PC Gamer: 92/100.

The best Forza Horizon is now one of the best racing games on PC. Vast, varied and lots of fun.

This is the first full Forza game to arrive on PC, and it does so via the Universal Windows Platform. As such, it's only available on Windows 10 through the Windows Store. On my home PC, using a GTX 970 and an i5-6600K, it runs at a solid 60 frames per second at 1920x1200, even despite my pushing up some graphics options above the auto-recommended 'High' setting. However, my less powerful work PC did experience some noticeable stutter, which improved as I closed programs running in the background, but never fully abated. Seemingly this is a known issue, to be addressed in a future patch.

Ultimately, I wouldn't expect to hit 'Ultra' unless your rig is pretty new, and I'd advise caution if you're only just scraping the recommended settings. A demo is planned sometime after launch. If you're at all concerned about whether you're able to run the game, I'd advise waiting for that. The upside is that the sense of speed feels exhilarating at 60 frames per second. Forza has always been good at selling the excitement of its fastest cars, but this is a clear step up over the Xbox One's 30fps. It's gorgeous too, from the lavish recreation of each car, to the vibrant colour palette of the Australian setting.

Forza Horizon 3 is huge, varied and constantly entertaining. It treads a fine balance between simulation and arcade—bombastic and silly at times, but also an accomplished populist racing game. I don't like the script, the cast of irritants manning the radio stations, the way playing your own music in-game requires the use of Microsoft Groove, or the fact that one of the nicknames you can choose is ‘Bantersaurus Rex’. More seriously, I worry Microsoft will continue its habit of integrating DLC cars and expansions in overbearing ways (Forza Horizon 2 went as far as playing an in-game trailer for its Storm Island expansion.) But these are annoyances I'm prepared to forgive in a game as good as this.

That got to be the worst final race ever in racing history. Even showcase 2-4 were better and more fun. The last race was a buggy drive against.... an airship. You literally cannot lose.

Anyways, I had a blast. Quick rundown:

Good:

  • Complete freedom. Right from racing to exploring to progressing. It's up to you how you want to approach.
  • Gorgeous setting. Well, it's Australia. So. ZUoqlvg.gif
  • Garage - a massive amount of cars to choose from.
  • Customization - again, very good. Both visual and tuning. However, there aren't many body kits.
  • Community - quite good and active. Show off your customization skills and earn.
  • Auction house. Finally, can buy and sell cars.
  • Radio - something good to listen while driving. Also having custom track option is a bonus.
  • Championship is fun. Choosing a bunch of tracks you like, customizing race settings and driving around.
  • Street races.
  • Decent amount of collectibles. Nothing overdone like Ubisoft games. About 15 barns, 150 boards to smash and 13 beauty places to check out.

Bad:

  • Not greatly optimized. The performance is quite bad while driving in the city.
  • Random stuttering for no reason.
  • Online requirement.
  • Microsoft store.
  • Online issues.
  • Broken photo mode.
  • UWP environment. No exclusive full screen, no re-shade, nothing works.
  • Laggy menus. While tuning your car, this makes absolute nightmare to go through all stuff at 1 fps.
  • The final showdown is a huge letdown. Actually, entire campaign was bad. Only 5 showcases and all were just too easy even for a new driver.
  • While the game is gorgeous and detailed, the car interior is not detailed at all. It was very disappointing to see flat interiors of cars. The Crew did it better.

Mixed:

  • The Game does not punish you at all. Finish first or last, doesn't matter. You are still rewarded well for progressing forward. There is just no downside.
  • 63 races. While some might find it a lot. Personally, I think it's less given the types of races. The inclusion of championship is nice, but it has the same 63 tracks again. So basically you have to finish every race TWICE.
  • Bucket challenge. Ugh. Less fun, more frustration.
  • Cannot reset/restart your progress. Everything is stored in the cloud.
  • Short. Takes about ~10-12 hours to unlock final showcase.

Price:

  • The ultimate edition doesn't justify the price. Basically, it's only worth if don't want to wait for 4 extra days (which is over now). While the VIP bonus is good, it is not required as you earn a ton of credits as you progress. I finished with about ~15+ million credits. Just nothing to do with it.
  • Second, the ultimate edition does not include the upcoming expansion. It costs additional $35. So entire package currently costs $135. Let that sink in.

Future: Currently, I didn't find any daily stuff. However, they are planning it. In October there are going to be weekly events. Looking forward to it.

That said, I enjoyed the game a lot. About time we had a good racing game. nt3JU92.gif

Recommended if you are into racing. Others can wait for price drop or pick up after a couple of patches are released. Avoid ultimate edition unless you plan to invest your time for a minimum of 6 months to get value.
