ok guys i think ill be picking up an omnia...

now what really baffles me is the firmware upgrade stuff...ive checked many many sites like modaco and sumsung_omnia.org but cannot understand head or tail...so anyone up to the mark with any kind of knowledge please help me out...

NOw my Omnia firmware says its at Phone : JPID1 and PDA: JVIC3....this means the phone firmware is for ARABIC regions and the PDA firmware is for OMAN....

Problem is Samsung does not offer upgrades for the country I am in now...neither does it for India...

So Im in a bit of a fix...I want to upgrade to the better firmware that is available. Ive heard of a method where we can flash the firmware to DXIA5 which is a singapore firmware that is a open market and unlocked. After i get it to that firmware do I need to keep upgrading by telling the samsung site my mobile is singapore...i mean if i stay in India or later in australia will it cause problems for me having a singapore firmware...

Also the whole issue with custom firmwares...how do I go about doing it...and is it a reversible process...will I need to first make it a DXIA5 to start applying custom firmware.

Help please...Im going to get the phone in my hand in 5 hours...but i really need to know before I take the plunge...

Shantz : Did you check out this leak yesterday ?

Over the past week there have been a ton of rumors in relation to a variety of Microsoft's upcoming products and services. The folks up in Redmond have been hard at work for over a year on a top secret project codenamed "Pink". We get the question all the time, "What exactly is ‘Pink'?" The people working on the project have been extremely quiet, not much is known except that the device isn't going to be manufactured by Microsoft.

A few weeks ago The Wall Street Journal reported that Microsoft and Verizon were in negotiations on launching project "Pink". Today another rumor has surfaced thanks to our good friend Mary Jo Foley. She's apparently received the following specifications for the WM7 chassis, which will be the core for Microsoft's project "Pink".

Core requirements:

Processor: ARM v6+, L2 Cache, VFP, Open GL ES 2.0 graphics HW (QCOM 8k, Nvidia AP15/16 and TI 3430 all meet spec)

Memory: 256MB+ DRAM, 1G+ Flash (at least 512MB fast flash – 5MB/s unbuffered read @4K block size)

Display: WVGA (800×480) or FWVGA (854×480) 3.5" or greater diagonal

Touch: Multi-touch required

Battery: Sufficient to meet Days of Use LTK requirements.

Controls: Start, Back, Send and End are required (soft controls allowed as long as they are always present).

Peripherals:

Camera: 3MP+, flash optional, 2nd camera optional (VGA resolution sufficient)

GPS: aGPS required

Sensors required: Light Sensor, Compass (3 axis, 5 degrees, 100 Hz sample rate), Accelerometer (3 axis, 2mg resolution, 100 Hz sample rate)

USB: High speed required, 20 MB/s transfer rate.

BlueTooth: BT2.1 required, must run MSFT BT stack, CSR BlueCore6 or later recommended.

Wi-Fi: 802.11B/G required, must run MSFT Native Wi-Fi stack, Atheros 6002 or Broadcomm 4325 recommended.

Connectors: Micro USB and 3.5mm Audio required.

Options:

FM tuner: If tuner HW is present it will be detected and supported by the Media application.

Haptics

SD Card (Micro SD recommended)

DPAD, qwerty or 12/20 key keyboards all optional

Microsoft's project "Pink" isn't going to be released anytime soon; however sources close to the team have told us that the device itself is ready for manufacturing stage. No word on who is going to manufacture it. It might be premature to say this, but this device is going to rock if you're a Zune fan: Windows Mobile 7, Zune software integration, Windows Mobile Marketplace, and MyPhone services are just the tip of the iceberg.

hmm, i dont have much info about custom firmware for omnia. HTC based phones are generally easy to unlock/flash and you can get all details from xda-developers.com. Will try to find out more info about omnia. You can also try PMing Obaid bhai or HSP. They have Omnia.

Shantz : Did you check out this leak yesterday ?

Yeah, I did. Actually I had a sort of hunch/doubt about this sometime ago when I came across some "material" inadverdently. But, at the moment, I also dont have any more details. On the surface, from the specs, it looks an excellent device but we can't say anything unless we see it for real..Where MS is concerned, a lot of requirements are left at the requirements table itself and never get to the release stage

^ I completely agree. Was an internal tester for Microsoft for three years

A lot of stuff is added/removed in the last moment, you will be surprised how much stuff is left out in the last moment between Beta > RC > Final

Wow, that is so cool (being the itnernal tester for MS)..you get to have so much stuff early

Having played with the Omnia for 2 days as much as possible and after flashing some roms (quite a headache), I unfortunately have dropped the prospect of buying one...atleast not now.

Dont get me wrong here, the phone is great...its bloody powerful, I mean when you compare it to the iphone in terms of sheer power and amount of features(minus cam) and stuff going on inside, the Omnia or Xperia are far far ahead.

But as someone mentioned in this thread before, the very UI is quite putting off. For someone who has never seen or used an Iphone, yeah i can understand, the phone will look like something out of the future and the layman will lap it up. But having used the iphone(2g) for a couple of months, I just could not go back to touching the screen and bearing the infuriating wait for the phone to respond.

Now many may say its pretty good, but i dont know...not good enough for me. I could pretty much sense delay everywhere. I checked out almost every bloody feature there is, flashed a whole bucketload of roms (the initial area code changing flash was scary...i was sweating...chances of phone getting bricked quite a bit there and warranty immediately void if phone vendor finds out the code was being tampered with...165 rials f**ked). I liked the whole vibration touch thingy where it gives you haptic feedback, felt nice...but I knew somewhere it was eating away the battery joyously.

