Nope, no name in voter list. Apparently having a passport, driving license, sailing license, pan card, voter card and ration card isn't enough to qualify you as citizen of India. If you're not in The List you're disqualified.

Yeah, it's weird. My name was in the voters list but not on the list at the polling station and so they said I couldn't vote. Had all the same documents. I made them go through the entire list and look for my name and they couldn't find it. So I went home, downloaded the voters list PDF, took a printout of the page with my name, and took it to the polling station. Then they magically found my name on their list.

Then they tell me, "good thing you got this printout, otherwise you wouldn't have been able to vote". Purely due to their own incompetence. If only they equipped each polling station with one laptop. My name was a simple Ctrl F away.

I have voted every single time since I turned 18. but I totally understand the poor voter turnout in Mumbai. This city contributes so much to the country's economy and doesn't get anything back from the central government. No security, no infrastructure, no housing. While all the time, people from all over the country are migrating here and putting a strain on whatever resources we do have.

So how about voting, and having a say in the government, rather than being mute, and allowing the rest of the nation decide which govt rules over mumbai?

Yeah, and thankfully this year there were very little prachar rallies and hoardings and what not, there's practically none where I live. Kejri did that drama for a day and people were furious, told him to back home and leave us alone lol. Its like people are used to the miserable everyday routine now and don't wanna be part of this circus happening somewhere far north in a distant land :P

A.) that's not Mumbai resources

B.) that's country resources

C.) It was made economic Capital cos the country collectively chose to,not on it's own

D.) Similar situation is in Delhi but that's no reason for a no show

E.) I don't want development in Delhi but I want other areas developed aswell so that ppl don't migrate & cause economic & civil chaos in these metros

F.) For that I need to vote every time I can

A & B - Resources aren't always natural resources. The public transport system is a resource too. And since you're obviously referring to natural resources, those are the nation's resources but states get their allocations. When Delhi had power shortage, the Maharashtra govt generously (and ludicrously) offered Delhi some of its own. And when Maharashtra got a reduction in power tariffs this year, Mumbai was excluded.

C - If you're going to make a city the country's economic capital, thereby making it the most expensive city in the country to live in, that has to also come with all the benefits that come with being the economic capital, which I'm finding hard to see.

D - There is no similar situation in Delhi. Mumbai is not a union territory. Mumbai doesn't get a budget allocation of its own, but Maharashtra does, and Mumbai doesn't get its fair share from it. And that's been the case regardless of whether UPA or NDA was in power. Why work hard trying to get votes from educated people in Mumbai, when you can just pander to the much bigger vote bank in the poor, uneducated parts of this big state.

E - Yeah, well, development isn't happening anywhere else. All we're seeing is satellite cities being created on the outskirts of Mumbai, which just means that Mumbai gets bigger and the strain on resources gets even more serious.

Bengal has to bear million of bangaldeshi too.

They've made their way to Mumbai too, so I can only imagine how bad it is there.

I have been saying this for a while but people never understand this.

Mumbai will have to use measures to control influx of migrants and manage its resources well.

So according to you Rajisthan is showing generosity by providing Delhi it's power?!

No, I'm saying that if the Maharashtra state govt had so much power to hand out, it could have used that abundance of supply to lower tariffs here rather than to hand out favours to another UPA state.

I completely disagree with this view. Illegal immigration should be banned but there are various Bangladeshis who have come here legally and are working and there is nothing wrong with that. India is a much better country for opportunities when compared to Bangaldesh and thus they have the right to come here and look for work as the Government is sanctioning the visas. Just because they are Bangladeshis doesn't mean that we are 'bearing' them. They add to the workforce here and we are not doing any charity by bringing them in.

Only issue is the illegal immigration of Bangladeshis mostly in Assam region and also in West Bengal but relatively less.

Also, not surprised that WB has got 80%+ voter turnout. The people here are very proactive in following news and have strong opinions. The voting for my area in Kolkata is on May 12th.

You control migration at the source. If the central and the state governments are adept, and Bihar progressed, then Biharis wouldn't need to come to Bombay.

So, vote for a good government, and hope that the influx reduces. By not voting, what have you achieved?

I think this was one of the issues in Sena/BJP agenda that the local Cong gov is too mellow to ask any help and packages to the center for Mumbai. Many of them have their own ambitions to be in Delhi someday and don't want a beef with madam and her son. If madam says no that's the final word.

