EA boss John Riccitiello has confirmed at William Blair & Company's 28th Annual Growth Stock Conference that the next Need for Speed game will be called Need for Speed: Undercover.

Need for Speed Undercover will have a strong mission structure that Riccitiello has compared to the film, The Transporter. "For those of you who ever saw movies like The Transporter - it's sort of a cult classic among people with a B-movie mentality, which fits me perfectly. I liked it. I apologize. For those of you with no taste, and you liked it too, we can go have a Schlitz after this."

The development cycle has also been changed for Need for Speed titles, there will now be two teams working on the franchise and they will be working on a 24 month cycle. "Last summer we added head count and split the team in two, so now there are two teams on a 24 month cycle. And this is sort of their first 16-and-a-half month game...Because we didn't do it far enough ago to give us a full two year dev cycle."

There's no word on which platforms Need for Speed Undercover is in development for, but chances are it's more than one. Or eight.

Only Plus Point: good they wont torture us with a NFS game very year now.

Bad thing -- they still will sooner rather then later.

MR. John Riccitiello : NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS. Thank you for killing the series after most wanted.

Umm, there will be an NFS game every year. They've just split the load between two dev teams (each of whom will release a game every 2 years), similar to CoD4.

Was it necessary to clarify :sign_offtopic: You cant see me happy isnt it :tongue4:

I'm not going to badmouth the NFS series. A majority of the games have been really good, and hold up pretty well even today. I especially loved NFS1 and Hot Pursuit 1 and 2. NFS III so much so that I still have the game box with me. The introduction of the cops just blew replayability through the roof and the graphics were gorgeous on my Voodoo, hehe.

My point is that if they can capture and bottle whatever it is that made the old games work and drip feed it to us every year, I'd be more than happy ponying up the money.

I just realised that I still remember most of the NFSIII tracks. Thats when you know you've spent too long playing a game.

But that was my whole point; they really don't need to look outside their own gates (or electrified barbed wire fences in EA's case)! All they need to do is (re)play the older NFS games. The Hot Pursuit duo especially. I've played every NFS game EA has made except ProStreet and that MMORG they flirted with all those years ago, motor city online I think it was called. Look behind you, EA, BEHIND YOU!

^^ the problem is they try create this lifestyle that the game is supposed to portray....it worked well in undergorund so theyve been trying to reinvent that ever since with each game....they got so involved in stories that theyve forgotten that its a racing game and if the racing isnt fun, the game sucks.....i thought they had realised that when the early screenshots and interviews of prostreet surfaced....but that was a downright disaster gameplay-wise

I'm 100% in agreement with you. Right down to the NFSIII bit. Still remember roaring through Empire City in the CLK-GTR. Or the crazy knockout races at night in Lost Canyons. Personally, for me, NFS UG2 was a big draw. Graphics took a backseat for once, as gameplay was so engaging.

I played Carbon before Most Wanted. I liked both of them anyway.

Yea, those were some beautiful tracks weren't they? The game was pretty much flawless. Did I mention that I played it using my brand spanking new Voodoo graphiks akselarator? lol. Good times, good times.

+1 Sam. Maybe they could alternate between a story/tuner driven game and an old school super car/point-to-point one. Not likely to happen but thats one way to satisfy both camps.
