Zzombie
@ i_rock098 I have faced that error several times and unfortunately its not easy to troubleshoot them as the problem could be with several components like MB, GFX card, RAM etc. Few tips I could suggest. - First, check if you components are not overheating. Mainly CPU, GFX card, and internal cabinet temperature. http://openhardwaremonitor.org/ is a good place to get a free multi-monitor tool. - Download latest version of display and motherboard drivers. Also download alternate drivers from an old date. - Remove display and motherboard driver. Use something like Driver Sweeper(google for it) to remove them completely. - Try latest drivers if they doesn't work uninstall them and use older drivers. - As a last resort try re-installing the operating system and test drivers once again. - If it still crashes, chances are there is a problem with a PC component. - Graphics card could be the main culprit here but a faulty ram or blown capacitor on motherboard could also produce such errors. - If you have multiple stick of RAM, try testing each stick and see if it fixes anything. Also if his motherboard has inbuilt graphics card, use it to test if his PC is stable in software emulation games. (as inbuilt cards doesn't support Hardware T&L). Solitaire
One of my Dad's old PCs conked off. Basically some part of his motherboard fried and he has a P4. So he wants to go for a newer machine for his basic needs at home, he has 2 other laptops and another desktop for other stuff, but yeah. Needs: No gaming Maybe some HD video Mostly browsing the web A fair bit of multitasking Usual word processing and spreadsheets and stuff Backing up data from mobile devices That's all he really does. So I was thinking of getting a lower end system with integrated graphics because he does no gaming, but with around 4gb of DDR3 and a decent motherboard and a 1TB HDD. And the Core i3s and Athlon X4s are what I'm having trouble deciding between. Both cost around the same. The comparison here is between the Athlon II X4 635 (or 640 if it's available) and the Core i3 530. Both in the Rs. 5000-5400 range. Thoughts? Opinions? Solitaire
I am running Win 7 ultimate. I have a 250 gig empty partition I want to use for Ubuntu. What's the best way to install it - Wubi? No no, install it as a dual boot using Ubuntu itself. Linux's own bootloader worked for me with Windows 7. In the rare occasion that something silly happened, I would just pop in the Win 7 DVD and repair or whatever it's called... then use EasyBCD to put in an entry for Ubuntu. That's how I did it, but don't quite remember what exact steps I followed.

Bulovski
^^ thanks. The first link is really helpful. Am doing it right now. Installing Ubuntu to a partition while browsing. I guess MS cannot trust its customers with the concept of multitasking.
Bird Bird Bird
No sweat. Welcome to ghei-hood And yeah, the whole concept of doing something worthwhile, specially when an OS is getting installed is totally radical ! Bulovski
In defense of MS, I do think the Partition Manager in Windows is better than gparted
Bird Bird Bird
Oh yes, the partition manager from the Vista kernel onwards is really good. Though it does limit you to a max of 3 extended partitions I think. So in all one can only make 4 partitions via it AFAIR. Have to use 3rd party managers for further usage. Solitaire
I spent 6 freaking hours going nuts with a new PC on which Win 7 was there but with which an old Lexmark 3100 All-in-one (which was working just fine on XP on the earlier machine) wouldn't work because the f**king company hadn't made any drivers past XP First tried getting it to work on Win 7 somehow. It wouldn't. Then set up a virtual machine in VirtualBox, installed XP on it. Tried for more than 2 hours to get the printer recognized and working on the VM but it wouldn't. At one stage the scanner section alone worked, then at another time the integrated memory card alone worked. Then it all wouldn't work. Tried USB filters in VirtualBox settings, tried it without them, tried a thousand other things but it wouldn't work. Realized that installing XP was the only option and then I remembered that XP wouldn't detect SATA hard drives during installation . So I used nLite, sourced the drivers for Intel's SATA controllers from somewhere, used my original XP CD and burnt a bootable XP CD with the drivers for SATA integrated. Thought "Finally I can install XP itself, dual boot and be done with it, phew". Then it stopped at "Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware configuration". Retried .... again.. and again.... and again... and again.. Tried disabling and enabling a thousand options in the BIOS and retried. It still hung right there. Now the options I can try are to format the whole thing, remove all the partitions and Windows 7 with them and pray and hope that the Windows XP installer goes through. Otherwise, I can remove parts that are plugged into the PC one by one, toss out some RAM, disconnect sh*t here and there and hope that works, but I don't want to mess with the innards of a new PC (my Dad's, not mine) cos God forbid if something goes wrong he'll skin me alive. Totally wasted evening
Bird Bird Bird
Strange ! It says compatible with Windows Vista, which automatically confers compatibility with Win 7 !! Though the download link shows 'Page not found' error ! Edit: Why don't you give the series 3300 driver a whirl ? That's compatible with Win 7. Manufacturer's website lists compatibility upto only Win XP. Damn Lexmark. No, the 3300 drivers didn't work.
