I see the game doing very well over a period of time. A very nice example would be when the beta started, you had some sites & random blogs who played for 2-3 hrs and posted mag sucks articles, but as the beta progressed the people who sticked with it and levelled up to unlock 256p mode, won't put the game down. Zipper's game are not for the casuals, don't go expecting auto aim or snapping on to targets when u use iron sights

+100.. i really don't think everyone who buys it on ivg will enjoy it.. it's not as fun as kz2/mw2 when playing with friends..

but if you have friends who enjoy the game as well and are actually going for objectives in the same squad then it pwns all other shooters..

regarding sales i think it will sell well.. US preorders look great.. :(

EG preview

even if you aren't going into it for the love of the stats and the long-term picture, Zipper's game is still a pretty good online shooter. The basic untweaked weapon loadouts are simple and effective, the audio conveys the zing of bullets and the rumble of distant explosions with brutal clarity, and the DualShock's dead zone seems to be largely missing in action.

On top of that, regardless of the population of any map, most of the time people will play along. Not only has Zipper been smart with its detailing - you get bonus experience for following orders and perks for staying near your commander and not breaking up the squad - but the objectives are suitably basic most of the time to allow for a core group of daredevils to do all the tricky stuff, while a gaggle of more casual players can either hang back and snipe, or dash about and go nuts with assault rifles.

Once the numbers start to get bigger, and you're moving between small squad objectives to larger battles requiring input from the whole fighting force, your mission orders are moving from one target to the next with a pleasant speed, keeping the whole of the map in play without ever leaving you dizzy or confused.

And when MAG really gets going, it's like nothing else on a console. To see a battle raging all around you and to feel a part of it is quite an achievement, especially when the interface is kept so simple that you have a pretty good chance of actually understanding the role you're playing as well.

But that's the thing: if the cliché is that an overwhelming majority of games like to give you the role of a god or a monster - when they drop you into the shoes of a soldier, it's either one of the super- variety, or a plucky grunt given a deadly secret mission - MAG takes the bold move of making you a nobody.

The whole PMC stuff with each of them having their own faux websites and the factions battling it out for the contracts with real time faction stat tracking on MAG.com is very cool. even the fake news broadcast detailing the shadow wars is a nice touch, im sure they'll keep updating it with new videos periodically.

Just watched all the GNN special reports and dev diaries. It's very ambitious what they're trying. Don't know if it will work out though. It looks like the kind of game you have to put a lot of time into to really enjoy and these days people have very short attention spans

Btw, once you pick a PMC is that permanently your PMC or can you change each time you play the game? And SVER seems kinda underpowered compared to the others, at least based on the descriptions from the devs. Even the devs prefer playing as Valor or Raven instead of SVER.

nope.. you can't change your PMC.. you'll have to delete your character for that (everything will be deleted.. stats/ribbons/xp etc etc).. but in the final game you'll be able to switch once you reach lvl 60 and max out your character..

and all factions are pretty much the same.. they just have different skins.. the weapons are balanced as well (raven has the better assault rifles.. valor/sver have awesome lmg n smgs.. the difference is barely noticeable though.. )

the more i am reading about this game the more i am getting excited as well as confused

i read the game guide on forums of mag.com

a very illustrated and detailed guide i must say

now at one end all these looks very very interesting

on the other hand i wonder if many ppl will be able to play the game as it is to be played

i mean with so much details, complex gameplay, objectives and all those things

i think it is the first of kind which gives u the real sense of war as soldiers with squad leaders, platoon leaders, fragos and so on

dunno wether the game will die sooner than later becoz of less and less dedicated players

as the game does not seem to go well with noobs

Sony explains the lack of MAG reviews

MAG is one of the biggest exclusive games on the Playstation 3 in 2010. Despite the released date quickly approaching, the ambitious first-person shooter hasn’t been reviewed by the media yet. Jeff Rubenstein, the Social Media Manager of SCEA, explain why this is the case in the comments section of the Playstation.Blog:

Reviews can’t be written until the game is actually out. I mean, you can’t pass pre-release judgment on a game whose major, industry-leading feature (256 players in a single battle) can’t be tested until release day.

MAG will be released in North America on January 26th.
