Xbox One Exclusive Scalebound’s Dragons Explained; Platinum Discusses Relationship with Microsoft

One of the most mysterious games currently in development is Platinum Games’ Xbox One Exclusive Scalebound, which i still being kept closely under wraps even during Tokyo Game Show.

Director Hideki Kamiya and Producer Atsushi Inaba talked a bit about the basic concepts behind the game and about the relationship with Microsoft in an interview on the Japanese site Game Watch.

Kamiya-san explained that the initial concept was to make a game in which powerful and huge monsters do battle on each other, and that’s still the most important pillar. He feels that there are several elements now. It’s made for those that want battles between monsters wielding great power, for gamers that like fantasy settings, and for those that like dragons.

Since Kamiya-san loves dragons, he wanted to make a game in which they played a major role. Scalebound fulfills that wish, and he wants it to be a game that fans of dragons can enjoy.

He also explained that he wants to represent the bonds between a mighty creature like a dragon and a small human, not only through the gameplay, but also through the story, as that relationship deepens.

He could not answer on how the two will communicate, as it’s related to the game’s mechanics which aren’t ready to be disclosed, but he doesn’t want to represent dragons like a tool or a pet to attack, but like an actual life form.

Inaba-san also explained that Unreal Engine 4 was chosen to create the game since it’s on a new hardware, so there’s an huge amount of new elements to tackle. That’s why they decided to go with UE4.

Kamiya-san also mentioned that it’s exciting and fun to the Xbox One, and it’s always like that when working on new hardware. He feels right at home because it’s not the first time that Platinum works on new hardware, and they’re experienced in the process.

Inaba-san on the other hand is impressed with the level of support received from a high level partner like Microsoft. That partnership is the most exciting thing for him, and working with Microsoft studio is a really stimulating experience.

There is an article about Scalebound at Eurogamer, some interesting quotes:

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/20...as-done-before

Perhaps the most revealing is that this will be a different type of game for Platinum Games, a step or two removed from the slick, fast-paced and hard-edged action of Bayonetta, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance and The Wonderful 101. "The main characteristics of the games I've put out require reflexes, intuitiveness," says Kamiya. "It might seem like they're more for advanced and skilled players. How does that change if we've got these gigantic beasts and monsters. It's not really that plus the monsters - that's not how I'm looking at it.

"To be exact, this idea, this game concept was not created for the Xbox One," said Inaba. "It's a concept we've been working on for a very long time. It's something Microsoft believed in, and saw the vision that Hideki Kamiya brought to this concept as a director. They saw promise, and they believed in the product, so there was commitment - and they were committed to make that investment in this creation. To us, with that agreement is that we want to support the hardware with the best content possible."

"As the director of the game, I want to add one thing," said Kamiya. "This concept has been with me even before Bayonetta, even before we started working on that game. It's really from the early days of Platinum Games. Fast forward to today, if you think of the various market conditions, where the industry is headed and what's trending, to be able to have this opportunity, to work on an original IP exclusive to one platform, it's a very rare and precious opportunity. For me, as a game director that's focussed on making this game happen, I look at it as a great opportunity and a challenge. I really want to make sure I deliver to people's expectations."

Not a game like DMC, just like I thought B)

While Microsoft and PlatinumGames have remained tight-lipped regarding Scalebound, Microsoft Studios' Ken Lobb has shed some light on what can be expected from the upcoming Xbox One exclusive.

"When people really understand what we're building, they're gonna be shocked," Lobb said during an interview on The Inner Circle Podcast. Scalebound will be a major AAA title, according to Lobb, and as he put it, has the potential to be "Game of All-Time."

Lobb was unable to speak on exactly what kind of game Scalebound is, but he did offer up a few hints. "What does Platinum do well? That's what they're building. And what do we (Microsoft Studios) do well? That's what we're adding. And yes, these are dragon companions."

Lobb added that Scalebound's name is somewhat intentional. "Scale: they (PlatinumGames) build crazy, gigantic things."

When asked if Scalebound shares similarities with Monster Hunter, Lobb dismissed the suggestion, calling the Capcom series "weird and grindy."

Speaking on how the two studios began working together, Lobb said he met PlatinumGames' Hideki Kamiya two years ago at E3. And later that year, Kamiya formally pitched Scalebound to Microsoft at TGS.

So, when will we finally see Scalebound in action? Lobb says we'll be getting our first look later this year. He even teased, "I walk down the hall and I play a lot."

Seems like MSFT pissed Kamiya off regarding the presentation of Scalebound at GCOM. He nuked them into orbit on twitter, as usual.

"MSのクソどもはよー…俺をナメてんのか…?" - Rough translation from GAF "Those shits at MS... are they f**king with me ?" (doesn't necessarily mean that entirely)

^ Deleted this tweet a while ago for obvious reasons.

Probably because of stagetime. Hope it isn't something big that'll affect the IP in the longrun, pretty long into development now.

Kamiya  Kamiya is crazy Japanese version of David Jaffe :P

Holy crap

I really don't think third parties are pleased with M$ about something

Revealing PS4 version of TR at a strategically abrupt time & now this

Insomniac also refused to reveal the sales data on Sunset Overdrive for some reason

Scalebound IP is owned by MS unlike Sunset and TR...

Scalebound.jpg

It's a first party exclusive developed by a 3rd party developer.
