PS3 FAQ

The PS3 can play DivX movies without conversion as long as they are of the *.avi extension.

But I have noticed that the PS3 does not support some *.mp4 files and *.avi files encoded with some particular mix of settings. They show up as Corrupted Data in the video file list but the same files play perfectly on the X360.

Same problem i am facing. Loads of .avi shows up as corrupted on my PS3. Wats the remedy? Please help.

AVI (audio video interleave) is just a container. whether or not your ps3 can playback a video file depends upon the codec that was used to encode the video. if you dont mind conversion, use media coder its a great open source free media encoder.

Sony has a PS3 controller charger, let us show you it

Even with today's wireless video game controllers, you can't stay untethered forever. After a few hours of gaming on the PlayStation 3, you'll have to plug in that SIXAXIS or DualShock 3 USB cable to charge. Starting December 18th, Sony Japan will offer an AC adapter intended for PS3 controllers at a price of ¥2,800 (just under $30). Like third party solutions we've seen, it has two USB ports so you'll be able to do two controllers or toss in a Bluetooth headset. Nothing yet on availability outside of Japan, but if we get word we'll be all over it, 'cause we feel slightly guilty for leaving the PS3 on overnight to charge -- what with the world's dwindling energy supply and all.

The PlayStation 3 Turns Two

Two years ago tomorrow the PlayStation 3 had its North America launch. Remember November 2006? Ah, yes, the days of $3,000 machines being sold on eBay and beyond-the-pale mayhem in the midnight line-ups to get one. Sony Computer Entertainment America had a far more sedate affair on Wednesday, toasting the two year anniversary (don't call it a "birthday") of the console.

There were no big announcements or proclamations at the event, but it did showcase Killzone 2 and Resistance: Retribution, kind of apt considering Resistance: Fall of Man was a console launch title. They also had a video depicting the evolution of the console's firmware, which is always sort of trippy to remember what you didn't have two years ago and what you take for granted now. And on that score, of course, PlayStation Home's open beta will hit sometime before the end of the year.

Worldwide sales of the console stand at 16.8 million units at the year two mark. So, cheers and here's to year three.

Considering the wide range of options that you can use to charge the controllers (basically any powered USB port, like a USB 2.0 port on your PC, or a motorola / blackberry charger etc.) this product seems a little redundant, and an unnecessary expense at $30.

Hi,

I recently bought a 40GB PS3. I have a few questions.

1. I am planning to buy an HDMI to DVI cable so that I can connect it to my monitor, but the monior doesn't have speakers. How do I get the audio?

2. Are PS2 games compatible with this version of PS3? I looked around but couldn't get a concrete answer about this version.

3. I am not able to connect to Home. I get an error saying "this content is not available on your account". There is only one user account on the system and I have disabled all parental control on it. Any ideas?

Thanks

Nishith
