vCoH/CoH2 =/= Total war =/= DoW3.

They all are RTS but they are very different. Total War is a turn based game where you have a huge a** map. Goal is to conqueror and hold every region on the map and combat is kinda *you can fight or simulate* thing-y. CoH2 is a very serious RTS game that will kill you if you do not know how to micro and counter units. If you are behind your opponent or lose your vet units, then 99% of the time you will lose the game....no comeback from that. DoW3 is a cool game where you don't have to worry about cover or vets. In DoW3, you can build many units and keep fighting. The pop cap is also 250 which results in a blob fest but there are so many basic and elite units that you will feel overwhelmed early on (which is a good thing). You don't have to worry about Total war kinda map region thing-y either.

So In my opinion,

1)- Turned based - Total War.

2)- Micro - CoH.

3)- Sit back and enjoy- DoW.

It is a new game so don't worry. There are 3 factions right now; Space Marine, Eldar and Orks. Start off with Space Marine faction as it is the most balanced/OpieOP faction in the game.

Easy- Space Marine and Orks.

Hard- Weak core units (health wise) but good attack...shield Dependant- Eldar

Also, try 2v2s first, then move to 3v3s. Do not touch 1v1s in beta.

Basic knowledge of units- Click on Menu (top left) - faction.

Spent some time in game, current immediate surface level issues that need to be resolved are,

  • No retreat / disengage button. If you forget where you left your units prepare to hear them getting mulched this is aggravated more by the lack of cover / tactical garrison options
  • The UI is a little tedious to work with, especially considering that you have to move around the map and W,A,S,D are mapped to actives. Now the RTS puritans will come and say you can use the arrow cluster for same but that is out of the way for making quick flicks and as already mentioned before due to lack of disengage and cover options, units left in open are most likely going to get mulched
  • Now, there are two ways of playing this game, intense micro or blob, guess what 90% of the people end up doing. Generally better players micro the Heroes and blob their lines
  • relic, fix your resources please. I have plenty of requisition but abysmal levels of powers, this is after prioritising the latter on all the CP's I got up
  • Can we please get other game modes as well. Power core is all well and good but I want my Annihilation back please

The good stuff,

  • relic did not sit on their past laurels and released another game, they have redone their systems again like with Dawn of War 2
  • Game runs without any hitches, match-maker is functional, there are private lobbies in place as well because they learnt from the Company of Heroes 2 fiasco
  • Unit balance for the most part is on point, Heroes will need tweaks but only after the game goes live
  • Base building makes sense, only inconsistency is you can build anywhere on reasonable terrain. I would rather they provide some way of quickly transporting troops to the front lines / dropping in reinforcements rapidly depending on your faction
  • Game looks beautiful, functions beautiful, runs beautiful on my modest PC's. So as long as the final build is not a straight up curve ball, this game is looking nice
  • Overall, inspite of all the changes I see this going to be a great game and a good release in the Warhammer 40K pantheon

  • Blob is the reason many players are complaining that the game has turned into RTS-cum-MOBA. Three lanes where customised units run continuously while the hero's are the only thing thats micro'd
  • Same problem with me.....I think beta lacks the usage of Power resource
  • Again, beta has limited maps/modes. Most likely, it will be released at launch or as dlc
  • I think Eldars have web gates/warp portals.....dint test them out
  • Even at (almost) lowest settings (vsync on) and 1080p, main menu shows 70 fps max for me (dont recall the ingame fps) [gtx960]

When did you play? Didnt see you playing. Also I just played two matches, hard to micro manage or muve mouse atm.....fell on my right arm, wrist and elbow have severely restricted movement. Relic gave the option to party, but idk if they gave 'vs friends' option

Played today afternoon.

Naah! Blob is pretty much standard in most RTS titles, the problem is older games had a cover system so you could go to some other location, micro some around then return to other positions to look into how other units are faring. Now if you leave units stranded on the map, you will get punished hard.

The current level of accruing POWER is slow as f**k even after you maximise every point for POWER production (in which case you suffer REQUISITION build up). I think they need to balance the rate at which one accrues POWER.

Micro levels have gone up without actually compensating for how to work around it due to lack of an effective cover system. And I really do not have a problem with their being a lack of cover, just that there should be some way to improve your situation if you do not have a very high APM.

Eldars have a webway portal, Orks have Wartruks (reinforcements), Space Marines have orbital relays (for reinforcements, drop-ship assaults), only problem is that an orbital relay insertion is very, very expensive and due to the lack of a defining front-line executing a good drop-ship assault is super unlikely unless your enemy is totally inept at managing their blob.

My maximum frame-rates according to in-game benchmarks is ~59fps but the experience has been fluid and that is what counts. Actual numbers can be anything but consistency matters most.

They have mentioned more game-modes post launch but no commitments, so if you are a regular CoH player, you are screwed out of luck, more so if you are a DoW 2 player because no Last Stand mode either.

Well yeah....

1- No retreat.

2- No vets.

3- 250 pop cap.

^_^

But I'm enjoying it. I don't have to micro my units like I do in Coh and some of the heroes abilities are bad sh*t opie. I'm pre-ordered it...let's see how it goes.

Also do not invest points in any upgrade early on because you need more units to counter your opponents blob. Stock up on it so that you can build heavies later onwards. I usually don't call in a 3cp hero...better to wait for a 6cp then go for the 9cp one.

Have no problem with the lack of veterancy, cover and the population cap.

It is not as micro heavy on individual unit, for now. I feel as we get more heroes and more abilities in the final game, it would be a nasty surprise.

Thanks for the tips, will play some more tomorrow. I have bought the game from Amazon.de, will be waiting for a week or two before getting my hands on the game.

Eldars are awesome. Everyone should try Eldars (in full release :P ). I was initially struggling with Eldars because even their low a** units like banshees need power. They only have 2 units that don't require power. Both of these units cannot stand melee attacks but have an opie range....so just micro a bit. Tech up to phase 2 and 3 as soon as possible and start pumping out wraith warriors (range and melee). These warriors are awesome and they will destroy most units with ease. Once you have these units on the battle-field, just get a Fire prism and then just wait...wait more.....little bit more.... BOOM TITAN!! I usually buy upgrades for my warriors after building a fire prism.

Another thing about Eldars is that you can teleport their base structures anywhere on the map. It is a cool ability just like OKW forward HQs in CoH2 (if you have played coh2 :P ) and you can always teleport them back to safety every 3 mins (?) if you feel they are in danger.
