WhiteWolf
Digital Foundry: Hands-on with Halo: The Master Chief Collection http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-11-02-digital-foundry-hands-on-with-halo-the-master-chief-collection [60fps] Halo 4 Xbox One Master Chief Collection 'Infinity' Frame-Rate Test [60fps] Halo 3 Xbox One Master Chief Collection 'Sierra 117' Frame-Rate Test Halo 1 Xbox One Master Chief Collection 'The Silent Cartographer' Frame-Rate Test Based on a playthrough of the iconic Silent Cartographer stage, Saber's Xbox 360 artwork scales up nicely and comfortably into the full HD resolution, but the move to 60fps causes hiccups on two different fronts: internal simulation tick-rates for certain elements are hard-set by the original engine to a 30Hz refresh, producing scenes with some components - such as vehicles in the opening cut-scene, for instance - updating at a different rate to the renderer, resulting in obvious judder. At other points, it's clear the engine itself can't sustain 60fps, introducing stutter of a different kind. Other elements of the scene - such as the obvious shadow cascade that sees some very noticeable pop-in - also remain unchanged from the Xbox 360 version. Look beyond the issues though, and what's fascinating is just how well the basics hold up even in the modern era. Halo: Combat Evolved may lack the refinements found in each subsequent sequel, but the gameplay here is still golden - Bungie got the fundamentals so right, and despite some of the rendering glitches, 60fps works here, elevating the experience. Big Boss
lol not even 60 fps, and not full HD. Why the hell are they running 2 engines together? How many will toggle between 2 engines regularly? Useless feature which affects both fps and resolution. Without that, all games should have run at native 1080p60fps. At least give a toggle to switch off other engine which will make game run at 1080p60fps. Edit: DF agrees: The only tangible compromise in the new Halo 2 concerns resolution - Saber settles on a 1328x1080 framebuffer, which produces rather interesting results. Upscaling artefacts are limited to the horizontal axis only, and the upscaling filter to make up the difference is pretty good. Since supporting the classic 'insta-switch' is apparently a key component in the resolution reduction, we would still have preferred this to have been an optional mode - with removing it restoring full 1080p Edited November 2, 2014 by Big Boss
WhiteWolf
lol not even 60 fps, and not full HD. Halo 1(Anniversary), 3 and 4 are full HD Halo 2 Remastered version runs at sub-1080p resolution According to DF- Halo 1 engine is struggling to maintain 60fps coz it was designed to run at 30fps... Halo 1 played in both classic and remastered views. It's interesting to note that elements of the core engine are hard-wired to run at 30fps, so even when the engine is rendering at 1080p60, judder can manifest. At other points, it's clear the engine itself can't sustain 60fps, introducing stutter of a different kind. Other elements of the scene - such as the obvious shadow cascade that sees some very noticeable pop-in - also remain unchanged from the Xbox 360 version. TRMNTR
I love the nostalgic feeling of switching between the 2 engines but wouldn't mind an option to run just the H2A engine at 1080p. Having said that, I understand that this is easier said than done. Maintaining two different resolutions might be double the work.
