Dragon Age: Origins

Aftrunner

Graphics are very mediocre, but the environment is lush. the dungeon levels especially are a blast. Brings back memories of some of the dungeon levels of NWN. But in a game as engaging as this, graphics will definitely not matter. I was kinda disappointed for the first hour or so with the graphics, but then i could not care less.

This game is probably the best "Proper" RPG on the 360 yet.

^^ Nice. How is the visuals ? From the reviews and the videos seen so far, they are pretty lackluster. Also, how does the game compare to other RPGs on X360 like Oblivion ?

What john said. Really, you don't play RPGs like these for the visuals. But with that said, DA looks decent enough. The towns have very impressive architecture and the character models, armor, weapons looks exactly as you'd expect. Don't believe the reviews, the game looks good enough to me. Far from "disappointing" or "lackluster".

The game is NOTHING, I repeat, NOTHING like Oblivion. Oblivion was an open-world RPG with a stupid enemy scaling system and uninteresting plot (still a good game though). DA is very heavy on the plot and writing with emphasis on dialog and character interaction. In terms of structure, it's quite similar to other Bioware RPGs (BG, KOTOR, NWN). You go to a hub area like a large city or a small village)and do quests in and around that area. You are free to travel back and forth between hubs though. But don't expect Oblivion style free roaming and exploration.

The combat system is also very different from Oblivion. It's a party-based system where you benefit by having multiple class characters. It's a bit on the tougher side and requires some strategy (which is somewhat difficult to pull off on the console versions).

Hope that helps you. I recommend picking it up. Dragon Age is what a "real" RPG is unlike the rather toned down and accessible ones like Oblivion, FO3, Fable II etc.

BTw, for the guys who are playing the game, are you making full use of the tactics slot or are you just playing you way through? And where do i unlock the berserker specilaization?

The tactics slots are one of the best features of the game.

Not sure about Berserker but I managed to unlock Duelist (in Denerim).

^^ thanks for that Tyler. If you are playing it on PC, can you let me know if you need an admin access to install the game ?

Anytime! I don't have it for the PC yet but some folks are already playing it, so maybe they can answer that question.

I seriously cannot imagine a 25-minute battle with the console version controls. They're good for minor skirmishes but epic battles would need you to pause too often.

But I have a feeling that the overall difficulty is toned down in the console versions to make the real-time combat easier.

The console version difficulty was nerfed. The biggest change is friendly fire - it was taken down a notch in the console versions. In Normal mode there is no friendly fire on consoles, there is 50% friendly fire on PC.

This game is epic. I wish I didn't have to leave the game for 4 days because of stupid work. Oh and before MT deletes this post - this pwns ME big time. Except for the graphics, and that doesn't count.

Its ridiculously tough sometimes. And yeah.... Just like tyler said you pretty much have to pause. ALL the time for epic battles

like the dragon. Oddly enough i kinda started preferring the console version controls after around 30 hrs. I played the pc version

at a friends place for 3-4 hrs but i just couldn't get adjusted to the mouse keyboard controls... And some of the stuff that made

the 360 version awesome was missing. unlike the console versions the pc version doesn't explicitly mark areas of interest.

while its true chests etc do get marked stuff that would add to codex entries, etc are not. so unless you mouse over them you will

never know they will add to your codex. Also.... npc's dont have names over them unless you mouse over them. And in my opinion

whoever made it necessary to right click to open stuff needs to be shot >.<. So yeah. Even with the better gfx and framerate

i'm sticking with the console version. >.>

edit:- Oh yeah. forgot about the friendly fire on normal too lol. That kinda got annoying :P I'll eventually get the pc version.

just maybe later when a major expansion comes out.... like in a gold edition or something. but for now i'm content.

While i cannot talk about demon's souls, Dragon Age has an amazingly rich world. So if you're one of those people that prefer plot

over gameplay you will love this game. That being said the combat is positively stellar. It takes a while to get into the rhythm of the game

but once you do you will not want to stop playing.

@Bulovski:- Yea. for some reason people seem to suck up to the pc version and completely ignore the negatives..... Hell.... the negatives were

that jarring to me cause not a single review ever mentioned them >.< Also..... contrary to what all the reviewers say even the pc version has some

gawdawful textures in places. its not the uber enhancement over the console versions people expect it to be. This was most noticeable to me

during the dwarf origin on the pc... Sure. it looks better. Just not by too much.

It seems my initial impressions about this game were wrong after all. This game is a delight for all RPG lovers. The tactics work brilliantly, and the difficulty is well paced and the character animations are superb.

This game had me hooked for 7 hours straight. Now this is proving to be a worthy of competing with KoTR2.

However does anyone else also feel that Warrior classes are not string enough when compared with other classes.

@Bul, you cannot deny the fact that this game would have been a much better experience if the graphics were better. Dragons sweeping over, all the gore. I mean why cant we have an RPG with awesome graphics (I am not talking about action RPG's here).
