Mafia II

I have 8800GTX with physx on I get avg 20 fps on high both indoors & outdoors , w/o physx 50 fps , some other games even with physx on are playable fine like Cryostasis , Mirror's Edge etc.

Another game where physx made fps unplayable for me was Sacred 2 Fallen Angels.

Since he as 8800GT , much weaker than a GTX , his fps will suffer even more , so he can't use both high settings & physx on together for it to be playable fps.

@Parth , maybe who knows , we will have to wait and see , games like sim racers like GTR2 had big fps hit when it rained , not sure about GTA4 on PC.

oh so that wasn't meant for me?

But in any case, I have a 9600 GT which is on par or even a tad bit on the lower side when compared to a 8800 GT......so if I'm able to get a decent (for me  ) fps in, he also should be able to get it right?

you have both physx and Ambient occlusion off :O How can you do that? I can never live with that

What do you mean how can he do that.. running the game at a decent res and fps is more important than Phsyx, AO etc. You can't expect a 2 year old GPU to pull that off.

Either buy a new GPU then or lower the res to 1280*720. You are such a drama queen lol.

don't call me that :samui:

Now I'm getting it.....I'm the one who's weird here (and I thought you guys were). I always push the setting as far as possible.....till it's barely playable because I don't want to miss out on graphics no matter what ( that's turning out to be a compulsive disorder :( )

I was gonna try that man. Read about that too. How much of a boost did you get after disabling particle effects?

I was getting around 55FPS outdoors & 25-30FPS in firefights (could drop to high teens) with collisions enabled.

Without any collisions I am getting 60FPS outdoors (not going higher cause of v-sync) and in firefights its usually above 50, drops to mid 40s here & there when the indoor area is large (like the first floor of the mission). I think this is because of the SSAO as there's far too many objects to cull when indoors. Also in all cases I had cloth simulation enabled for Vito & his two friends.

Overall this game is very nicely optimized apart from Physx which is quite poor. Its nice to see them follow Metro 2033 ie. give the option to use Physx on CPU, which would mean the ones with ATI cards can enable it as well but the optimization itself is a generation behind Metro 2033. See this:

It looks like there's no proper multithreading PhysX CPU-solver for this game, cause it does uses all 4 cores...but its not even close to stressing them, lots of under-utilization here.

Goddamn! Some 1337 nerdage in this thread right here. I still might just make PC gamers out of youse guys.

Shame it has to be this thread though, instead of a decent game.

Can i use joypad with this game.

Tried the X360 demo.

The framerate is noticeably poor compared to the PC. Its sub 24 fps in some cases, although given the quality of visuals its cranking out, that's understandable. The draw distance is pretty impressive for a console version.

@Pee-Rav-Eer

How do I change the option to use CPU for physx, or is it that way by default?

Go to Nvidia control panel and then Phsyx setting, there disable GPU acceleration. It should use the CPU now.

I also just tried the PS3 demo , its not that bad , the missing grass that some are making out to be such a big thing is hardly noticeable , I didn't even look at the grass until decided to specifically check out what's all the fuss is about.

It does have jaggies all over the place , framerate was decent , shooting is good ,cars handling is somewhere between arcade and simulation of PC , there is no option to choose car handling on PS3 demo like PC version.

For any Mafia fan not f**king haters who doesn't have a PC capable enough to play Mafia 2 on PC , should not miss out on this even on consoles. :good:
