ALPHA17
Use this application, MemTest86+. Do at-least three passes at the minimum.

Aftrunner
Defragging does jack all to a bad HDD. If you are getting disk read errors 99.99% of the times its the HDD. Did you run a chkdsk when you said you checked HDD for errors? With /R/F parameters? Try booting into Safe mode with Networking. If you can get in there, run SFC /SCANNOW from command prompt, that might fix your windows errors if there are any. Download HD tune and run a check with that if you can. Else back and reinstall OS. If you have Win 8 you could refresh or reset your PC. If the PC doesnt even go to SMWN then you might be kinda screwed.
hussain
My hdd is under warranty ... Should something like this be covered under it?... I get read errors more than half the time .. and I've reinstalled the os thrice now.
Aftrunner
Yeah should be covered. Its a pretty standard HDD failure method. Can anyone recommend a decent, cheapish PC headset with mic? Preferably below 5k? Edited October 26, 2014 by Aftrunner

ALPHA17
^ Okay, first things first. Do you hear any auditory signal when you press the power button, any activity on the display or absolutely nothing? If you are at-least getting to a POST then it might be a hard-drive issue, else it might be a RAM or motherboard problem.
hussain
No no ... The computer turns on and I can get into the bios settings and such ... But it won't boot up ... It says disk read error and Windows is corrupted and stuff.
ALPHA17
Okay, download MemTest86+ and put it onto a pen-drive / CD, run three-seven passes and see what comes up. Also, better find out what brand SMPS you are using along with what type of hard-drive you have working as your primary, is it a Green / Low Power Edition drive by any chance? After all this, try to run a Live OS session from your optical drive and see if that functions without hiccups. If that and MemTest86+ come clean, format Windows, save whatever data you want (that is not on the OS partition) and give the current drive for replacement. Can anyone recommend a decent, cheapish PC headset with mic? Preferably below 5k? Steelseries Siberia v1 LOGITECH G230 / G430 These are my recommendations. piper
Can anyone recommend a decent, cheapish PC headset with mic? Preferably below 5k? How is 5k cheapish... :| As for your query, do you intend to use it for voip/in-game chat much? Would it be used for music/movies as well? Which (acceptable) headset are you using currently? ALPHA17
^ Yeah, I think that there is your problem along with the SMPS. Better get a 1TB Western Digital Blue hard-drive as your daily driver.
hussain
Why what's the issue withwith the green one???... It'll probably get replaced anyway... I'll buy an ssd... Just got os.
ALPHA17
^ The Green drives are not meant to run for extended durations of time. They are good as data dumps and secondary hard-drives but as a primary with the OS, they do not last long. Have seen it happen multiple times. Get a 120GB / 180GB SSD if you plan to get one at all or as I said, just get a standard TB 7200RPM piece for now and get an SSD later.
