Joy
Will this work for game updates as well? Nope , updates will not work most probably as per guide u need to select download in background and then pause it , but in game updates you can't put the download in background.. , so if this works , it will work with demos only. Also I get the same speed while downloading the demo on PS3 , 200mb in 1 hour , i.e 60kbps , same as pc , I don't require PS3 proxy , do you guys get less speed while downloading from the PS3.. Angad.
Though I think its too much of a trouble using the trick. It seemed like a lot of trouble to me too...........till I actually got down to do it!! It took me just 20 minutes to configure the whole thing (as i got little confused with the 'internet connection sharing' feature in windows , else if you know what to do, it should just take 10 minutes)!!! And trust me...........its totally worth it!! You can even use it to bypass the firmware check when you go online (thats what I do.....to remain on 2.53)!!! Before V2.40 was released, you could use this trick to download and install even those demos which were removed from PSN, but with V2.40 i think they added a check where if you try to install a different .pkg file than the one you downloaded from PSN Link, it gives an installation error (which seems alright, as it was more of a security bug, since it enabled people to install full games as well, without buying them!!!) Those game updates are kinda slow. Demos/PSN games are superfast. Infact I feel the nos rushing faster than on my pc

Yeah....if updates cant be downloaded in background mode, this might not work!! However, i think there is a work around for this as well...you see, how the ps3proxy works is (i think), when you replace the link/URL with the .pkg file, whenever the PS3 tries to access that particular URL, it gets diverted to that file. So, when you try to download the update, it will try to access a URL to download it. Now you can capture this URL and download the file on your PC and do the replace file thing mentioned in the steps above. After this, click again on the Game Update. Now this should again try to access the same URL, but since you replaced the URL with the 'Path to the downloaded file', it will start downloading the file from your PC (i.e. from the path where you saved the download). I haven tried it out, but someone can try it out and tell if it works or not!! -Angy

Joy, it's not much about the speed but "resume". Many times we face issues like power cuts, and then have to download the whole thing again.. Many times we face issues like power cuts, and then have to download the whole thing again.. Its not always u know. I recently downloaded Quest for booty. Power cut of 3 times, and I played a game whilst downloading etc etc all the things that you should supposedly not do. But after the download finished, it worked. Maybe the errors that arise during installations are one off cases.
Shantz
BTW, has anyone tried this PS3proxy on linux (under wine or something). I'd hate to boot up windows just to download this..(heck, i don't boot up my laptop at all for downloads..my router does that for me automatically )

I think that happens if you don't properly pause the demo download , my PS3 is connected to a UPS so no problems of power cut , I get 10-15 min. backup , can easily pause it and resume later , and it never gets corrupted.. Death Stryke
^Yup, if u pause it then no issues, but my damn UPS, it doesnt work with my ps3. the ps3 is apparently too fast and if power goes out, switches off for 1 second and then goes into standby when the battery backup starts. Which model r u using joy?

BTW, thinking about how this PS3 thing works, it looks to me that "ANY" proxy server can be used for this..not just ps3proxy..its pretty simple actually what it is doing...just that it pre-configures things..looks like i'll be able to get this working on my router after all using squid or privoxy... Death Stryke
^Damnit I have microtek, but its no use. Coz once to test it, i connected it, and switched the mains off. The ps3 switched off instantly. the stupid backup started after the ps3 switched off. Same thing happened to me with another UPS too . Anyway its OT i guess
