@ghb: Is your PS3 playing demos / games / movies off the hard drive without any problems? And is it kept in a well ventilated location ?

yup...playing videos/demos..just not reading any type of discs :majesty:

and yeah, it is in a pretty well ventilated location.

darn it...now my PS3 has stopped reading discs too....blu rays, DVDs :nerves:

i have an indian PAL 60GB one and i was hoping that wouldn't get affected but i was playing RFOM right now and it just hung on me...after rebooting the system, it stopped reading any disc...just keep showing that loading icon in the top right of the screen...i am on FW 2.10 btw

and worst of all...sony customer care lines are saying they're closed right now...even though their working hours are 10-6 pm monday to sunday

this is SOOOO bad :majesty:

didnt pixeljunkie inform us that RFOM is on the shitlist of games (along with COD4) that can trigger the spin of death?

ps: maybe we all should read up some more before popping in UT3...

pps: reaper, pixeljunkie - since you guys dont have any warranty and have already tried dismantling your ps3s - could you post details regarding your BR drive model/batch numbers & DoM?

Went today to a Sony showroom to have a feel of the PS3

motherf**kers had connected the 40 gig model to a 1080p tv and had set the resolution at 576p. Imagine the graphics :/

After so much difficulty i had convinced my dad but after seeing it, he didn't like it at all. The fellow tried the settings but it still didn't work. I set the resolution at 1080p but after sometime it went back to 576p *sighs* [ Don't ask me how ]

looks like, i will need to use my own money if i want it

Vinit, i think 40GB owners are fine as from what i've read the diode yield for launch pieces was only 20%. With the 40GB and possibly 80GB, you're assured of a newer diode. To quote a D-toid member who commented about this on my D-toid cblog:

Yeah, there have been some claims that the updates have taken out a few drives and some have had issues with cod4, a few actually came from non-trolls. All things considered my launch unit is still fine and the ps3's have been much more reliable than I expected considering the diode in the blu-ray drives originally had a yield of 20%. At least with the 40 gig you know you're getting a newer diode.

very interesting. but i thought the problem had to do with the BR drive's motor mechanism spinning out of control and overheating/shorting out? or are you saying some early production units might have a faulty diode and the drive tries to compensate that by re-re-reading a disc and finally crapping out?

^^ Well Kotaku's contribution would have helped :majesty:

yep but thats only 8k. The problem is not the money but that my dad is pretty annoyed with the whole 360. For him its like 40k gone to the drain and the way the problems are arising i don't wanna risk buying an NTSC console. I will just pick a 40gig or 60 gig from here even if i have to wait for 2-3 months. Its worth it, i think

The reason I was against the Xbox was solely due to the hardware failure..else I would have surely bought a 360 due to the number of games it had vs. the PS3. After reading up a lot on the net, I finally decided for a PS3 coz it would be stable and atleast I woundn't have worry about not thinking twice about playing for long hours on it.

And then when I finally did go to buy a PS3, I was enticed by the grey market unit being sold for 4-5k less than the legit one but now I am so glad I bought the one with the warranty. Even though its pretty unfortunate that the PS3 is also plagued by hardware failure. ;)

I just hope the whole replacement process goes smoothly and I end up with another 60GB one...I've got some sweet PS2 games coming in a week's time and a 40GB one would just defeat the whole purpose.

WTF, at the rate we're going the only reliable form of non-PC gaming is using a DS/PSP/GBA.

seriously...i've had an imported phat PSP for 1 1/2 years now and it is as solid as a rock..i didn't even think once for any kind of warranty issues i might be having

but my love for sony is fading fast after my PS3's "spin of death" (within 2 months)...even my 8 months old vaio has gotten a stuck backspace key ;)

who is on this list?

reaper - my heart bleeds for you bro.

pixeljunkie - i'm kinda happy you faced an issue with your PS3 (as it got you on board IndianVideoGamer)

ghb - you have warranty, let us know how smooth the exchange is... or not

ayush12 - can you confirm if your (uncle's) ps3 is exhibiting the same symptoms?

ur comparing this to the RROD? there is slight difference in scale of the problem, i think...slight

peace

91 360s vs 37 PS3s

4 out of 37 is 10.8% - this number has now crossed the acceptable threshold of 5-8% failure rate. also of greater concern is the fact that most of these ps3s have been purchased from the grey market.

So Yes This Thread Is As Important *Now*!
