaming back in freakin 94 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega_Channel. This doesnt mean PSN+ woudnt have existed without it lol.

So yes Console makers never went , oh hey look Steam is awesome. Lets make our own version of it. They have been in development for quite sometime , this isn't the kind of thing you can make in a year after looking at Steam.

Also Steam did not release in 2003 with all the features you see today.

No they were not. Not on the PC, not in video games. DDN's have existed since the 80's.

They are certainly one of the most influential services.

What was on PC before STEAM for digital distribution, I would like to know.

Maybe video game wise of I am wrong but what was there before STEAM on PC?

I got my first PC in 2002, started gaming 2006 (and have stuck with PC only), pardon my lack of knowledge about consoles like the Dreamcast and Genesis.

LOL??? Xbox live was released before Steam

LoL good Sir, then pray tell me why are we having this argument.

STEAM is the the premier system on PC and nothing on the horizon is going to upset this. And that is what I am bothered about.

XBox Live had a one year head start on STEAM, nice to know, does it affect me, no, am I bothered about it, maybe but I am certainly not bothered about GFWL.

Are they influential? Yes very much. But to say XBL and PSN wouldn't have existed if Steam didn't come out is ridiculous. Steam was ridiculed and hated for a good portion of its initial release.

Just like ORIGIN and UPlay! today I know. The fact is that other parties are playing catch up with STEAM in majority of the feature basket when they should do something that attracts people to their services than put up walls saying only available on their proprietary service.

Also Steam did not release in 2003 with all the features you see today.

Rome was not built in a single day. I know that.

i still feel that alpha didnt get the feature.

I got what you meant, you can download a certain portion of the game and start playing it while the rest downloads. Now what issues I raise against it are,

  • PC games will have to be made with such a feature in mind. That means new formats and file structures.
  • What happens when the games in contention are mostly multi-player centric. Call of Duty, BattleField 3, DoTA 2, Counter Strike and Red Orchestra 2? How will you play titles like ROME II when it does not have any definitive story-mode as such, you will show restrain and download the full game or no (or at-least the multi-player content)?
  • Is there any guarantee that by the time you finish the pre-downloaded portion of your game will the rest be ready or will a slow internet connection play spoil-sport?

Nothing is perfect, no not even STEAM, certainly not me and you have to compromise from time to time, that is what I am trying to high-light. If you think I am still wrong, await your response.

And LOL, you were the one who made a sweeping statement like " xbl/psn wouldn't exist without steam". You kinda initiated this "argument".

Still before STEAM I doubt anyone realised the potential of a digital distribution network.

PSN came in 2006, so yeah, SONY held off to see if the MicroSoft and VALVe gambit paid off. And as far as I am aware it is still considered sub-par to XBox LIVE or I am wrong.

As Shadow has said, it was scorned, now look where it is.

If you look, the argument started when some of the console folks decided to deride STEAM, saying that it could pick up much from your services, in that case, let me ask if SONY or MicroSoft plan to,

  • make membership and full usage free of charge?
  • introduce STEAM Workshop equivalent MOD support systems in PSN and LIVE?
  • do they plan to have a Greenlight equivalent?
  • any plans to hold regular sales like the ones that happen on STEAM?
  • Do they plan to certify games for particular controller systems / schemes and highlight it, a la BIG PICTURE mode on STEAM?

PSN only came in 2006 cos freeckin ps3 came in 2006

If XBox LIVE would have flopped they would not have launched a competing service.

Like shadow rightly pointed they need to wait for a hardware switch b4 implementing services like these

PSN & XBL are being upgraded now only for next systems not previous ones

Thankfully no such bull on PC's.

And PSN was never there for the PS2 or was it?

& PSN is easily the one to match Steam in every way possible
Online is free(ATM) & a 50$ a year fee gives you about 30 free games divided in months

So you pay ~₹3000/- -->₹3500/- and get access to these games all around the year or just per month?

Also it has far Surpassed XBL in every way coz digital dloads are not even available on XBL day 1(not even first six months in some cases)

I don't use the service, I am going on hearsay from iVG itself, now I cannot go back to the various threads and scrounge out the posts.

But thanks.

I don't know what are we discussing here.

Only point I wanted to make was that its good to have players, it gives users options and brings competition.

Monopoly of one player isn't good. MS having pioneered a lot of stuff in online dept, should have been a good competitor to Steam, had they supported the GFWL bit better.
