I've never played any jrpg before but was kinda interested in p5 and saw it's Gameplay video. It looks so awesome.

The UI is so stylish and the characters are oozing with swag.

Can someone please explain me basic Gameplay elements of this game. I am really interested in it.

IIRC from p3, you play as a protagonist with a dual life , you play as a school kid during the day and crawl dungeons and defeat monsters with your team at night .... in p3, the dungeons would change form everytime you visit them.... And it's purely TB and party based combat !

Same here. Reached the end of the year (Dec.-Jan) and did not progress beyond for almost an entire year just because of not wanting the game to end (along with being unable to do the last fishing SL, but still).

That is my state of affairns with MGS V ! Bought it on day 1 but not finishing it as I dont want MGS to end ! :P Its the last MGS and I dont want that feeling that I am done and there is no more !

To add to what everyone said (and I didn't watch the video because I am on a media blackout for P5)

- The games are RPGs set in modern day Japan. The settings change from game to game but essentially you'll always be a teenage school student.

- Half of the game is about attending school, making friends, forming relationships etc. All of this in turn helps your character grow stronger in some way. This is the "Social" aspect of the game. There's usually choices to be made here as your time in a day is limited and you can't do everything. Part of the fun is to figure out how you can make the most out of each day. You also have to study for exams!

- You can explore various places on the map such as shopping malls, streets, other landmarks. These also generally house vendors who sell equipment and other stuff.

- The other half of the game involves dungeon crawling and combat. Usually the nights will be spent in making progress in these dungeons, these get progressively harder as the game goes. Expect boss fights and a lot of random encounters. Some of the story based dungeons are scripted and have story elements.

- Combat is strictly turn based. You and your party fights groups of creatures called as shadows. The battle system is deep (but easy to pick up) and has many options including the "Personas" which are kinda like summons that help you during combat.

- Upgrading, obtaining and fusing Personas to make them stronger is a big part of the game.

- The main story usually has some hook to keep you interested. For example a murder mystery where you're trying to catch the person behind several bizarre murders. It's also generally well written and you will grow to care about characters.

- This is very much a Japanese game so expect some level of weirdness.

- These games are generally very long and are meant to be played slowly. You obviously can't do everything in one playthrough but it will still take you anything from 50 to 80 hours to finish.

- The presentation is also different from a typical western RPG. A lot of the story is told via static scenes and portraits. Don't expect fully animated scenes and dialog. Though the amount of these has been growing with each game. For example P4 had a lot of voice acting and animated sequences compared to P3.

- The opening sections are usually quite long (sometimes it takes around 4-5 hours for the game to actually get going). I imagine many folks who are used to western games will be tempted to give up even before the game properly starts.

- There are a lot of other, smaller aspects that are difficult to describe, let's just say there's even more to the games than what I wrote above.

^What he said.

going into P4G I was skeptical and I almost tossed it aside. I'm glad I stuck with it because it is among the top 5 of all games I ever played. Also embrace the japanese weirdness and you'll be fine. In fact accept it and you'll have more fun.

As you can clearly see from my psn signature I'm a fan :)

Person 4 took longer than 4 hours to start....I think closer to 8-10 honestly. That is when the game comes into its own and lets you "play".

But since then I have realised its true for almost all JPRGs.

You won't be saving kingdoms here but attending school , hanging out with friends. All sounds wierd but it doesn't feel weird in the game.

Ya i hope there is a physical PS3 version in India but if not then i would have to miss out on this game.

Yeah, I am not a fan of digital because of my broadband speed.

lol, i remember playing persona 3 for a while on PS2, gave up after some time .... the game is way too long and felt kinda weird !

Oh yeah, i almost gave up on P3 because of that same reason but managed to move forward and that was a good decision.

i have a feeling the physical copies wont be released here.

Even physical copies of recently released Horizon and Nier Automata are not readily available online for quite sometime now.

Importing copies from UK Amazon will cost about 60 GBP all inclusive. I dont know if it is worth it or not.

Better to import the game from shopto or thegamecollection.net. It will be much cheaper that way.
