Solitaire
I have un-installed the Norton suite already, I doubt there ever was a paid anti-virus suite on my PC (running Windows7, Home Premium 64-bit). Windows Defender is incomplete vis-á-vis Security Essentials. At-least that is what I know. This is not my laptop, it is my sisters, I enjoy the faster boot up and transfer rates (USB 3.0). But overall, I shall pass, the issue is less of a familiarity and more of how I perceive a desktop and its set-up. The charms bar or whatever you call the opening screen is not meant to be used with a touchpad / mouse, it is touch oriented. Live tiles are okay, no issue with them. Google Search / Chrome application takes more time to come up compared to BING or IE. Why? I am happy with Windows7 and unless something more pressing than Dx 11.1 is debuted by MicroSoft I don't see my need to advance from 7. I don't know, I really don't have that issue. On mine, IE takes more time to come up .. I use Chrome more than IE on my personal machine I've never used anything other than AVG initially on XP a bit and then MSE right until W8. As far as Defender goes, Defender in W8 is essentially the functionality of MSE+Defender. It's not the same Windows Defender that you download from the net. Explained here - http://kb.iu.edu/data/auet.html#about8 About Windows Defender for Windows 8Windows Defender for Windows 8 is a full antivirus program (unlike previous versions) that provides real-time protection and postinfection scanning and removal. Defender provides protection against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software and comes installed with all versions of Windows 8. Back to top About Windows Defender for Windows 7, Vista, and XPWindows Defender is an antispyware program for Windows that provides real-time protection and postinfection scanning and removal. Windows Defender succeeds Windows Antispyware, and is one of several competing packages from various vendors that protect against spyware and adware (generally lumped together and called "malware"). Yeah, there's no single huge reason to really upgrade to Win 8 from Win 7. I agree with that. Overall stability and if you love the way the new OS works, you can move. In my case I moved for the heck of it thinking it was bullcrap initially but I honestly fell in love with the way it worked and haven't looked back. I'll be imaging my new build (whenever I put it together) with Windows 8 for sure, not Windows 7 - and price has no role to play in that decision, it's only because of which one I like better. ALPHA17
I don't know, I really don't have that issue. On mine, IE takes more time to come up .. I use Chrome more than IE on my personal machine Don't know, IE 10 looks a lot cleaner and functions like a cinch but the inverted UI wasn't cutting it for me. Anyway my sister is well versed with Chrome. So that is that, installed Chrome and Google Search both take a longer initiate time than BING or IE. As far as Defender goes, Defender in W8 is essentially the functionality of MSE+Defender. It's not the same Windows Defender that you download from the net. Solitaire
Can you explain me this then --> First Ever MicroSoft Security Essentials for Windows8. I doubt that's official. Looks like someone's personal project to get MSE working on W8. And that comparison isn't accurate. The very same Wikipedia link he's mentioning actually says: Microsoft Security Essentials does not run on Windows 8, which has its own security subsystem. On 13 September 2011, at BUILD conference in Anaheim, California, Microsoft unveiled the developer preview of Windows 8, which had a security component capable of preventing an infected USB flash memory from compromising the system during the boot process.[33][34] On 15 September, Windows 8 developer's blog confirmed that Windows Defender in Windows 8 would take over the role of virus protection. In an included video, Jason Garms of Microsoft showed how Windows Defender is registered with Action Centeras an AV and spyware protection tool, and how it blocks drive-by malware.[35] On 3 March 2012, Softpedia reviewed the consumer preview of Windows 8 and noted the similarity in appearance of Windows Defender and Microsoft Security Essentials 4.0 Beta. According to Softpedia, Windows 8 Setup requires Microsoft Security Essentials to be uninstalled before upgrading Windows 7.[36]

ALPHA17
hey alpha do i need to take the display out from my graphic card in order to use it in anything? Yes, the cable needs to go to the OUTPUT from graphic card. I doubt that's official. Looks like someone's personal project to get MSE working on W8. And that comparison isn't accurate. Solitaire
Yes, the cable needs to go to the OUTPUT from graphic card. It is not official and every-time I search for MicroSoft Security Essentials for Windows8 that is what I get. Hmm, never shows up on the front page of my Google results atleast. Most links are pointing to windows defender. Anyway, point is Windows defender should be enough and it's not the same as WD from Win 7. Ph3N0M
Upgrading my ancient home computer part by part(basically I'm putting something new everytime I go back home. For example, had added NZXT Gamma and a Seasonic 430W PSU the last time). For this time, need to buy a 500GB hard drive, a new motherboard, and a processor(something like an i3 third gen should do. That PC is not used for much except net browsing). Can anything be done in 10k? Edited August 1, 2013 by Ph3N0M

mshingore
I've been facing a problem lately. I have a HP laptop on windows 8 and a Belkin router. My connection was generally working fine till now. But now I have a problem where the wifi status of my laptop shows 'limited' when connected to the belkin network. Signal strength is excellent but I still can't surf the Internet. If I use my phone on the wifi, it works smoothly. But the limited yellow exclamation point just won't go when I use the laptop. Tried reboot, resetting the router as well as resetting my laptop's ip (it had worked once before) using netsh int ip reset In command prompt Admin mode It gives me following result Resetting Inteface, OK! Resetting Neighbour, OK! Resetting Path, OK! Resetting, failed. Access is denied. Resetting, OK! Restart computer to complete this action But reboot doesn't solve it. FYI, earlier all resetting prompts returned OK. No failed message. What could be the problem n solution? Also AVG firewall shows network name as Unidentified network Despite being connected. please help Edited August 1, 2013 by mshingore

mshingore
Do ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew work on your admin command line? I executed those just now and it says This
mshingore
Well in all probability this has something to so with my wifi adapter. Thankfully I have a USB wifi adapter so that helps a lot! But still solution will be appreciated
Solitaire
So your wireless adapter successfully released and renewed IP and it looks connected to the router... But it still doesn't get connected to the internet? What does your router's admin page show? Does it show it connected? I once had an issue like this and I went ahead and assigned a static IP to the machine and it kinda solved it. Then again, might be your adapter itself. Hopefully, someone else can comment as well. Thanks Alpha. That prccy and mobo add up to 11.5k. Have the prices of these things increased recently? BTW, do you have any suggestions regarding the AMD side of things. Thought it would be better to go that route with their good integrated graphics solutions in the smaller budget.
