Persona 5

Anybody who is going to make a significant headway into this game this week, help me with the below:

1. How can you run away from on-going battles? Kotaku says it is possible, I can't figure out how.

2. Is it possible to rest a confidant in your party without subbing them for someone else?

Have waited too long for this, all recent games are done and schedule wide open for P5 now.

Cool, can get started today then. btw does it have an option to go for Jap audio + eng subtitles? i normally prefer that.

Yes it does, but you have to download the Japanese Language pack DLC for that (appx. 2.8 GB - 3 GB I believe). After downloading, you can change the language in the title screen before starting a new game or loading a saved game.

BTW Pro Tip: Enable Animation subtitles (Different from In-Game Subtitles option I think) from title screen if you are going to play in Japanese. The game starts with an anime cut scene, but English subs will not appear if this is not switched on. By default it is kept at off. I did not see carefully when I started my play-through and therefore had to see the first anime cutscene without subs.

BTW I tried both Japanese audio and English audio and both are great.

@R3D_D3ViL: I have not tried escaping from battles yet, but from reddit I got this way: L2 -> Escape Battle. BTW it seems you cannot escape battles where you were ambushed (Maybe a Confidant ability will unlock it later, I don't know)

Persona games generally have good English VA so I'm definitely going with English. Sure it ruins immersion a bit but I can accept that. I watch most anime in English so it's hardly an issue for me.

The good part about this approach is that you can experience both languages in a single play-through. Feel like listening to dialogue in English, switch to it. After some time you feel like you want to hear the dialogue in Japanese, you can change again. Just save the game, go to the title screen and re-load. There is no hard limit that you can only go English or Japanese in one play-through. Depends on how you feel.

You can even do something like keep it in Japanese and switch to English when you reach an area/character where English will be spoken (as per story/real life locality etc.). Or you can just do whatever you want. Voice acting in both is stellar (Except Igor, just can't get used to his new menacing English voice after the soft spoken old man voice we had till now. Really loved his old VA)

Atlus has really done a commendable job in both VAs as well as giving the option to switch so we can enjoy both. One of the few games to have such an option and we should really congratulate them for it. I really feel it's worth the time and HDD space taken to download the free Japanese voice pack DLC (You should also download the other free DLCs as well; they are great and one is for Merciless Difficulty, the hardest difficulty in the game if you like to play it that way).

Igor's Japanese voice actor passed away, so they also ended up replacing the English actor to keep consistency.

I will download all the optional stuff. As for difficulty, Normal is just fine for me and the games have a habit of throwing difficulty spikes every once in a while, I don't expect P5 to be any different in that regard.

OMG the first palace is huge. It's becoming a marathon to reach the palace treasure. My team is limping along bruised and battered to the treasure. Izanagi Picaro is literally saving my hide.

A tip guys: If you are like me and want to reach the treasure in one trip to the Palace (Getting out of Palace costs days and it's not wise to waste any in Persona) Save your SP as much as possible. Unlike earlier Persona games, it's a really precious resource here and you will be thankful later if some characters has SP for some Dia (Single target heal) left. I did not find any chests with Snuff Soul or the like. Only some Personas gave me some items to restore SP via negotiation.

BTW the Palaces in this game are really far, far better than the generic dungeons in the previous Persona games. Stealth really adds a lot to the gameplay and there are a lot of ways to traverse a place along with some hidden pathways and shortcuts as well.

If the first palace itself is so big, I don't want to think about the size of the later Palaces.

Finally ended up starting the game yesterday evening, couldn't resist and played for 4 hours straight.

- Game simply oozes style. I love how each Persona game has a distinct look and color theme. Love the black, red and white!

- Nice to finally have some detailed character models during gameplay scenes.

- Only 4 hours in and it's already pretty dark. Even darker than the previous two games. I did not expect that opening sequence.

- Awakening scenes have been pretty badass!

- Music is great as expected. It still needs to grow on me though.

- New Igor voice doesn't suit the character at all.

- Morgana is pretty awesome for a mascot character.

- Ms. Kawakami

- Did I mention the game is stylish as f**k?