The Camera is pretty neat with 5 mega pixel and the works...but ive got loads of cybershots so I dont give a damn.

Music quality...good...not amazing...good...and there are some slowdowns when using touch player...(flashed rom players work a bit better)

The thing that got me really heated up was the bloody thing on the box that says, "Accelerometer", the phone goes completely BONKERS when you try flipping it over or around...sometimes it spins around obediently...and sometimes it just sits there saying,"f**k off! Im not your bitch!"...I thought there was somthing messed up with my piece...so went in and checked two more pieces but no sir...quite arrogant...however some flashing later...the touch and accelerometer kinda got better...or maybe i just wanted it to get better...nothing felt right...

Now anyone who is getting negative vibes from this rant...please dont get me wrong...for what it is....its a bloody brilliant phone and destroys many other phones...including the iphone...but it retains one small niggle...sluggishness...it might be a little...but its enough to bug me...

by the way...india completely and UTTERLY SUCKS when it comes to pricing...im seeing people here quoting astronomical quotes for these phones...the Omnia i got for 18-20k when converted...The HTC Touch Diamond was going for 25k...and the Xperia for 22-25k approx...man the pricing difference is day and night...

however for some funny reason...the Iphone still retails for approx 30k...completely factory unlocked...dont know why...

Im sticking to my trusty K800i for some time now...has served me for 2 years without hiccups...damn i was feeling so helpless on that Omnia's touchpad...was even funnier trying to watch my dad extract a number from my phone...he fiddled around for a good portion of 10 minutes...started a song by accident(which kept on playing until his surrender) and then just ggave up and went, "What the f**k is this?"...For my needs of heavy msging, ive strongly decided to stick to something physical to type on...(except maybe only the Iphone 3.0's QWERTY landscape...seems a little more forgiving)...

Speaking of which...I think the Palm Pre just sits EXACTLY where i want it to...its got everything I need...multi touch, gesture based control...looks slicker...UI caters to my tastes...I like it better than the Iphone...It does many things better...its got that QWERTY pad that i need so bad, and most importantly....its f**king fast....

And i read in this thread, someone saying...maybe market tantrik(not sure man...if its not you then white flag)..that the Palm Pre is picked from the Iphone...COME ON...Palm has ben doing this since before the Iphone was even conceived...i believe even before the Ipod surfaced...this just seems like the next step for Palm...

Also would like to wait to take a look at whatever Microsoft has got...what was it...'Pink'?

I think this June is going to be hot for phonewatchers...Palm Pre, Microsoft Pink(ran out of colours? PINK?) and Iphone 3.0...

Hope Palm Pre is available for retail in India...before August...or Atleast in the gulf...

^^ nice review Killu..omnia is definitely going to be sluggish because of the tons of layers they have in the UI..and you wont get anything better than Pre atleast till 2009 end (unless G2 shows up)

The sad part is, folks @ XDA-developers have already ported the interface to HTC devices like Diamond lol

@obaid bhai...bhai i told na...that phone is awesome..i would kill to get those features with the iphone or pre UI...that would be one killer phone...samsung might be on it..who knows...

Anyways...got the Xperia in hand...played around with it quite a bit, once again..this phone is for people with acquired taste...Already being a Sony Ericsson user I thought I knew what to expect, but this phone is quite an exit from the previous entries...Sony's first windows mobile phone is what I heard...once again...now I see why people think thrice before going for windows mobile...anything related to the OS comes pre built with some sort of lag...and the panel interface, while certainly new...did put me off again...there were 7 panels on screen all pretty small...all taking their own sweet time...I kinda liked the Omnia UI better...

but coming to build quality...man this phone has got the goods...complete metal finish...this phone looks costly and strong...anyone who wants a serious looking phone...this is it...

However, personally for me, the wait continues... :wOOtjumpy:

@killu..do you suggest i also flash my firmware to the latest one...i saw that the latest is hj1 for omnia..in my phone its writtten hj2...

i been updating firmware on my nokia phones and it was quite simple...is this the same case for samsung...one thing i noticed then when i went to update the firmware in samsung site it never gave india as the choice in countries...so suppose i select singapore will it harm the phone in anyways...

as for you flashing roms etc...can you just link me up to all that ...if its not that tough i can give it a try...but only willing to take risk if there is very less chance of bricking the phone...like in the case of nokia the only chance of bricking was if net dies down in between or power cut etc...

Well you should go to this site...

www.modaco.com...register on the forums and look for rom discussion...

or www.samsung-omnia.org

on both sites...only download roms from QBUS, SECTOR, SHOKKA9...others may be safe...but I have personally tested out these roms...and I havent faced any problems...

India is not on the Samsung List and Hence no official firmware upgrade...your best bet is to try and flash it to a singapore rom...preferably the DXIA5...everyone says tis stable in the long run and does wonders for your battery life...however in the end in depends on your usage...you'll need to flash it to DXIA5 and then you can officially upgrade for further updates from official samsung site...by selecting singapore(DX is singapore open market phone).

On the other hand...if you want to make your phone super fast...then you might as well hunt for custom roms from the people i mentioned above...custom roms always have risk of bricking...so before flashing be very sure that a large number of people have used that custom rom and dont have any problem...what the usually do in custom roms is to rip the firmware of unwanted apps...hence making it run faster...take a look...im sure youll figure it out easily...
