It was pretty obvious from the live timing data that Lewis had backed off about 5 laps from the end for a couple of laps and then went faster for a lap and a half before backing off again. It is a proven technique when following in the wake of the car ahead to back off to allow your front tires to settle a little in order to even out the temperatures across the surface of the tires and get them closer to optimum. Taking the live timing data and the news on Lewis' call to the pits 4 laps from the end, it seems like he was attempting a bluff, something, anything, however half-hearted it might have been, in order to get closer in that brief attack spell for a lap and a half.
