Don Karnage
^^ looking at what u have posted,i guess your new cpu(E8400) and your current mb have compatibility issues. Yeah but according to Asus and this it has support since BIOS 2001 (which I have). Also I did not find anyone else reporting incompatibility issues. While playing HD content onto an external source; a laptop gets stressed to the max; I would suggest you try playing the movie only on the TV and not on clone mode where the video is being played on both the laptop screen and the TV. Don Karnage
Ok now I feel as if I'm in the twilight zone. The assembler had gotten XP to install on a new HDD after playing around with the memory timings but on boot it still sometimes gave a BSOD. Now when I got the PC back home I flashed it again from the USB drive with the same BIOS, loaded defaults and booted. Windows was still freezing till now. Then I rebooted and just changed the memory frequency to DDR2-667 (I have Kingston DDR2 value ram) and then XP started booting fine but it won't detect my Pinnacle TV tuner. Thinking that auto detection was the problem I booted to Ubuntu but it still gives kernel panic and Win7 still gives BSOD. I even tried reinstalling these but both Ubuntu and Win7 won't install. Update: I tried to change more settings to manual (FSB to 333MHz) and now WinXP has started freezing after booting for a while then starts working but Avast remains disabled. Don Karnage
Ok, I'm at my wits end here. I'm thinking of upgrading the my motherboard and RAM as well. I'm thinking of P35/P43 based motherboards with 2x2GB DIMMS, could anyone give recommendations with pricing information.
satanicsaint
@ Jeri When I boot up , the beep takes unusually long , it tries to find the HDD, and fails. I enter BIOS to see that the disk is not listed there. The disk didnt fail while I was working on it, it just didnt get started on saturday morning. So I`m assuming its not a mechanical failure and partitions should be ok along with the boot sector. Could be an electrical failure? The disk itself is just 2 months old .Thanks for the offering me the recovery , I might just do that. I just want to try everything at my end before I can send it over. I do have a spare disk , so I will download acronis tonight and give it a try. UPDATE I checked the hardisk on another PC and it failed to recognize. Now I`m more inclined to believe that the problem is electrical or PCB rather than a mechanical failure. Called up a Guy(data recover er) in Indranagar who asked me to take the disk there. He also said he would be doing the preliminary investigation in front of me( what a relief). Alternatively my friend suggested me to pick up another hard disk of same make same capacity and rip both the HDD's apart and replace the board and try.( This still works out better than paying 1000 per GB of recovery) Ofcourse, there is always the Jeri option I am going to the data recoverer now, will take a call depending on the outcome. m-JeRi
Actually do like this... 1. Do the surface scan and try to recover...thats the data recover er is gonna do it... which if i got it,would have done too 2. If step 1 is not working then probably ur hdd is bust... only ways a. 0 level data recover/or the recovery which takes hours..too costly...1000 bucks a gb or so.... for this a pro is needed...coz it takes lots of tech/patience b. Buy the EXACT same HDD for seconds and replace the pcb by a pro...coz if u screw up... or u can do it..if u have done it once...
m-JeRi
With new CPU (E8400) + current motherboard - It freezes. With old CPU (E6420) + current motherboard - It works OK. With new CPU (E8400) + new test motherboard - It works OK. You have compatibility issues....

He seemed sensible enough for me to leave the HDD with him. He said he would charge me between 2500 to 5000 to recover everything depending on the method used. He also said the HDD would be under warranty after this exercise, so seems like he would be doing a surface scan like you said. Keeping my fingers crossed, I`m supposed to meet him tomorrow. satanicsaint
all the best It turned bad. The surface scan stopped after D drive ( i had c, d and e) . He(recover er) says he has tried changing the board and the results are still negative, so he now says the only way is to rip it apart (and loose warranty ) and do it the hard way. He is not committing a price as he would know only after its taken apart. So now, I will have to factor the cost of a new drive along with unknown recovery charges. So Should I should I get it back and send it to you instead? will that help?
m-JeRi
hmmm.... well these are the options...i think 1. Let him do his thing and foot the bill... but ask for a estimate first...otherwise the cost may be too much..if he says no take to someone that will say 2. well he scanned upto D right...atleast 10%... could he recover that much data??? or did he say he cant?? 3. you can send to me and ill try to recover as much as it allows me to..if i dont succeed u shldnt blame me .... i cannot do the uber tech stuff like ripping it apart... coz ull loose ur hdd warranty which is not desired..alteast u get a new hdd r8? 4. you can sent to me..if i fail you can send the hdd for RMA and atelast get a new hdd... satanicsaint
^^ He did scan the whole of D and that makes it 30% of capacity but he said he cant retrieve it. I will ask him again and also take a quote. lets see.
