kemosabe
ALPHA17 : finally I am upgrading my processor , motherboard and ram. I have windows xp and windows 8 in duel boot. If I remove the chipset, lan and sound driver in both the OS, will it work in the new hardware. I really don't want to do the painful reinstallation. Depends on the drivers themselves, can you give me a list of the components you plan to buy. If they are Sandy / Ivy-Bridge or AMD FX type processors should not be a problem. Maybe the occasional Windows XP driver might be hard to track down but Windows8 should work out of the box.

Usual suspects - i5 3470, gigabyte B75 motherboard and Kingston hyperx blue 8gb kit. My current pc is - dual core E5200, gigbyte g31 mobo and transcend 4gb kit. Kazekage Gaara
Hi guys, Am not sure whether this is the proper place to ask this but here goes My friend is interested in getting a laptop for home use. He will mostly be using it for watching hi-def movies, some regular games, listening to music, burning DVDs, and doing some pretty simple excel and MS word stuff. He can even increase his budget to a little extra at MAX 32 to 33k Please suggest us some really good brands and good warranty and after-sales service Thanx a lot in advance Edit: It has to be somewhere in the lines of 15 inches. Any smaller and it would be difficult to watch movies and any higher (17") and it would be too bulky to carry around Edited April 9, 2013 by Kazekage Gaara
AK77
Upgrade you RAM. For processor, wait for Intel's Haswell lineup releasing in June, as Intel has started shipping units to PC manufacturers already. Also buy a mobo having LGA 1150 socket then. You can go for this system now or as AK77 has pointed out wait for Haswell, although as expected there will be a corresponding increase in the price of individual components. Not to mention that the DDR 3 RAM might be superseded by DDR 4 types there by increasing the cost further.

DDR 4 is the only silver lining for Haswell, also note that after 1 year of Haswell Intel will bring Broadwell. The initial haswell chip will work with ddr3 later on intel may bring ddr4.But considering Broadwell in the horizon , intel may skip ddr4 for haswell. I will go with the ivy bridge, considering no real competition from AMD, I am not expecting any major gaming performance increase in Haswell. Also I am dead tired of the waiting game

He can look at these AMD APU based laptops, AMD APU laptops @flipkart. After sales varies from city to city but in a place like Bombay I doubt you should have any problems in getting issues rectified. Hope this helps, Cheerio! Also I am dead tired of the waiting game I know that, turn-around time for hardware is closing at a sickening rate. The main thrust for Haswell seems to be the iGP which Intel claims will perform better than AMD's APU solution. Apart from that in caveat laden terms as always none of the company has shown actual figures, supplanting those with percentage graphs which make a hash of the mess. I can only say that Haswell will be a definite improvement in power consumption and IPC with the advent of new architectures. Agreed on the wait game, can be infuriatingly annoying. I am doing that for a new graphic card to replace my HD5770. Edited April 9, 2013 by ALPHA17

Hi Alpha, May I ask, why AMD APU and not Intel i3 Third Gen ? The cost of these AMD APU A8 or A10 is almost the same as i3 Third Gen lappies. Edit: I see you've filtered the link to show only Samsung and HP. Why not Dell or Asus ? Just a query I heard Dell had good build quality and the best after-sales service for laptops Edit II: I fell in love with this one though HP Pavilion G6-2314AX Laptop (APU Quad Core A8/ 6GB/ 1TB/ DOS/ 1.5GB Graph) (Sparkling Black) Awesome config man By the way, I got confused with this.... Graphic Processor - 1 GB AMD Radeon HD 7670M Dedicated 512 MB AMD Radeon HD 7640G Graphics Integrated. Why is it showing 1 GB and 512 MB and two cards? 7670M and 7640G ? Weird Edited April 9, 2013 by Kazekage Gaara

Now how to clean the processor and heatsink from the thermal paste. Is there any Indian jugar. You can get rubbing alcohol from your local chemists if they stock it. Else, in a tight spot I have used Rum, Vodka and after-shave to effect. May I ask, why AMD APU and not Intel i3 Third Gen ? The cost of these AMD APU A8 or A10 is almost the same as i3 Third Gen lappies. Better screen size for the same price. Intel chipset based laptops are very finicky about the size of the screen. Also the GPU sub-system on AMD laptops is far superior to the Intel offerings. Your friend will be able to game at decent settings with these laptops for sometime (if he desires). Edit: I see you've filtered the link to show only Samsung and HP. Why not Dell or Asus ? Just a query I heard Dell had good build quality and the best after-sales service for laptops Because DELL and ASUS do not have AMD APU based offerings in the Indian market as far as I know. Graphic Processor - 1 GB AMD Radeon HD 7670M Dedicated 512 MB AMD Radeon HD 7640G Graphics Integrated. Why is it showing 1 GB and 512 MB and two cards? 7670M and 7640G ? AMD APU is actually a CPU + Integrated Graphics Processor chip on the same die (basically the processor carries a GPU). This borrows RAM from the standard pool to convert into V-RAM the other chip you are seeing on the configuration is a dedicated GPU which has its own complement of V-RAM (so no sharing system memory). These can work in tandem in games under the Hybrid CrossFire profiles. And when battery life or light tasks are more important only iGP is utilized. Hope this clarifies the confusion. ALPHA17
All fine buddy. Share some pictures when you get the RIG. if all your games are playing well cool enjoy the card as much as you can. On a 20" screen the card is just about holding up with current generation of games. Playing BioShock INFINITE at a stable 30 fps everything set to high. I will go for an AMD HD8*** series or nVidia Maxwell once enough details are leaked. Edited April 9, 2013 by ALPHA17
Kazekage Gaara
Thanx a lot for the info Alpha. I actually am now more interested in this AMD APU, but to tell you the truth, my friend who is the one actually going to buy a laptop, wasn't quite excited when I told him about all this when he heard I was talking about "AMD". He isn't tech savy and he literally told me, "Aren't AMD processors cheaper :P" He also has the mentality that Intel is "more powerful and much faster" than AMD and that AMD based laptops don't have good resale value. Really don't know how to explain all this tech stuff to him You know, even after telling him that a quad-core AMD APU is very powerful, he would still be skeptical in investing 30k in an AMD laptop Edited April 9, 2013 by Kazekage Gaara

If he plans to sell it like three to four months later the retail value is a legit concern, else I think one should use a PC / laptop / phone till it dies or cannot carry the tasks effectively. If it were a desktop he was planning, I would share his concern but looking at his usage and the screen size he demands Intel will be a tight fit. Really don't know how to explain all this tech stuff to him Games, just mention games.

Na, he intends to use it till it dies, basically 3 to 4 years I've actually sent the link to this thread/convo so that he can read it himself and make an informed decision Edit: As far as I know, he isn't interested in a lot of games. Also, I have a question. The screen size you're mentioning, we are looking for 15 inch laptops right? and i3 Third Gen laptops are easily available in 15" sizes, so really don't know what you're getting at about screen size Edited April 9, 2013 by Kazekage Gaara
