The FBI has taken an interest in online attacks and harassment perpetrated against video game developers, according to the International Game Developers Association.

IGDA executive director Kate Edwards told Polygon that the FBI, which dedicates much of its resources to understanding and combating 'cyber crime', approached her for a meeting in July.

"They noted a rise in activity," Edwards said. "They themselves monitor this activity, but they're focused more on cyber crime issues like hacking and very malicious harassment."

Though the meeting was held in July, ongoing harassment - including posting of personal details, home addresses, and phone numbers against game developers and personalities such as Anita Sarkeesian of Feminist Frequency - led the IGDA to release a statement last week calling on the community to condemn the attacks:

"While we support diverse viewpoints and healthy debate on the issues within our industry, we condemn personal attacks such as these which are not only morally reprehensible, but also illegal in many countries. We call on the entire game community to stand together against this abhorrent behavior."

Edwards said the FBI and IGDA will work together to better disseminate preventative measures game developers can take to protect themselves online.
