Xbox One exclusive

The game was developed by Microsoft Game Studios under the direction of Panzer Dragon and Crimson Dragon director Yukio Futatsugi.

Microsoft has announced it's reviving classic Xbox title Phantom Dust as an Xbox One exclusive.

The reveal was made during the company's E3 press conference today, though details were thin on the ground. No release window was highlighted, but Microsoft described the project as "a reimagined version of the beloved classic with all-new gameplay and graphics."

Originally released on the first Xbox back in 2005, Phantom Dust was a pretty unique offering that blended together cards, action and strategy to earn its position as a cult hit. We have no knowledge if gameplay will be the same this time around, but hopefully we'll have more information as the show progresses.

Studio Behind Phantom Dust Reboot Shuts Down

Independent development studio Darkside Games, which was working on the planned reboot of the cult classic Phantom Dust, shut down this afternoon in the wake of news that Microsoft had cancelled their version of the game, Kotaku has learned. Around 50 people lost their jobs, according to sources at the studio.

Darkside, a small independent studio in Florida that has mostly done contract work on games like Borderlands and Sunset Overdrive, had been helming Phantom Dust as its first solo project, we've learned today. But when the studio's heads today heard that Microsoft had axed their game, they were forced to let everyone go, according to two people who worked there. The studio employed around 50 people.

"The executives who saw it were impressed and as late as this morning gave our team every indication that the project was on solid ground," said one of those people, who requested anonymity while speaking with Kotaku because they were not authorized to speak publicly on the situation. "Yet we got the phone call today that someone up on high who in all likelihood wasn't even aware of the game in detail shut it down."

So, the game is canceled ?

Not a surprise. This game was not gonna work, anyways.

^ Though this guy is known to blatantly lie to the consumers, I don't think this would be one of them. Also, if you guys don't know about the game, it was a very niche title that got lost among some big names during it's release. If my vague memory is right I've hardly played around bunch of matches so can't really talk deeply about the online multiplayer (also had connectivity issues but that was due to the pathetic VSNL line I had back then) but the single player was pretty good during it's time. The base design is like a projectile based action game with a choose mission structure. Can't believe it's close to 10 years now...

Game is alive guys. Ken Lobb recently talked about it in a podcast interview. MS has been very secretive about the devs behind this game and my guess is that they had multiple teams working on it.

Mind explaining why? Obviously I'm assuming you've played the original game and know everything about this reboot to make such a silly statement.

I didn't say that the game would be bad. What i meant was that considering how niche the first game was, sequel is not gonna sell if it is on the same lines. People rarely buy such games.

P.S : You should be the last person to call someone out for commenting on a game that he has not played.

First of all, it's a REBOOT not a sequel. Big difference.

Secondly, if you had seen/read any of the interview of Ken Lobb regarding this game, you'll know that they are well aware of the things that made the original so inaccessible to players (Apart from the limited release and it being literally sent out to die by MS). Lobb talked about how they want to make sure none of that happens again and that they had found the perfect team to make it (Not sure if this was the same studio)

Lastly, this isn't a typical AAA game with mega-million budget and it'll have a pricing structure like KI so I don't know what sales you are worried about. And you really think MS wasn't aware of the fact that the original game was incredibly niche and sold like 20 copies before greenlighting this reboot?? Let's wait for the release of the game before deciding whether people will buy it or not.

So yeah, please tell me more about what you see in that crystal ball of yours.

I don't need to wait for the game to release to express my opinion regarding its sales. I may be wrong, though. Lets see..

Its pretty ironic to see you getting so butthurt about someone making a comment about a ms exclusive considering how much trolling you have done/do in other game threads yourself. I wasn't even trolling..
