Guys,

am planning to gift my dad a good fast PC (and to use as a surrogate gaming PC when i come home). Budget - <40 k.

now his current PC has this config -

Ram - 2MB DDR2

CPU - Core 2 Duo @ 2.8 ghz

no graphics card

am thinking of adding -

Ram - adding 4mb

HDD - 500gb

CPU - do i change it?

graphics card - suggest.

cooling unit?

edit - if you can accomodate a good 22 inch monitor in it too, would be great

what do you guys suggest?

Hi guys im using windows 7(64bit).I have developed a small java application as part of my project. The problem is that ms access 2007 im using as a database creator is 32 bit.So even though i launch the 32bit odbc manager and add the dsn ,but when i launch the application it gives me an error:[Microsoft][Odbc driver manager]The specified dsn contains an architecture mismatch between the driver and the application.

Now what should i do?It works fine on 32 bit windows.

Please help me ASAP :nerves::samui:

buddy 40k is a lot for this makeover. Just slap a GTX460 with 1GB (not the 896MB - it has lower bandwidth) or an ATI equivalent (5850 i think),

by the way the RAM is 2GB not MB. bumping it to 4GB is worth it. I think the core 2 duo is pretty decent for another couple of years atleast - no games out that are cpu bottle necked yet (maybe one or two).

GTX 460 is around 15k and 2GB ram should cost Rs 3k. That should leave you with enough space to get a 22" LCD. Oh yeah you will have to get a bigger smps if you dont have one already

It would be better if u buy a good quad-core processor. Some games these days use dual core processors.U would get a decent one around 5k.ATI or Intel, its ur choice?

if you(@DevilsOwn) are going to get a quad then get a core 2 quad so you dont have to upgrade the mobo and ram.

I am with alphabeta. No point in upgrading the processor ATM. Buy a GPU, a better PSU and 2 more gigs or RAM. That will get you a pretty good gaming rig. Rest you can spend on a monitor.

thanks. saw this after i had placed order for the following upgrades -

4 GB DDR3 ram,

Corsair 550W PSU

ATI 4570

and the i5 @ 2.66 gigs. (i think it has 4 cores)

may get a Dell 22" LCD. NOt finalised that yet

my father has asked me to propose an it overhaul plan for the house.. total expected budget 1lac +- 20,000

my current plan is to:

1.buy or get assembled a good workhorse which will run well for bout 4-5 yrs

2. buy a thinkpad x100e or tell me bout ne good 12 incher netbook as he already has a slow tz series vaio which is 11 incher n looks small to me.

we already have a sz 440 which is my current lappie, an fz series vaio windoze corrupt another sz220 which i plan to slaughter as its body has been damaged. and a tz series vaio

now here's my plan.

convert the sz440 into a file server, share our laserjet , share its dvd drive.

install windows 7 on the fz vaio n use it as a permanent skype station.

the sz 220 has 1.5 gigs ram so if i put 512 mb from it into the 440 and 1 gig from it into the fz their ram will increase to 1.5 n 2 gigs respectively

the sz440 has a 80 gig hdd cn i convert it into an external hdd den i will use d 200 gig hdd from the 220 as the primary hdd of the 440

is it possible to take out a laptop cd drive

then i will convert d dvd drive from the fz into n external dvd drive for the thinkpad

also i was thinking if i can take out the geforce 7400 from both the sz vaios as they also have an intel gma

there will be free space in the file server keeping it cooler

man, i hope you are buying a new motherboard as well. If not dont bother buying a lcd, first buy the motherboard so that you can use the i5.

Core i5 processor wont fit in core 2 duo motherboard. You could have gone with a bigger GPU instead of a new CPU. :((
