Shantz
I personally hate Nokias after using Blackberry and Iphone. Nokia releases the same damn thing again n again n again. I'm pretty sure the N97 will be another big dud too. WinMo cannot comment but whatever I used of it I didnt like Thanks for the replies DS. 4. Can we write our own apps and put on iPhone without jail breaking and without going through the app store? - I guess, if u know Unix and the Apple OS well you can port your own apps to the Iphone like how people put cracked apps on the Iphone. U being a software guy, will be able to do it But can we do it without jail-breaking? I mean I used to write a lot of programs\scripts for my WM phones to scratch a lot of my small itches. Is that possible with iPhone without jail-breaking? Well this is subjective. No doubt qwerty keypad is good, but touchscreen is something else. IMO, I feel the Blackberry Bold is a good buy if u ain getting an Iphone. That phone is simply amazing and is damn powerful. My brother in law bought it recently and its just too good. Infact an offer is going on eBay India with close to 5k bucks off. I meant phones which have qwerty keypads _and_ a touchscreen as well. So you get the best of both worlds. (I have a pretty old phone that has this combo, the first of this kind, HTC Wizard ) BTW, another "issue" (which might be a non-issue for many people) is that iPhone has a capacitive touch screen. While that means easy usage with fingers, it also means that you can't use a stylus, and any precise movements are not possible. So, if you like to take handwritten notes, etc then that you can't do with iPhone. But I guess everyone is moving towards capacitive now. So, after some time this is not going to be an option at all. _Batman_
1. No removable battery2. Will it finally support multi-tasking? why re u so particular about removable battery, do u carry multiple batteries with other phones ? multi-tasking is supported in iphone if u install few apps ( which keeps the opened app active in the background) Edited May 12, 2009 by topspin

Hmm, I dont think its possible without jailbreaking. BTW why the aversion from jailbreaking? There is absolutely no issue with it, doesnt void your warranty and can be restored easily. I guess u already know, but jus in case, jailbreaking just removes that security check that is carried out while installing apps on a jailed phone. Some sorta hash function I believe. Jailbreaking is a non issue really. It doesnt matter if u do and if u like writing apps you will def have to jailbreak. And yea, u can only use your finger with the iPhone. I heard its an issue in Nordic countries where people wear gloves during winter. They find it difficult to use the phone. I've seen special iPhone gloves with small cut outs at the top edit: Yeah there is a app in the Cydia store that supports background apps. Maybe you could write a better app to scratch your itches ... Edited May 12, 2009 by Death Stryke

lastAvenger
You dropped your phone 32 times What do you do with it? Play volleyball\volleyphone or something? I have been an iPhone naysayer till now but with the 3.0 update it seems to iron out a lot of my qualms. The only concerns that remain: 1. No removable battery - Why do you want one ? If its under warranty they will replace it,if u need a new battery after ur warranty is over, they have a battery program 2. Will it finally support multi-tasking? - Some apps do, new iPhone might but its a waste of battery, Push will solve a lot of apps like IM needing to be connected always, iPod & Safari support multi-tasking btw, 3. Third party servicing if needed? - Why ? Apple and your cellular operator will fix it, parts are available though so one can try getting it fixed in grey market i guess 4. Can we write our own apps and put on iPhone without jail breaking and without going through the app store? - Sure if you know Xcode/OSX. With the new Microsoft AppStore coming, you might wanna check their T & C which is even more anal Edit: And yeah, you can never get a better msging feeling with iPhone as compared to any other phone which has a hardware qwerty keyboard.. Look for such options as well. I think G2 is about to come out (Android based) and some Raphael successors from HTC (WM based) will be released soon as well.. Android is gonna suck. The prob is all these phones are not multi-touch enabled. Sure android is gonna be better than Symbian & WinMo at certain level but clearly a gen back. Check out Sammy's new Android based phone, the reviewer has himself said how bad the onscreen k/b is and doesn't work well with the finger. New iPhone Specs : Take this for what it is -- a totally unverified rumor from a Chinese forum -- but a set of specs for a next-gen iPhone have leaked out along with this screenshot, and they're not entirely far-fetched. According to the alleged leak, iPhone model MB717LL 9 ("iPhone2,1" perhaps?) will have a 600MHz processor (up from the current 400MHz unit), 256MB of RAM (from the current 128MB), 32GB of storage, a 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus, as well as a digital compass and FM radio, all while retaining the same battery, basic shape, and screen size. Do we believe it? Well, if we were to conservatively guess at specs for a next-gen Apple phone that's pretty much what we'd come up with -- with the exception of FM -- so we're not shaking our heads too hard. Plus we've definitely seen evidence that a compass will figure into the equation, and there's endless whispers that the camera will see an upgrade. Still, only Steve and the gang know for sure, and we're (probably) not finding out till they're ready -- WWDC, are you here yet? http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/12/new-iph...32gb-3-2mp-cam/

