I noticed a few fps drops(maybe it was the youtube player) which is obviously not good.Anyway, it has enough time to shine.

Video clearly says Pre-Alpha footage..

Watched the gameplay reveal this morning. It reminds me of that DMC reboot, and that weird Dante.Game surely has potential but the demo was probably rushed.

They showed it coz they had to show something new to Gamescom audience...

More details -

“Scalebound is Platinum’s first action RPG,” says Scalebound’s Creative Producer Jean Paul Pierre Kellams, “so we’re making a game that brings all of our core competencies in action gameplay to the RPG genre and placing it in a very large non-linear world.”

The spice Platinum is adding to this formula to make it truly unique is Thuban, a “dragon who is bonded to you,” and who behaves as an independent creature alongside Drew, rather than a strictly responsive vessel for your button prompts.

Still a strong, majestic beast, then, but one that fits a young Kamiya’s vision of what a dragon could be. “There’s a level of intelligence to dragons to the point where they’re almost godlike,” he says.

We’re first introduced to Thuban in a combat-heavy Scalebound pre-alpha demo. The massive beast, banded with fluorescent blue, soars through the air with a whooping Drew clinging to his back. They land in front of a clutch of startled soldiers with a graceless thunk, and Drew goes tumbling. “Use your words!” yells Drew at the snickering dragon.

With headphones slung around his neck and an outfit that wouldn’t look out of place in modern day Tokyo, pretty-boy Drew stands out like a sore thumb in the enormous, fantastical world Platinum is calling ‘Draconis.’

“I didn’t want it to be this typical, expected fantasy world,” says Kamiya, “so to put a twist to that, this human, Drew, comes from our modern world, which would allow us to tell a story that has maybe not been told before, but yet is still believable.”

The bond between the pair is, from every angle, the beating heart of Scalebound. They share the same life stream (if Thuban dies, Drew dies), and a soft, blue string that floats gently between them, while Drew possesses a scaly arm - of mysterious origin, for now - the colour of Thuban’s skin. And while the relationship between them informs the central story, it’s also used as the basis for multiple play mechanics. As you grow to understand your dragon, more complex interactions with him - across both land traversal and combat - will open up to you.

“You will eventually be able to ride Thuban,” explains Kamiya, “but maybe in the beginning, in the earlier stages, your understanding of each other is not enough to allow Drew to ride him.”

As the story progresses, joint attacks will also open up, or in-game actions with a little more meaning: Thuban might have more of an interest in saving a flailing Drew as he topples off a cliff, for example, or be more inclined to lend him a helping tail to reach a high ledge.

“Throughout that progression you’ll be able to definitely see how the characters play off of each other, and how things that you weren’t able to do earlier on might be something you can do later on.

The human element wasn’t always a part of Kamiya’s original vision, which he describes as “just these giant, beautiful creatures fighting each other.” But he eventually realised that the concept still wasn’t quite right if he wanted to feel a kinship with the dragon.

“What happens to me if the outcome of this battle that I’m seeing goes in this direction or that direction? What happens if the dragon ends up dying? How does that affect me? So slowly but surely I started thinking: what is my role? How do I participate?”

In combat, the dance between Drew, a very mortal human, and Thuban, an enormous fire-breathing dragon, needs to be delicately choreographed. How do you work with your dragon? Is he going to be aggressive

while you take a step back and wait for an opening? Or will you be more proactive while he takes the brunt of the damage?

Platinum is putting a great deal of stock into Thuban’s actions in battle as an independent character. As we watched the pair fight a giant praying mantis, Platinum onlookers murmured “I’ve never seen him do that before.” (To me, a newcomer, such intricacies were a little wasted, but their enthusiasm was delightful .)

“Even though Drew can give orders to Thuban, the dragon can act independently,” says Kamiya. “You don’t always know exactly what the outcome of his actions will be. You can say ‘go there’ but you can’t always predict what is going to happen - you have to make your own assumptions. And I think that’s a big part of what makes fighting in this game fun.”

No one will buy the console for this game, thats y it will release alongside gears 4 and forza horizon 3,same way its for tomb raider this year.

You have to give a proper package to attract, which they will have next year as well.

That isn't how system sellers work , System sellers are supposed to be of different genres to appeal to different audiences to bring in.

Forza is a system seller because it brings in racing fans.

