For indoors I use bounce flash (nikon sb400) and outdoors I try to shoot in soft light (shade and early morning/evening). I shoot RAW only and fine tune the vibrance saturation and contrast in lightoom. Don't rush out and upgrade the kit lens just yet - play around with those settings in lightroom.