This is actually a funny situation. The problem here is not with Biharis but with the labourers who come from there and are very in-disciplined. The issue is development of Bihar and the neighbouring states but the Centre can't be solely blamed for this. Bihar has been looted a lot by former CMs and now this current CM is doing a job in repairing those years of problems. I agree that Mumbai has strain of people all over India but it's a price you pay for being the country's leading city; just like the price paid by US for being the global leader.

I believe the Mumbaikars believe that there is no point voting for either Government as they anyway would not allocate much funds to the city. However, at the same time the politicians would wonder why bother about allocating funds to Mumbai when they are not even interested in voting. Hence, this viewpoint of not bothering to vote is hampering Mumbaikars and only Mumbaikars.

You ask, "What is the Government going to do for Mumbai anyway?" The Government will reply, " Why should we when you guys can't even bother to vote?"

I could be wrong, but somehow I doubt the Bangladeshi's who live under flyovers and beg for money at traffic signals in Mumbai have come here legally.

Yeah, not voting isn't the answer, but there's a general feeling of helplessness and cynicism in the city. I don't agree with the people who don't vote, but I understand the sentiment.

So basically you're endorsing vote bank politics? Government should spend money on the people who vote for them?

& the only way to do that is Infrastructure in rest of India to control migration

Not by Boycotting governence & constitution

MH govt isn't strong to do that. In fact certain elements actually want people from UP-Bihar for their petty vote bank politics.

SP and BSP, especially SP has found their base in MH, do you think the locals are supporting them? no, the migrants residing in Kurla vote for them.

Now Bihar is not a well to do state, but since it has almost the special status it gets bigger chunk from Central, all this are being pocketed by politicians there and there is no growth in ages and I dont believe there would be.

I don't blame mumbai for apathy, there problems won't be resolved no matter which party comes in power, UPA will keep wanking, if MNS/NDA run the state, RajT will be targeted again for anti-northies stance.

Need of hour is,

1. Throw all illegal Bangladeshi immigrants

2. Control influx of migrants for next 5 yrs

3. Improve infra of the city and in BalT's own words save it from turning into a toilet

For the people who might find it difficult to locate their name in the voting list at poll station. Keep a record of your serial number in the voting list, the serial number would be displayed online or from the 'party chit' that most people get before elections. If you are not able to find your name, then quote the serial number or take the booklet in your own hand and check for yourself before heading inside the polling booth.

Dude, this is clearly not what I meant. Let's talk about cognitive thinking here. If the Government (e.g. Congress) sees that Mumbai voted mostly for BJP, then they would make an effort to change that perception. Similarly, if Mumbai always votes for Congress, then INC would work to solidify this perception.

However, if there are no votes then the Government would honestly not put in an extra effort. There is a thing in 'Transactional Analysis'- Psychology called 'strokes' (in simple terms: feedback). Giving out a negative stroke is better than not giving a stroke at all. If you vote for the opposition, you are stating that you are not liking the current work and hence force the current party to put in an extra effort.

A very simplified example, Person A and Person B are your employees, Person A is supposed to give you a glass of water everyday but never does. Hence you ask Person B to give you that glass and inform him that you are asking him this because Person A is not doing his job. This would in turn lead to a reaction. The current viewpoint of Mumbaikars is that I will fire both my employees without even telling them why.

So basically you are endorsing segregation politics, stopping migrants from moving freely in their own country so that locals of a particular place feel good and then vote for the party that took that measure.

See how statements can be twisted ?

btw what is your stance on restriction on movement with in a Country ? yes or no ?

No explanations, just yes or no.

Sorry if you're asking just HPS, but my view is No restrictions.

If you are good enough, you needn't bother about migrants.

On similar lines I don't want reservations for SC/ST etc. Give them a good state sponsored education, and then it's upto them to get a job.

well yes, that. and more than this, it is to do with the Union to which that particular federal unit (hell mumbai aint a federal unit specifically to speak of) is a part of, and the rules and bindings that are there.

then there are basic capitalist principles in play, demand of menial work is supplied by willing workers. the asinine thought of restricting movements with in a country is SO beyond ridiculous that it seems the persons propagating it havent ever picked up the copy of constitution or at the very lest understood the idea behind it.
