tesla
h3lios the q6600 runs at 2.4ghz although having four cores makes it effecient for 3dwork. For gaming the dual core E8400 is a superb choice. It runs at 3GHz and can be overclocked safely to higher speeds. The E8400 has a tdp of 65watts while the q6600 has a tdp of 105 watts. Thus the overclocking potential of the Q6600 is reduced as it needs more cooling and power when overclocked. The G0 stepping of q6600 has a tdp of 95 watts though. In short for gaming dual cores rule for 3d work and number crunching quadcores all the way.
tesla
What about future proofing? And suppose i manage to squeeze a Q9450 in my budget? I would not recommend investing in a quad core now. As it stands intel is moving towards a new socket for its nehalem range of processors in q4. These are atleast 20% faster clock per clock and include an inbuilt memory controller as well. That period will mark the beginning of ddr3 becoming a standard. The 19450 will be eol'd (discontinued) in q1 2009. I admit its difficult to keep thinking too far ahead but for now the E8400 is more than enough. Instead if you put extra money on the GPU like the AMD 4850 which is expected to retail @ Rs 13000 you will end up building a lightning bolt for gaming. ЯeVeЯse
^Yup. The upcoming Intel Quad-Cores are better, check out Nehalem benchmarks, they offer a very good speed advantage. Plus as already stated, atm a nice fast Core2Duo is a better option over a Core2Quad. You can go in for Nehalem a few years down the line when DDR3 is a standard, and the Quads drop to prices less than 180$. The new socket is called LGA 1336 or LGA 1366 or something like that. I don't remember exactly.
Don Karnage
I just started Mass Effect yesterday (I had to get the original DVD replaced as it wasn't installing). Is anyone here using Forceware control panel to add AA because the game looks ugly with all those jaggies. I did not have time to experiment so if anyone has an effective combination of AA level (Multisampling or Supersampling) with grain effect please post here. tesla
The E8400 is what I would recommend out of the two, prices being same and not overclocking. The E8400 will be faster in games purely because of its higher clock speed.
Don Karnage
Hmm...but the pricing atm is almost the same (8400 and Q6600)...assuming i don't o/c, which one should i get? And yeah the HD 4850 is out for 13K, just confirmed with my vendor. Go for the E8400 now, the only game engine I remember scaling beyond 2 cores is UT3. Other games will benefit more from the higher clock speed of E8400.

Seems like you might need to enable Microphone Boost to get better responsiveness from your Microphone. I am on Vista, so it will be hard for me to explain but here is a better tutorial for XP. You've posted a solution to increase overall microphone volume, whereas his issue is that the volume "automatically" decreases whenever he is using gtalk. I remember i had a similar problem, and this was fixed by muting either Line in or one of the other options under the "Recording" panel in sound properties. Also, check for some settings in Gtalk for anything referring to AGC or automatic gain control. Hope this helps.

m-JeRi
^^^^ me too ...crappy intel mobo
Panthelon
Try posting the system only with mobo, one RAM module, and prc, and see what happens..remove all external peripherals as well. If you get a keyboard failure error, then connect only the keyboard and see if you can go to the bios. A long continuous beep, can also be a stuck key on the keyboard. If it's a blinking cursor after the manufacturer's logo; then it most probably can be the HDD as well.
