Harish Sangwan
I am planning to buy a PS3 and had a few queries related to it. One of them being, is there some way to play .mkv files through PS3? Also, in the first post of this topic it was mentioned that all the games are region free so far. But, blu-ray discs could be region locked, do I have to worry about it or most movies will be available in PAL version too?

Harish Sangwan
Did read about some media server software that helps stream movies via network from the PC, you talking about the same thing? I edited my previous post and wanted some info regarding the Blu-ray discs being region locked. Could tell me about that?
AngerSmash
u can use tversity i guess
Joy
Yes Blu-ray movies which are region locked like A or B , won't play on PS3 bought from India.SP3 games have no such region problems if u use HDMI as video output. So best u can do is buy only those movies which have Region Free mentioned.Blu ray movies bought within India won't have any problem but online shopping portals like amazon , ebay etc. u need to check before buying. You cannot directly play mkv files on PS3 , easiest thing is to convert them into mpg or mp4 with mkv2vob app , its a free app , it only muxes the video and converts dts audio in ac3 which takes only couple of minutes depending on the length of the movie. Here's a step by step guide with pics for using mkv2vob - http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/how_to_convert_mkv_files_to_sony_playstation_3_ps3_using_mkv2vob.cfm Another way to stream the mkv files using TVersity - http://www.afterdawn.com/software/audio_video/media_servers/tversity.cfm Cheers. Harish Sangwan
Thanks for the elaborated reply guys... My other concern is that I do not have an LCD Tv or monitor as of now but would be getting a 23" Monitor a month or two after PS3 purchase. I have done some gaming on PS3 on my current Tv and it just doesnt do any justice to the games quality. I cant buy everything together due budget constraint. And then theres also the cost of speakers that I will have to consider, when I buy the monitor. I am kinda confused coz of this. What do you guys suggest? Joy
All LCD monitors do come with HDMI port these days , u can easily find a good 22" to 24" monitor within 12-15k. Dell is probably the the best brand , u can try other as well like Samsang , BenQ etc. I would recommend the Dell S2409W.
Harish Sangwan
I was actually looking at Samsung P2370MS for a monitor. It has all the inputs that I can ask for. It also has component input, which means I can use it as a Tv with the help of a Tv tuner. But my confusion is not about what model LCD to buy, its about what should I be buying first. Coz the combined cost of LCD+Tv tuner/STB+Speakers+PS3 is pretty high for me. Also, how good is the gaming experience on a 23"-24" LCD monitor? Joy
I personally game on a DELL SP2208W LCD monitor , bought in 2008 for 18k, its faptastic , response time is 2ms and PS3 games look great in HDMI. If ur looking for TV cum PC monitor then go fort he one u looking at , otherwise as a PC only monitor along with console gaming Dell is a great option. Harish Sangwan
Some monitors come with in-built speakers. How good they generally are?
Joy
Some monitors come with in-built speakers. How good they generally are? Decent at best , as good as any regular 2.1 Creative or Altec Lansing speaker quality without subwoofer. I don't know for other brands but Dell has a additional Sound bar accessory which can be attached at the bottom of the monitor panel , I didn't buy it cause it was extra spending of 2k and I already had a good set of speakers and two great headphones. If u buying the monitor for gaming and watching blu-ray movies on ps3 , don't bother with in-built speakers in monitors , they are generic speakers and only good for a little bit of casual music/movies etc.. The Assassin
Some monitors come with in-built speakers. How good they generally are? Not good.BenQ monitors are good and cheap also.
Harish Sangwan
As mentioned earlier, I wouldnt be buying monitor+speakers+PS3 at a time. It will be too much expenditure for me. Though I will spend on the monitor+Tv tuner first, will use the in-built speakers for watching Tv. And then later on buy PS3+speakers. Just not able finalize anything as I seriously wanna do some gaming, but then not on a sad *ss CRT Tv.
