Some of the story development during October... wow!

Almost at the end of the 6th palace now, 66 hours and counting... and still having a blast.

BTW, Sojiro is quickly becoming one of my favorite characters in the game!

I committed to Tae pretty much earlier in the game. Kinda maxed the confidant fast as I liked her a lot :P but then it is a struggle not to commit to Makato and Harumi :( both has amazing backstories.

Anyway done with the 7th palace and in December now. Have a feeling, game is coming to a closure but things didn't go according to my plans and have some surprises here and there. Around 80 hours and I am suddenly realizing that i won't get another persona game in a while so slowed right down and enjoying maxing out stats and confidants.

I'd like to finish it before Prey comes out but you're right, it's going to be a long wait for another Persona game. It's quite sad actually.

Right now most of my social stats are at 4 except Charm which is maxed out (thanks to Makoto). It's amazing how much time gets freed up after maxing out a social stat or a Confidant. I've also reached level 10 with Kawakami and now I can...

request for a special massage from her (lol) and go out even after visiting Palaces/Mementos.

Oh man, everything that happened in November, post-Palace 6... mind blown! That was some really good writing. Major spoilers below...

I was already suspecting you-know-who being the culprit but the way it was done was fantastic. In fact better than Persona 4. The way the whole "plan" was slowly disclosed to you was truly brilliant. Somehow I feel Makoto is the true leader of the Phantom Thieves.

It looks like I'm quickly approaching endgame now and I have only maxed out about half of the confidants. A few are sitting at rank 9. Still, I'm super pumped for the next palace!

Finally done with the game in 92 hours. Took a day off from work to complete this :P was addicted to it so much.

Story - Brilliant is the one word to describe the story. How small it starts, how it gradually pulls you in and puts you through one epic moment after another. The last two months in the game was a result of epic writing, fantastic VA and a roller coaster of emotions. Atlus at its best.

Characters - As any persona game, characters/team mates are the core of this game along with combat. The game presents its characters with their unique back stories and makes you care about them in a way you won't forget even if they are sometimes annoying as Ryuji. I couldn't max out some characters so probably a second playthrough is warranted.

Combat - I am a fan of turn based combat especially because it makes you think before you act. I was playing in normal but there were times when I had to quit, load the save and come back with different party members just because my strategy was incorrect. The feeling you get after taking down powerful enemies which you couldn't before is pretty amazing. There are tons of personas with different powers and having a mixture of attack/defense/magic moves determines the combat for you. SP management is crucial here and if you want to tackle palaces in a single day, you need a lot items with you.

Music - Addictive!! it won't leave your head and the only flaw I felt was that, after reaching 3/4th of the game, you will be tired of some tracks and feel like it needs a change. But during combat, its a blast.

Presentation - Remember this was a PS3 only game initially so graphics is not something mindblowing after coming from HZD but presentation is uber cool and stylish. Something only Japanese studios can or would do.

@Tyler,

I did predict 'you know who' is the assassin but the way MC deceive him and how it was presented blew my mind as well. You have more surprises ahead ;)

and yes, Makato is indeed a cut above other team mates.

Basically I enjoyed it way more than P4/P3 but each persona experience holds different memories for me so all of them are great!

Yep the game is truly something special. I'm about 70ish hours in and I expect to be close to 100 by the time it ends. That said, time just flew by while playing, it honestly didn't feel like 70 hours at all. There are several 8-10 hour games I've played that actually felt longer somehow.

Yeah so far it's tied with Nier: Automata as my personal GOTY, might surpass it by the end. It's just that good. It's a shame that most people will give it a pass because you know... JRPG... dated graphics... turn-based combat... etc etc. But games like this come once in a generation.

Anyway I'm in the 7th Palace right now, which reminds me of (movie comparison spoiler)

Kingsman: The Secret Service

.

The game itself is a lot like (another couple of movie/book spoilers)

Inception, especially with the central mechanic of changing hearts and the cognitive versions of people you know in real life, very similar. In fact I find Persona 5 more realistic in this regard as the cognitive worlds are more dream-like than the ones in Inception, which were too grounded. Also everything past November 21 feels a lot like the 7th Harry Potter book.

Also I'm sure the (Mementos target)...

Homeless Assassin is a reference to The Raid 2. Dude even looks similar.

Romance in this game

Sojiro must have been a real player in his youth.

You can literally romance everyone. Take one on Valentine's day and get their chocolate (Boost their Confidant level in NG+). Others find out your cheating the next day and beat you up. Then Sojiro uses his silver tongue and makes excuses for you (Inheritor to Naruto's Talk no jutsu, if you know what I mean). He makes excuses and convinces everyone. He even gives you his chocolate to boost his Confidant level in NG+. Ryuji's reaction message later is also comedy gold. The entire sequence is too funny.

Know what the best part about it is? No one breaks up with you at all. You get lovers dialogue with every lady at the end of the game, instead of just one if you had been monogamous.

Hehe I know you can pretty much...

romance anyone with no real repercussions but my MC's one true love is Makoto. In NG+ or re-release I'm totally going the Tae or Hifumi route though. Everyone else feels a little creepy, Kawakami is nice but man her entire setup is completely creepy. Ohya is drunk most of the time and Futaba is like an awesome little sister (can't look at her any other way). Ann is probably the blandest in terms of personality even though the game constantly wants you to know how hot she is. And I never got a proper chance to interact with Haru, who seems nice despite her rich kid status. That leaves the fortune teller who again, I haven't interacted with much at all.

Also this is probably the first Persona game that allows you to romance adults. I'm sure Kawakami is like 29-30 and Tae and Ohya are both in their late 20s. The MC is 16...

Agree with you

Ann's entire SL story was completely bland;I almost felt like what's the point in that story anyway

Tae was one that felt real to me.She seems to be the only female SL with a good story. Hifumi, have not done yet. Chihiro was funny, considering how surprised she always gets. Kawakami seems almost like a relative. Also, surprised Sojiro stuck up for cheating in case of Futaba, considering his relationship with her.

Overall, romance doesn't seem like the point in this game at all. I personally like some of the male SL and personalities better. The Sun SL (Toranosuke Yoshida) had one of the best stories of all. Yusuke SL was also very entertaining considering his personality. Heck, even Ryuji's story was quite touching, even though he is generally one of the most annoying character.

In this game, at least story wise I feel some of the guys SL stories were just better

Yep, most of the character stories are really well done.

Hifumi's S-Link unlocks some of the best combat abilities btw. Same goes for Shinya.

Also found Yoshida's money trick during combat to be quite useful. I was able to shake down shadows for like 25K per battle.
