It feels like Im beating a dead horse but the Resident Evil franchise has gone downhill as of late, at least according to fans. The sixth main entry in the franchise, Operation Raccoon City, and the spin-off game, Umbrella Corp, have all been panned by critics and gamers alike. Resident Evil 5 did fair better on the market and review front but it still took away the survival horror that started the franchise. However, since Resident Evil 7 was announced back at E3 2016, the series looks to be returning to its roots. Not only can I assure you that it has, but number seven shied away from being shadowed in obscurity ala P.T. The game is scarily accessible for newcomers and veterans alike.

Resident Evil 7 Review (PS4) – A Disappointing Return To Its Roots

Resident Evil 7 is a much better Resident Evil game compared to Resident Evil 6 but it’s not this generations Resident Evil 4, actually it’s quite far from it. It’s also far from being a bad game, actually it’s a pretty good game that’s worth purchasing but the issues keeps it from reaching its full potential. Should Capcom continue with the first person Resident Evil games? It really depends on if they are actually committed to this new approach, and are not just cashing in on the virtual reality craze currently.

+Bring back classic features.

+Great setting.

+/- The story starts strong with mystery and intrigue but sharply declines after a few hours.

– Enemy A.I.

– Overdoing the same encounters.

Final Score: 7.5/10

For a long time, Resident Evil hasnt been what it once was. It ditched its survival horror roots to become more action oriented but failed. After so much criticism and commercial failure, Capcom finally came to senses and went back to where it all began.

But in doing so, Capcom has managed to redefine the roots of Resident Evil. Mixing new formulas with the old and delivering the perfect blend with Resident Evil 7.

It is to be noted that weapons, although powerful, will never measure up to the difficulty level of Resident Evil 7 but that is how a survival horror game works. You will always be the helpless underdog who needs to survive by any means. And means are hard to come by in RE7, bullets are far and in between and often you will have to make a choice, either shoot or run and hide to save bullets for later.

Of course, there are situations where running is not an option.

Resident Evil 7s combat is clearly the high point of the series. There is a delicate but perfect balance between melee and gunplay while keeping the survival horror element in the forefront.

The lighting and overall atmosphere are beautifully handled. Graphics are the best this franchise has seen so far but occasional frame rate drops and minor anti-aliasing issues still affect the game. Character models for the Molded have a classic Resident Evil feel to them so we have mix of both new and classic.

The element of horror and richness of character personality is elevated by exceptional voice acting that brings every member of The Baker Family to life.

For $60, Resident Evil not only provides a great first-time experience but its replayability makes it a worthy purchase. There are multiple ways to complete the game, multiple endings, and higher difficulty levels that will keep you busy with the game for a long time.

Resident Evil 7 has redefined survival horror for the franchise.
