Noctis
One of the threads I do not wish to bump. But my 40 GB PS3 is not reading discs at times. It works when I eject and put it in again or restart the PS3, but even then certain games freezes when I run it. Anything I can do to reduce the chances of a complete SOD or do I just watch my PS3 die.

kunallkw
those small with brush discs china made are not advised as per the manual , they do more harm than help
Noctis
40 GB? Worst model I guess. I was afraid of a YLOD for some time, but not this. those small with brush discs china made are not advised as per the manual , they do more harm than help I did not quite understand what you mean. Does it mean your previous advice does not help? Also the lens is not completely dead, just not reading at times which is not a good sign as its getting more frequent now. kunallkw
are you really from Kerala Bikram asked you to get it cleaned , only way to clean it by not opening is using those china made discs , which have a small brush incorporated onto the disc, they brush the dust/smudges off the lens, when those sectors are being read. this is not advised from Sony , it causes more harm than help only way to cure it is getting a lens replacement once it fully dies , which costs around 1-3k , and labour extra . and are again cheap quality china made so expect them to fail in about 2-3 months depending upon usage (may differ person to person)
Noctis
Bikram asked you to get it cleaned , only way to clean it by not opening is using those china made discs , which have a small brush incorporated to brush the lens off , when those sectors are being read. this is not advised from Sony , it causes more harm than damage . That is why I asked him, to know if he meant some other method. And at the bold part. I know the replacement does not last long, its much better to replace the PS3 if the lens stop working. edit: Thanks Bikram, Ill check those out. Didn't see that video when I posted.
