From Michael Hoge:

Mattias Filler drew my attention to this thread. There are probably more of them so here's a short statement for the curious:
1 First I was not involved in the development of Risen 3
2 I have locked myself in fact for two years to work on a new concept, but not to Gothic. A prototype for this concept is implemented with a small core team since the beginning of the month.
3 Before you ask, I can not have any info to give out. First, we want to be conscious enough time with everything and secondly is not the right place for it.
Please understand that I want to reveal anything about the new project. Those who are interested in it, do not have to wait much longer to Learn

Well I've put in a few more hours into the game. It still has it's fair share of problems, and big ones at that, but it's not as bad as the first impression it leaves. The world building in the game is really well done. Better than most open world games you find nowadays. It's really fun to explore every corner of the map and you always find something interesting down every path. The combat is hard but that is a series staple at this point. I know this is an utterly overused trope at this point, but there are some similarities between the combat of this game and a certain other game that everyone loves. You need to respect your enemies and have patience in fights. If you don't dodge and parry attacks frequently, they will stunlock you and *beep* you up. If the game follows the pattern of the last few games by this developer, this will not last. You will get extremely powerful and you will end up one shotting enemies by the end.

Still, the game has it's share of crippling issues. The dialog and voice acting is cheesy as hell. It's actually painful to have to listen to most of the conversations. And the quest design is just so bloody simple. There's no complexity or thought required. Everything is an objective that gives xp. I sailed to an island and had to go to the main town from the harbor. Walking from the harbor to the town which was inland completed 4 quests

The game also has a distinct lack of polish. Call it the eurojank effect.

So yea, so far my original recommendation stands. $10-15 game at best. But it's not hopelessly bad or anything. It's a one of a kind pirate/magic/ghosts themed RPG... depends on whether you can derive enjoyment from a 6/10 game. If you need 9/10 or higher games then avoid this.
