Sony is expecting to post a whopping $1.1 billion loss for the fiscal year ending on March 31st, which is over 3x the amount Nintendo reported earlier last month ($336). Alongside the loss, Sony plans to cut a total of 5,000 jobs to compensate for the losses. The main causes for this loss is Sony’s TV and PC division, which have created huge holes in the company’s pockets. “Sony’s share of global TV revenue fell to 7.5 percent in the third quarter last year from 8.1 percent the previous quarter, according to NPD DisplaySearch. Sony ranked third, trailing Samsung and LG.” “There’s no prospect of its TV business being profitable,” said Makoto Kikuchi, the Tokyo-based chief executive officer for Myojo Asset Management Co. “Sony’s strengths are content such as games and movies. It cannot increase profit without moving its focus from TV production to content.” Sony plans to sell its PC business and separate its TV division into an individual unit after reporting that the division will lose money for the 10th year in a row. Sony is definitely in peril right now, it’s no doubt. I just hope that none of these problems will negatively affect their gaming side of things. Let us know what you think down below. SOURCE Well don't you guys think it was BOUND TO HAPPEN ? Why do you guys think this is happening ? From what I can think of - Samsung LCDs and LEDs are significantly cheaper than Sony's with overall same video quality, motion flow, etc. Same can be said about their Vaio laptops. Invest that same kinda money in other brand laptops like Dell, Lenovo, etc., and you get a better configuration laptop. Let me ask you, If you had to buy a TV/Laptop, what would you do with your hard earned money ? Buy a Sony TV/laptop JUST for the brand name ? Do you think it is justifiable ? Previously, I used to always say to people "If you wanna buy an LCD/LED, get a Sony...PERIOD" but now when I compare local prices and picture quality of Sony and Samsung TVs, side by side, I just can't say the same anymore. Sony has been duping customers with their overpriced gadgets for quite a while now. Their Laptops, TVs, Cameras aren't worth the price at all. Their audio products are sh*t. Seriously when I see people buying their headphones for gaming or music purpose I die inside a little. Their home theaters are crap. But people still buy them because of the brand name. Companies like this need to die ASAP. Stick to gaming ( oh wait overpriced VITA crap there too lol) or stop building shitty and overpriced products. You seriously need your head checked if you think the SONY IEM's are not up-to scratch. Smartphones is where all the money is .. first they are cheaper to produce than laptops and bring in high amount of profits ( flagship phones) .. PC sales are dying .. people are becoming dependent on smartphones now.. also remember that sony doesn't make any money on Ps4 Hardware .. so even if they sell 20 million ps4 they won't be making profit until next year,.. PS3 hardware makes them money but the sales have fallen drastically now this means that soon there will be a good price cut coming which will improve the sales of PS3.. anybody who thinks sony is going to go bankrupt or dying is wrong here.. if it was about to happen they would have sold their TV business in the first place than PC business.. And seriously, there is nothing that can compete with their offerings (at price) by established brands like Sennheiser, Skull Candy, Klipsch, Bose. There are plenty of other areas where SONY is adapting itself. Smart-phones is the biggest example as someone mentioned, they are priced well here and competitively abroad. Saying that job-cuts equates to a company is about to crash is pure bunk. Biggest example of the top of my mind, ENRON and Satyam, both companies posted revenue increase year-after-year and then abruptly upended themselves into the ground. Too many products/services always lead to lack of innovation. The only way to survive this situation by selling off lose making divisions and make each division a separate entity. At present SCEA is the most promising division and PC unit is the worst one.
