Sony CEO Apologizes as PS4 Maker Restructures for Growth

Recommended Posts

Chief Executive Officer Kazuo Hirai apologized to investors after the company forecast a sixth loss in seven years, and he pledged that his restructuring efforts would fuel the electronics maker’s long-term growth.

Sony has lost 85 billion yen ($831 million) since Hirai became CEO in 2012 and predicts another 50 billion-yen loss this year as he struggles to revive the television business. The 53-year-old is counting on more restructuring, a slate of “Amazing Spider-Man” films, new Xperia smartphones and potential sales of the PS4 in China to revive its fortunes against Apple Inc. (AAPL) and Samsung Electronics Co.

Hirai was promoted in April 2012, taking the helm of a company that had lost money at its iconic TV unit since 2004. He failed to deliver on promises to turn the unit profitable, and the business now has lost more than 790 billion yen in the past 10 years, according to the company.

PS4 Leads

There are some positives for Hirai as Sony extends its lead in video games and the film unit rebounds.

The PS4 beat Microsoft Corp. (MSFT)’s Xbox One in U.S. console sales in May, extending its lead for a fifth month, according to Port Washington, New York-based NPD Group Inc. Sony last month took steps toward selling consoles in China, agreeing to form two ventures after the government lifted a 2000 ban on sales of the machines.

IIRC at one point Sony's net worth on the stock market had dropped below $25 billion. Apple at the time had more than $100 billion+ in cash...wonder what would have happened if Apple had decided to buy Sony.

Then ps4 would would have been launched at the price of ps3 with the tech of wii u.

If anything, PS4 is the console with the more secure future. SCE is one of the very few profit making divisions for Sony and the PS4 is a big part of it. It makes sense for them to invest more in it while trying to cut there losses elsewhere.

It's kinda the exact opposite for Microsoft. Their entertainment division has historically been a money bleeder. They had started making money on the 360 in the last few years but I think the whole Xbone fiasco would certainly not have helped. The rumors we keep hearing about MS selling off the xbox brand aren't that preposterous. Most of the money comes from Windows, Office and now the cloud services, none of which have any strong synergies with Xbox.

So there.

Just so you know....

And XBox has a lot to do with Windows, beyond just having brand recognition as the company's entertainment brand.

I'm not saying they're going to sell Xbox tomorrow (or ever) but it has got to have been a topic of discussion internally, which I believe will keep coming up unless there's a dramatic turn around in the division's performance. The fact that Nadella had to come out and say it kinda proves it.

There might be internal code sharing between the Windows and Xbox teams but I don't think there is any consumer facing brand synergy. Nobody buys an Xbox over a PS4 because they already own a Windows PC or buys a PC over a Mac because they own an Xbox. Also, with the smartglass app, the computing platform kinda becomes irrelevant.

This isnt about ps4 or any one division for that matter. Its about the company as a whole. And nothing but death awaits Sony. The writing has been on the wall for a while now.

Greatness awaits.

Sony is a huge a*s company with a billion products and divisions. It's not going anywhere anytime soon. It might continue to bleed money for the next 10 years and that's fine by me. All I care about is getting the most of the $400 I spent on my PS4 in the next 5 years. And everything that's been happening since the launch of these consoles (at both Microsoft and Sony) makes me very happy about my purchase.

What's happening internally is abundantly clear here. The only time any discussion came up was when one of the activist investor groups after short term profit suggested it. That led to the news media hyping it up more than it ever deserved to be.

First they hounded Gates about it, twisting his words as suited them (yay fox news :P). Nadella had to clear it up because the hounding was getting out of hand, and that was a definite full stop to the discussion. You can speculate all you want but that's the long and short of it.

By your own logic regarding Sony a company as cash rich as MS with a good stock price trend doesn't need to sell any division unless something terrible happens in the next couple years.

Yeah but the day it finally becomes irrelevant will be a glorious day indeed. One by one each of their division gets sold off/ shut down and finally they would be just remembered as the company who made awesome products like walkman some ages ago.

Waiting for that day patiently. There isn't another company on this planet which deserves to die as much as sony.

I'd reserve that hate myself for Comcast and time Warner :P

Again, not saying they have to sell it. But Xbox is not the focus anymore. Ten years ago, It was going to be their ticket into the living room. The living room battle is becoming less and less relevant by the day. It's smartphones and tablets now and by looks of it, MS seems to be very focused on the Surface strategy. Again I don't see too many synergies between surface and Xbox exclusively. They can't ignore Android and iOS when it comes to app integration with Xbox.

Whereas for a company like Sony, they really have to focus on SCE and PS4 as it's their saving grace in a disaster of a portfolio. They don't have the luxury of other profit making divisions that Microsoft has.

Not ignoring Android or ios anymore doesn't mean the focus on Windows and XBox synergies. While I don't feel comfortable talking too specifically about why I'm saying what I'm saying regarding Windows and XBox, if you search online you'll see examples of conferences where certain developments regarding this tie in approach have been teased. I'll leave it at that.

Yes, the second part of your post I don't disagree with. That has always been the case.

Sony needs to sell its useless divisions especially consumer goods. They already got rid of Vaio this year or plan to and want to focus on Mobile business.

Believe it or not Sony's core business and most profitable business is not Entertainment division or Consumer related goods but its Finance. Its one core business which has been able to make money quite well for them. They do Sony Bank services, Sony Insurance, Sony Securities etc.

Also for those who think Sony will sink need to change their opinion. Sony has over $148 billion in assets and another $27 billion in equity.