The newer versions that I have access to are quite good. And onscreen k/b is actually just a proof of concept as of now. It is getting better. Anyways, with hw kb you wont need it. PS: Don't be too sure about multi-touch not coming to Android. It'll be there for sure quite soon. And yours truly will have some role to play in it

mainhost
guys...im really stuck here and could use someone to get me out of the trenches. Now i need a phone...a touchscreen based smartphone...Ive looked everywhere and tried to narrow down my needs. Seen the Blackberry storm, Htc touch diamind 2, Sony Xperia, Android but i kind of finalized on two: 1.) Samsung Omnia i900 2.) Iphone 3g The problem is...I cant go any further... I really like the Iphone touchscreen but lack of some features is excrutiating. Also I know many techies feel claustrophobic with the iphone. Omnia looks good, but I need someone to gives hands on feedback about the touchscreen responsiveness and if the phone is very sluggish or not. It would be really helpful if current owners of these phones can state what they like and dislike about the phones. What im looking for basically is: 1.) Good msging feel...I text a lot so it needs to be as fast as possible 2.) Sound quality during calls 3.) Decent media experience...need not be amazing...but enough to rotate songs during a walk 4.) Should not be extremely delicate... 5.) Scope for future improvment... So please...let me know...need to buy asap... IPhone is a good choice, i own IPhone and blackberry storm. And i would say IPhone is way more better thn any other touch screen. But my fav phone is still blacberry pearl. Its not touch screen, but i love it. Iphone is good, but with few applications phone its slow, but its not big deal, you just need to restart the phone. Apple support is good. And my fav application on IPhone is Jadoo VNC, if you get the iphone, i would just that application.

It would be nice if devices started having it then it will be a good competition for Apple. Microsoft needs to hurry up and release the delayed Windows Mobile 7 but still I look at other devices like Palm Pre and then Apple iPhone, even though Pre will be a good competition for iPhone still there are things which Apple has done it right whether its the design, interface or the software. Edit - G1 Android is already multi-touch enabled but Google needs to implement it in Android although there are apps atleast *some* taking advantage of it. Its the same thing with HTC Diamond being multi-touch enabled but no support from the OS. Edited May 12, 2009 by lastAvenger

Its the same thing with HTC Diamond being multi-touch enabled but no support from the OS. WM7 is going to be horribly delayed..even more than what their marketing team would like you to think about..And anyways, there is nothing very good about WM7 till now..I will say that most people will be disappointed when they see it.6.5 which will be out soon also bring just surface deep changes only. G1\Diamond are not multi-touch enabled. The apps that are giving you that multi-touch option, they are using something I can only call "simulated multi-touch". The support needs to come from the hardware first before the OS can give it, and these phone do not have that hardware. And yeah, iPhone has the best interface (though I don't like it very much) but they surely dont have the best hardware\software, especially in the area what a phone is meant to do (calls\data). It has pretty bad performance (I have a 90 page official report about it )
lastAvenger
Well! I'm not aware about simulated multi-touch but from what i recall are from the following two links http://gizmodo.com/5039281/ http://gizmodo.com/5139087/multitouch-impl...id-unofficially I'm aware about Windows Mobile 6.5 which isn't doing anything great but WinMo 7 is suppose to be built from scratch so i'm assuming a lot of changes. http://phonearea.net/microsoft-building-wi...-7-from-scratch also i find this article a bit funny but it could be true : http://venturebeat.com/2009/02/09/apple-as...oogle-complied/ Edited May 12, 2009 by lastAvenger
Nemo
hi.. i dont know where to post this, but as its related to my cell, so here goes- I have a nokia n82, decent gadget, love the camera + flash. Anyway, today, due to some rough handeling It came as a shock to me that the square key in the middle of the phone (dont really know the name) has come off !!! Not totaly came off, its still hanging by a thread of what i can only assume is some sort of adhesive. I can see the green computer-chip thingy inside, but the flat, plate like cover has come unstuck. I never knew or though that nokia wud use cheap adhesive to make the phones.. So, what shud I do ? My friend advice me to use fevi-quick or its ilk to stick it back, but I am not sure. The phone is more than an year old. the red incircled part is what i am talking about. Sorry for the noob talk. Death Stryke
^Bro, I'd suggest u dont buy an Omnia now. If u can wait, there are better phones coming out in the next quarter. Omnia will be a big investment. I'd rather wait.

G1 does have hardware support but HTC diamond doesn't. Baaki there is a lot of code churn involved in WM7 indeed (won't go so far as to say written from scratch) but so far it looks pretty ugly and its an achievement if it even boots up..
