Hi guys,

I wanna know. How many of you guys know there is something called Emulation ? and that you know you can play Arcade, NES, SNES, and a whole lot of games on PCs that were not meant for PCs ? Ever heard of NeoRAGEx or Winkawaks ?

Just wanna know how many people here at GI actually know about this and enjoy all the retro titles that I do every single day of my life :P

KG do u play on Kaillera through kawaks?? I always dreamt of playing Kof online through kawaks but kaillera always fails for me..i mean even if i get connected to a server...the lag is unbearable!!!

I started playing Kof way back in 98..neorage was the first emulator which was able to run the kof roms without any sound!!

Well, I used to quite a lot :D but I shifted from place to place and didn't quite have a stable internet, so wasn't able to, but recently when I tried to, it wouldn't list any servers, and I came to know that Kaillera servers were taken offline fairly recently. :( As of now, am trying to make kawaks work on LAN thru Kaillera, and I found an awesome guide on how to do it, so me and my buddies can have some SERIOUS fun with SFA3 and SS4 :D

Also, the reason Kaillera failled for you earlier was coz you must've been trying to play with guys on servers that were quite far away from you (aka you having very low ping), which will of course cause you a whole lotta lag. You should've tried out other servers in countries nearby India :) It always showed your pin right besides your username :D

That would actually result in very high ping. High ping = more time required for data to travel = lag.

Opps sorry :D My bad. Been quite a while since I was on Kaillera :D

Edit: I see a GI member has voted as "No". Dude, post here who you are and we'll try our best to help you out with emulation. You seriously don't know what you're missing :)

On topic: I used to jump around like a monkey when a new Metal Slug rom would get released on the internet :D My dad used to get REALLY MAD at me when I used to download 60+ mb neogeo roms off the net on a dial up connection as they used to charge LIKE HELL for those type of connections back then :( VSNL anyone :P

I chose 'No'. Don't know sh¡t about 'emulation'.

EDIT: Tell me what I'm missing.

Okay...do you know a game that you played in an Arcade way back and wanna play it again on your computer ? or do you remember any old school 2D game that you might have played on friend's console and couldn't get it coz it was too damn costly ? Have you played Super Mario World (SNES) or Samurai Shodown 1 to 4 ? or ever played the arcade versions of King of Fighters or Street Fighter ? Do you know what Metal Slug is ?

:)

I remember downloading 500 MB worth of n64 roms in a month on my Dad's office dialup and how he exploded when the bill finally arrived. And the downloads were in addition to playing Diablo on Battle.net every day for 2-3 hours.

Is it possible for me to join u guys through kaillera?? Im willing to play any 2d versus game! :D So please let me know. ..we can have a great time!!

And as for finding servers...there were none located in India or close...i tried to take the servers which had the lowest ping rate for me...even those were high too..like 400ms... yeah kaillera seems to be down..cause yesterday i tried to open the list of servers..but it failed. Also i went through some tutorial where u can setup ur own server..one needs a dedicated bandwidth from ur ISP through which we can host the kawaks games..

Yeah I played some of those games.. OK.. So it's something that allows old school games to be run on a computer?

Yes its a program but there are various programs for various different consoles/machines as the hardware differs a lot. Here are the various emulators that I think every person should try out....

1. NES (Nintendo Entertainment System)

2. SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System)

3. Winkawaks (Awesome CPS1, CPS2, and NeoGeo emulator)

4. MAME.

You can download most of those emulators from here....

http://www.emuparadise.org/emulators/systems.php

You can grab the latest version of Winkawaks from here....

http://cps2shock.retrogames.com/

You can grab the latest version of Mame from here....

http://mame32.classicgaming.gamespy.com/

Aight...thats it for the emulators. Now, once you have the emulator that emulates a particular system, all you need are games for that emulator, which are called ROMS.

You can get most of the NES & SNES roms from here....

http://www.emuparadise.org/roms/

You can get ALMOST ALL the Winkawaks roms from here....

http://www.retroroms.net/modules/news/

Get registered and LOG IN. After logging in, click "Downloads" in the section on the left hand side. It will again tell you to input username and password but this time for getting access to the rom servers. Those remain the same as your login username and password.

Then click "downloads" and then choose "Winkawaks". It will show you all the winkawaks roms, aka cps1, cps2 and neogeo roms. Download whichever rom you wanna play and put it in the ROMS folder in Winkawaks. :( Also, if you wanna play NeoGeo games, then don't forget to download the neogeo.zip file and put it in the ROMS folder, otherwise, winkawaks will show you an error. Neogeo.zip is also available in that rom list :)

Trust me, its WORTH IT. Winkawaks is an awesome emulator :)

You can also find MAME roms at the above link.

Enjoy!!! and let me know if you run into any trouble :)

My father used to pick up the phone every now and then just to check if I was online. Remember we used to hear that screeching sound when the internet was on :P

I have yet to readup on how to set up your own server, etc, and also how to set up Kaillera on LAN. You see the problem is, me and my buddies also work together and that is why our computers are at one place and LANed. We barely get time to finish our work and check out whats going on in the social front. Its gonna take some time for me to set up all of this, and we aren't even sure we can continue playing for more than an hour or so :P

Anyways, I will let you know if I make any progress in that front :)

Same here dude. It used to take me at least 3 to 4 hours to download a 60+ mb neogeo rom :D
