Django_3101
No offense but I doubt it , I have NEVER heard o BIOS chip getting corrup I can't imagine how is it EVEN possible ? How do you replace the BIOS chip on the motherboard ? ( I really don't know ) If it was really corrupt it woul have never booted AT ALL , why was it booting sometimes ? If the runtime code was corrupt , it was corrupt , it won't boot at all Sorry but I may be wrong here None taken.. Since last night it was not starting at all. I myself don't know the technicalities.. May be he meant that firmware got corrupted. All the basic things that piper listed, the engineer checked. Finally he said its mobo's problem. The engineer accompanied me to ASUS service center... There he first checked and faced the issue. He replaced the BIOS chip(or watever you call it). Since then it is working fine. Pushy
maybe he's calling the CMOS Battery the BIOS chip, it happens when ur CMOS battery runs out too, so there blueelivs, just google the BSOD error, u might get some solution Edited September 16, 2011 by Pushy
Django_3101
No Pushy, CMOS battery is different.. He said firmware update kiya hai and all that stuff. CMOS battery mein koi firmware hota hai kya?
piper
It has to be the BIOS chip, because I have a laptop that powers up (I mean the LEDs and all light up), but nothing on the screen. The service guy says its a bios issue, the bios chip (one that contains the actual BIOS firmware) is corrupted. @Django I guess yours was under warranty, so free replacement. Mine is an old laptop and they're quoting 4k, so I'm using my laptop as a door stopper for now.

alphabeta
Guys, I need to buy a desktop. Primary use will be gaming but I really don't need a full on enthusiastic system. 1080p for all the current games should do fine. I cannot decide between whether to go with Sandy Bridge or go AMD Phenom II for the moment and put a bulldozer when it comes out. The decision to go for AMD is because I feel it might more easily upgradable and lighter on the wallet for me at the moment. But from the looks of things, it seems Ivy Bridge will have the same socket as SandyBridge (ofcourse Intel has screwed people over in this) - so I am confused. What do you guys think of this ? AMD not a bad choice ?
Sackboy
Get a 990FX mobo with a cheap Phenom X4 Bulldozers will come earlier , will be cheaper While The Z68 motherboards at "Compatible" but not optimized While the AM3 mobos work with bulldozer the AM3+(990FX) ARE for bulldozers Also Phenom will be MUCH cheaper than sandybridge at the moment And the mobos after ivy bridge will abandon Z68 , AMD is very likely to keep AM3+ looking at their track record REMEMBER this advice is based on the fact that you plan on upgrading again later in the near future

I will get a high end GPU - well not really high end - I am thinking something like a GTX570 or its equivalent. The question - I should have made it a bit more clear - is whether the Phenom II X4 will be a bottleneck for the games and the gpu. Sackboy
Not really as of now , but in the future it might be , and the bulldozers are close , it's just this november

Its expensive, but it has very good results, from what i gather from the internet.

rahul
While a GTX 570 gives an average of 5-10 frames more than a 560 Ti, you might want to consider getting a 560 Ti now, save up a bit and SLi it later. Dual 560 Ti's are proven to be better than a single 580. Moreover, with a decent after market cooler, you should be able to get to stock 570 speeds on a 560 Ti. 6-8 months down the road, getting another 560 Ti should be a lot cheaper and the build will last another year easily. Yeah that was the plan - get a cheap GPU for now and go for the 28nm GPU that come out half a year later. The only question is whether to go Phenom X4 + AM3+ motherboard + 560Ti / 6850 GPU -> get bulldozer + next version GPU a year later or Sandy bridge i5 2500 + motherboard + 560Ti / 6850 GPU - get ivy bridge + next version GPU a year later. I want to know if the phenom will perform well for the next year or so - to make it simple, will it run starcraft 2 and diablo 3 well ? Pushy
get 2600K + 6850, later keep the cpu and upgrade to a better gpu, that way u save monies on cpu upgrade which can be used to buy, the then top of the line GPU.
rahul
I'm not sure about the specifics of AMD platform, but this rule applies generally to everything PC - If you keep waiting, you'll be waiting forever. I'm hoping to assemble a new rig by October end and every now and then, even I get the thought of waiting for Ivy Bridge + next gen GPU's.. Isn't 2600k overkill for a gamer? I would advise 2500k + 560 Ti. Or at least a 6870.