The game still hasn't opened up yet and I can't wait to play more.

EDIT: forgot a couple of points.

Well, the music is there so the Velvet Room is still awesome. Also like the new assistants especially the rude one... lol.

Anyway, 5 hours and 30 minutes later the game finally opened up! Halfway through the first dungeon and I have to agree with roun, the dungeons are a HUGE improvement over the previous games. There's so much to them than just fighting shadows or looking for treasures. Hell, it even feels like Thief at times. Stealth is a nice addition as well. There are minor tweaks to the combat that makes battles so much more streamlined and quick.

I think I'm about halfway through the first palace (at least judging from the dialog) and decided to take a break after the mini-boss encounter. In fact I pushed on after it but got jumped by group of shadows in the next area which ended up in my MC dying. Besides the team was already running low on SP so a break was necessary. I've still got plenty of days remaining so it's okay.

Some spoiler talk about an early villain...

Kamoshida is such a slimy bastard! I didn't expect the game to handle such heavy themes early on. I can't wait to take him down.

BTW, does anyone know how to increase guts? I want to progress with the doctor.

I reached the treasure on my first run. It was a real thrill to finally reach it in such a manner (Managing your SP, scrounging up SP and cures from whichever corner it was left, negotiating to get items and hoping it will yield additional items for SP desperately etc.) They added some puzzle elements and even shortcuts to discover to safe rooms. It was really fun. But I don't know if I will be able to do that with all palaces, looking at the state of the first one. Anyway, I had to get to the the treasure in 1 run since I wanted to focus on all the Social links, personality stats etc. on other days. Just keep in mind that the palace will take 2-3 days to complete due to story reasons. So any day you come back is another day in addition to the 2-3 days. I suspect this is why they were so generous with the time limit this time around.

For increasing Guts, there are a number of ways. First, you can borrow and read the book "Pirate Legend" from the library (You can also sometimes read, when you get a seat in trains, so it's always handy to keep a book around. You never know when you get this additional opportunity to read. I also watched a movie at the Shibuya Central Square theatre which gave me a +3 guts

Lol the movie was an easter egg to Slumdog Millionaire. The charecter at the end even spoke in a (bad) Indian accent.

In addition to all of this, spending time with Tae Takemi alsoincreases Guts by itself.

Hope it helps :)

This! Stylish is the one word which can describe this game. Loving it so far.

He is such an a**hole, irritates me more than it should. I am only 5 days into the game and it tackles a lot of dark themes about the competitive spirit of today's education world.

Thank you. I'll do that.

I did notice that taking part in the trials increased guts.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention, some more tips: Go to the Shibuya diner and order stuffs. It always increases knowledge in addition to 1 other stat (For ex. when I ordered Hot Coffee, it increased +2 knowledge and +1 Guts). Also always keep the bio-nutients from the flower shop ready and put it in your houseplant whenever possible (Increases kindness without consuming any time-slot at all). There are some others as well, but I will leave you guys to explore. Even I have got to explore more and see what else all those districts can offer.

BTW Spoiler for first boss; open this after you have completed it and if possible share your opinion on it as well

I pitied Kamoshida after he was defeated. He (Both Shadow and real versions) kinda looked pathetic and sad after that. The VA did a really stupendous job of conveying the emotions of that character. You kinda feel sorry for him later.

Also anyone else get the feeling that the game is difficult to put down once you are playing? I always end up wanting to see "Just one more day" or "Just exploring to the next safe spot" before shutting down this game

Oh I already did the plant nutrient thing once. Stumbled upon the shop while I was roaming around. Now I need to remember to pick up more.

BTW the loot you steal from the palace sells for a good amount. That along with all the money earned from fights helped me buy the current best available gear for the entire party.

It does, but we need money for other things as well, not just gear. Increasing your personal stats (Kindness, Guts, Charm etc.) costs money. Also, I had to ensure that I always have a persona of the arcana which you are improving the Social Link of. In addition, I also had to buy medicines for healing, so SP is not wasted. All of this left me pretty much broke. I did not buy any gear and just used the ones that I found in the Palace, as and when I found it.