Games like Halo,Gears still appeal to same audience.

If this delivers it will bring in a brand new audience for Xbox , mostly people who stick to PS.

Watched the gameplay reveal this morning. It reminds me of that DMC reboot, and that weird Dante.Game surely has potential but the demo was probably rushed. The walk animations were weird and combat was kinda slow and sluggish.I noticed a few fps drops(maybe it was the youtube player) which is obviously not good.Anyway, it has enough time to shine.

Don't think it's YT, the build clearly had drops. Would be super-weird to play anything these guys dish out, under 60 frames a second. Hopefully they don't settle for a 30 citing the world being huge and the game being an ARPG. Won't mind downgrades too. And yeah, for a world as huge as this they need sprint for ground traversal. For combat, well they've got a long way to go but don't expect anything drastic as it's running on UE4 and not their proprietary middleware. They'd obviously work on the polish but highly doubt the pace would change. It's a design decision. Kamiya's been saying that melee combat won't have the same depth as we'd expect from a P+ game or a Kamiya game even.

4P co-op, the pulse (life source), ARPG, weapon/shield swaps, player/dragon customization (builds?) and the next major thing left is invasions. Looks like they're going for a Souls model. Those are BIG shoes to fill, this will inevitably be compared Bloodborne lol

It's 30fps only i think.. It's different from past Platinum games.. People are saying it's more like DragonDogma/Dark Souls than Bayonetta or DMC.

60 fps .. don't think so. I have my concerns about the fact that even consistent 30 fps will be possible or not at current visual fidelity

It's releasing next fall...They have lot of time to fix all frame-rate issues..

Video mein itna mota mota pre-alpha gameplay dikha nahi kya :P

That is good, but the trailer the gameplay started as if it's going to be a hardcore HnS :P.There's still much time so i hope it turns out to be good.

On the other side,is there any news regarding DMC 5?

Nah , TGS most probably .

^ What the man said. To an extent, that everyone will be surprised if DMC5 and Biohazard 7 don't get announced at TGS, after all the trademarks getting renewed by Capcom and the clues being dropped everywhere.

Scalebound looks like the most interesting big-budget Japanese RPG in a while

Scalebound's narrative is the story of a man and his dragon - the man, Drew, is a regular guy from our modern world who somehow is dragged from his home land and flung into a fantasy world - thus the contemporary clothes and Beats-style headphones. Events transpire and Drew ends up directly connected to Thuban, a hulking beast of a dragon who is 'bonded' to Drew - their fates are now intrinsically linked.

"The story is really focused on building a relationship with Thuban," Kamiya notes. "They are sharing their life force. In order to survive in the world of Draconis, they have to work together and look after each other."

While the basic beats of Scalebound's combat look and feel like Platinum's polished action games, it's in Thuban and other small touches that the RPG begins to shine through. An AI companion, Thuban more or less does what he wants but will react to you within the right conditions. At one point, the Platinum staffer controlling the demo picks up a giant mine and tosses it onto a massive beast that Thuban and Drew are battling. When the mine stuns the beast, Thuban takes the opportunity to strike with a slower, more powerful attack.

Kamiya describes Thuban as a "very independent" character whose personality shows in his AI. We were told that throughout the week of repetitive Gamescom press demos, Thuban has repeatedly surprised the Platinum staff by doing wildly unexpected but often helpful things in battle that they hadn't witnessed before.

While as a character he'll act on his own and do as he wishes, there are simple commands one can give such as to attack a specific target or hold back, helping to avoid any frustration for the player.

Crucially, Thuban and Drew's narrative link also plays into gameplay - the pair share life energy, represented in Scalebound as an energy called 'Pulse'. "If Thuban is downed, Drew will also eventually be downed. If Drew dies, Thuban will eventually die," Kamiya notes. There's what's described as a "grace period" when Thuban is downed where Drew can revive him - but the hulking dragon isn't able to return that favor.

"If you know that you're about to die - as Drew - then you can command Thuban to save or protect you," Kamiya suggests. "That's a command you could pull out so that you can survive that battle."

Given his size, Thuban of course does a lot of the damage to many enemies - which interestingly pushes the player into a support-style role. During the demo we see Drew scan enemies for information and weaknesses, use Pulse Energy to attack from range, and even heal Thuban when needed.
