Power woes down south!

Bangalore feels the pinch of the power crisis

Bangalore: In South India, a shortfall in rains has aggravated an acute power crisis. Production is down at hydel plants because reservoirs did not receive adequate water.

With a shortfall of almost 700 megawatts in Bangalore, the city is seeing unscheduled power cuts across the day which many say is the worst in the last five years.

Schools are one of the most badly affected in the city due to the frequent power cuts.

"There are so many power cuts in a day, it's very difficult, as children can't read the books and also it gets very hot for them," says Tender Feet Playhome teacher, Anuradha Murthy.

What is making things worse is that Bangalore has seen an increase in power consumption by almost 30 per cent.

The situation is aggravating as the rains are still weak over the region. And load shedding has already been introduced in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

On Friday, the Karnataka government announced that it would also start load shedding from July 21.

However, all this is clearly not worrying the state Chief Minister, BS Yeddyurappa, Chief Minister, as while announcing in his budget on Friday he promised free power to farmers in the state.

"The power shortage is temporary, what we will give to farmers, when we give it, will be free. I believe in god, I'm sure in the next one week, he will ensure good rains to fill our reservoirs," says Yeddyurappa.

The CM is seeking divine intervention to solve the power crisis, meanwhile as the power cuts continue unabated, Bangaloreans are clearly feeling the pinch.

"I can't watch TV because of the power cuts," says Tender Feet Playhome student, Ajay. (lol)

Although the city's electricity board, BESCOM say that there is no need to hit the panic button. But they do agree that at the moment the only way to come out of the crisis is through load shedding.

The last couple of days, my area has had more time without power than with. I just got home and I've been told that it's been off and on the whole day. The power backup can handle the lights/fans and I can still keep the lappy and modem/router running but what I can't run, unfortunately, is the bloody 360. I've already had it RROD on me once after a particularly bad outage. So are any of you southies on GI feeling the pain yet?

On and related note, IMB and I sweated it out the entire time we were in Planet M yesterday. You just can't escape the outages!

well its the same situation in Kolkata.we do see power cuts at any time of the day.

its uncertain but it is tend to rise as we come close to the festival of (Lights)durga pooja which consumes lot of electricity and they cut supply to provide electricity then.

Luckily i have ups, 5-6 times ps3 was on when lights went off.

We need nuclear deal with america

The problem down south is specifically because of the monsoon not bothering to show up at full strength. Stupid global warming (for whatever reason) :/

its a shame when cities like bangalore and mumbai have powercuts....how are u gonna convince multinationals to set up base here when there isnt even a steady power supply...its even worse too see this in a city that is dubbed the IT capital

Absolutely. What quality of life can you offer prospective investors and employees when theres no power to run anything in the first place?

God bless us.

That, my friend, is the exact attitude the new CM has. All he can offer as a solution is his "belief in God" and that he "knows" the rains are coming by the end of next week :/

thats why they go to china.

proper infastucture hi nahi hai.

If the the reserves of resource of electricty is finishing.Goverments should spend on solar energy. Its a huge potential was watching a programme Modern Marvels.

i think in arizonia they have created huge solar panel system .it was huge enough to supply electricty to cities likes las vegas(the worlds most electric consuming city).

the elctricity consumed by las vegas in one day is same as comparable to whole of france ( if i remeber right)

the cost involved in infrastructure of solar panels is mind boggling, tht power plants provide only part of Lasvegas requirement.........best option is to Tap the hydel resources, india has 1 of the best potential for hydel energy inworld

Ulhasnagar City has been facing power cuts (load shedding) since ages now. Its almost 6 hours of SCHEDULED POWER CUTS EVERY DAY :boxing: Its a good thing my residence falls in the "industrial area" and we only get power cuts on Friday, BUT on Friday, the power goes out at 6 a.m. in the morning and comes at 10 p.m. at night :P but yeah....uninterrupted power during the rest of the 6 days of the week :D

On Friday, we go out :D and sometimes if we don't, we count on our rather large inverter :D

PSP and DS for the win :D

Hey, he can't help it if it's the power can he? I can tell you that my box RROD'd when there was a power fluctuation while I was playing CoD4 MP. I turned it back just to have the game crash on me a couple of times and then I got the three red rings!
