Facebook to buy Oculus Rift for $2 Billion

Recommended Posts

@slacker... Yeah. I agree about his replies, but problem is, we really don't know how Oculus might turn out after a few years. So, whatever he says might be his honest opinion or just plain PR speak and we won't know the difference.

That Notch analogy

Anyway, CliffyB's response is just nonsense to justify the acquisition. Everything that he points out in that post can/might happen even without this acquisition happening. It's not like Facebook all of a sudden made these things a possibility.

I'd rather actually go to E3.

+1 respect.

How is virtual tourism not a good idea? :/

aaargh !! :wallbash: Cause it just is not. You dont just use eyes when you travel, you have to soak in the culture, the people (conversing with total strangers and having a great time), the feel of the place, the history infused in the walls- from the mightiest castle to the dingiest inn.

Virtual tourism could actually be pretty big considering how popular those travel guide programs are on TV.

'supp CC ! long time brohiem. Btw does your exhaustion from travel (how can anyone have that is beyond someone with immense wanderlust like I do) have to do anything with it ? :P

As for the news that enshrines this thread, am with sam in the idea that it won't be totally bad. Something good will surely come out of it, just that people can kiss- it being used for non casual games- a solid good bye.

It might not give you an experience even close to the real thing, but it might have its applications. If it's way cheaper than actually traveling, maybe you could visit your father's native village in another country without having to physically go there. Maybe you can visit a place and scout it out before you actually travel there? Maybe there are cleverer things you can do with something like 'virtual tourism' than you and I can imagine. I think it's silly to say that it's a bad idea when we don't even know how it'll work and what experiences we might get from it.

Virtual tourism need not only do travel guides to real world places. They can do virtual models of places in past, space - kind of like planetoriams. I think it has a Very good potential over there, more so than gaming.

I guess VR sets might endup like motion controlers last gen.. :fear: just my opinion.

I am pretty sure Virtual tourism would be for these who can't afford to go to certain places to soak in the culture, the people (conversing with total strangers and having a great time), the feel of the place, the history infused in the walls- from the mightiest castle to the dingiest inn. Obviously, going to a particular is always going to be better but that is not the point. Virtual Tourism won't be an alternative for going to a particular place for a vacation. But it can be used by those who can't actually ever afford to go abroad in their lifetime or for that matter there is some there reason that they can't go to a place physically.

For scouting, sure. Even for stuff like a Planetarium, with aims to study and gain knowledge of sapce; cause what can one really do in actual outer space..

but for actual tourism ? "hell to the no" brother.
