Cut content from GOW3

Hades' Guardian

gowiiiconcept04.jpg

"God Of War III game director Stig Asmussen has revealed that Sony Santa Monica cut "the biggest cyclops you've ever seen" from the final release.

We reported yesterday that Sony Santa Monica were forced to remove a 'creature with a hundred eyes' called Argus - but he wasn't the only boss to get chopped.

Asmussen told Destructoid in a very interesting interview (so long as you don't mind spoilers):

"We had [Argus and] we had a massive cyclops. I don't know if you remember the door where you enter Hades' Palace; you burn the bramble that's in front of it, and you open the door there. We had a couple of cerberus there guarding the door. The original plan was, the first time you ran through Hades to get to that entrance, that's when the cerberus come down.

"The second time you come through, you just burn the bramble, and you would start to lift up the door, and [the cyclops'] hand was going to come underneath it and just whip it up. From the other side was going to be this huge cyclops, like twice as big as any cyclops you've ever seen before.

"We had a branching mini-game on him and everything. It was really cool, but him and Argus, to get them to completion would have meant that other things would have suffered, and they still had a way to go."

Left: Kratos as a young boy in a God of War scene. Right: The character featured in the website update

The Spartans Stand Tall side of the God of War website has today been updated, with the flickering of what could be a younger Kratos.

On the site, is the recurring visual of the back of a head with the person looking into a flood of water. As you might be able to make out from the above right picture, the character looks like he could be the young Kratos, with a slim figure, shaven head and an angry expression on his face. The picture on the left is of Kratos when a boy, in a scene from the original God of War.

Rumours have been running around that the Ghost of Sparta's sibling, standing behind him will take over as the main character for the PlayStation series after Kratos finished his story - from what we know - in the latest release, God of War III. Maybe, instead, we'll see another prequel.

God Of War Creators Had Different Ideas On Trilogy's Ending

God of War is a unique series, in that three different men lead the development team for each of the three games. How, then, would David Jaffe - original creator of the series - have ended things?

I'm not going to spoil the actual ending, but I can tell you that Jaffe's vision for how the trilogy wound up is quite different to how Stig Asmussen and the Sony Santa Monica team finished the third game.

"What David Jaffe talked about doing was — and I'm not sure how it would happen — basically, you destroy Greek mythology and then Norse mythology is right around the corner", Asmussen told GamePro. "That's the next thing that Kratos would go after. It becomes clear at the end that he's going to become this harbinger of death across different mythologies in the world and maybe carry the series on from there."

Nutty. For what it's worth, God of War II's Cory Barlog has something else in mind entirely. "Cory Barlog talked about Kratos becoming Death", says Asmussen. "He pretty much becomes the Grim Reaper at the end of the game and his blades become sickles. They're both incredibly good ideas, but you need a director to be passionate about the story and understand it intimately. If I had used Dave or Cory's idea, I wouldn't have been as passionate about it."

You know, I actually like Jaffe's ending best. It seems the most ridiculous, which is what the God of War series has always done best. That and it reminds me of Age of Mythology, which is always a good thing.

David Jaffe's ending would have been the awesomesauce!!!!

I somehow like Barlog's idea better..... :fear: Jaffe's idea would have eventually lead to something equivalent to clash of mythologies; and would have made the franchise more of a cash cow ready to be milked

never knew i would ever say something like that about Jaffe
