Latency vs. Bandwidth

Hey,

I have a 1 Mbps LAN internet connection. I have setup a router in order to play games on my PS4. Now when I play shooters online (as in Multiplayer), I get a latency of 300+ ms. This makes it very hard since it takes almost a magazine to kill someone and most of the times they kill me much faster not just because of better reflexes but also because of a lower latency.

Now, I would like to switch to a 1.5 or a 2.5 Mbps internet plan. But I would like to confirm first if this will improve my latency to make online shooters playable or latency has nothing to do with increased bandwidth. All it does it provide more speed.

Also, I'd like to know what kinda setup you guys use i.e., internet plan/speed/connection to play online shooters smoothly on your Xbox 360/One and/or PS3/PS4 and what kinda latency you get in them while playing.

Thank you.

no it wouldn't improve latency at all .. if you change isp it will change depending on isp..

bsnl/reliance have bad pings ... airtel/mtnl have best pings generally.. even a 256 kbps connection is more than enough for smooth gameplay if pings are great ...

latency is dependent on location of server

if you are playing in india 30-40ms

Singapore and Asia 100-150ms

USA and europe 220ms.. these are normal pings..

get airtel and play on asian/singapore servers 100ms pings smooth gameplay ... Indian servers are a rarity ...

even under 200ms ping Its great and playable...

I use to play halo custom edition with 350ms ping to USA servers on reliance 3g.. takes getting used to .. I had to shoot ahead and in front of the player so as to hit him.. I got good at it later.. :P

try testing it with airtel 3g once.. recharge with small pack.. and test pings.. you can even use 2g packs and use it in 3g mode... speed will be capped but pings will be good

wireless have bad pings compared to wired ones

What is your upload speed?

Latency depends on the server location and your location. The closer you are, the better latency you get. It won't change if you change your internet plan.

(based on your location, you should stick to Asian servers).

Pingtest - check for packet loss and stability. If you are having issues and high ping on local servers, contact your ISP or change.

Edit: looks like rish7 already answered. :)

Ping: 280 ms

Jitter: 0 ms

Packet Loss: 0%

So, I am guessing its the ISP and its server's location. Only way of fixing/improving this is changing the ISP. Some games allow selecting of server locations like BF4, but some don't like CoD, KZ etc. It selects automatically and puts you in a match (Console prospective). So I guess change of ISP is the only way but then I gotta make sure the new one is better depending on my needs. Brand doesn't matter. How that ISP's brand works in my location matters more.

^ Not only that, it also depends on the routing to your closest servers.

The biggest issue in India is that there are two landing sites (Bombay and Madras) as far as I am aware. And whoever has a majority stake in them gets the lions share of the bandwidth pie. I think that is Bharti AirTel, Tata Telecom and Reliance Telecom.

What ISP are you currently using?

Your current location being Calcutta, you should get good PING at-least till Singapore and Hong Kong. But that local PING you have shared shows there is poor routing internally, thus you are suffering.

I am on MTNL-Delhi, ~1 Mbps plan get good PING to Singapore and European servers, American servers are variable depending on the disposition. Worst is Australian servers which keep oscillating between ~100 -->300+ PING.

Well, I am using Alliance Broadband. A local ISP here. Been using for a while now. 1 Mbps connection. An ISP recommended by a friend here. I used to play online MMORPGs and League of Legends on EU servers at 170-190 ms. Been a while played those though. Could be a recent issue with the ISP because I remember seeing 100-120 ms ping before on Pingtest. I'll contact them and sort it out. If I can't I'll try to change to Airtel if possible. BSNL sucks pretty hard in Calcutta. Used to have it before.

I tend to disagree..matter of fact..Wen i play on European servers, i get better latency as compared to Asian servers....

Routing and location.

I get better results on pingtest.net when I choose a server in Iraq vis-á-vis a server in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

I get 65 ms pings for Singapore servers. When I had 1mbps on same ISP, I got 100+ pings. After upgrade to 4mbps, I got 60-65. My ISP is Reliance.

Interesting, did they change any hardware for the same?

You need to move onto a decent ISP. 280 MS locally would make me stab people daily. Get a 1.5 - 3 mbps connection while you're at it, wouldn't hurt to get better download speeds on games as well, considering we're looking at more cheaper digital downloads in the coming years.
