The PS3 Disc Reading Problem (SOD) thread

reaper,

i own a ps3 myself and it just got bricked a few days back so the feeling's mutual.

BR drive won't read any discs and this happened while playing COD4.

now we both can do one of two things,

1)sit tight and wait for another f/w update from sony that resolves the issue

or

2)fix it ourselves. now when COD4 screwd the BR drive what it did was screw the drive/spindle motor.

i pulled apart the ps3 and tried everything to get the damn drive to read discs.

well after i took apart the drive i realized the drive keys are stored on the logic board which is replaceable.

the laser is just fine but the spindle motor i guess is burnt out.

all that needs to be done is to switch the logic boards between the burnt drive and a spare drive.

well from what i can make out the drive is fine actually.

the drive is split into 4 main parts

1)optical unit

2)slot loading mechanism

3)logic board

4)drive/spindle motor

the 1st 3 work just fine. the whole drive kinda works like this.

when you load a disc, the slot loading mechanism sucks in the disc, mounts it onto the spindle and the optical unit resets its position under the inner side of the disc and then the spindle which is nothing but a brushless DC motor with stepper charcteristics rotates the disc in four steps to detect type and content of the loaded disc media. i can hear the motor trying to rotate the spindle due to 4 clicking sounds but it doesn't spin. and thats why the activity/reading/busy icon appears on the top righthand screen.

well i'd suggest that everyone who is facing this problem wait until sony releases the next f/w that probably resets this motor. and when i say reset the motor i mean that i'm hoping sony built a failsafe mechanism into the drive to disable the motor, incase it was on the verge of exceeding a threshold rpm limit.

sounds a bit farfetched but you never know.

if not, then the only option left is to either replace the drive or the motor, both of which are tough. the motor is a nidec brushless dc motor and i haven't been able to find any spare parts on the internet. replacing a drive will be as big a headache as trying to replace the motor since we're located in india and it's tough talking down to those techies at the sony service center let alone doing our best to explain the situation to them.

since the drive keys are located on the logic board(which i'm assuming), one can just swap logic boards between the faulty and spare drive. again i'm saying this because i read somewhere, someone had the same problem and replaced his 60gb BR drive with that from a 80gb model and it wouldn't work. it would read and detect but would just display a blank screen upon trying to load.

plus the problem i guess is not just due to COD4 or just the f/w, but i have a feeling it's interelated between the two.

people face the same problem in this descending order of games a)COD4 b)RFOM c) AC d)NFS PS.

so it could be a problem with the media-ROM quality itself. maybe the initial batches were bad in terms of quality.

also people with HK ps3 models are complaining the most. all of this adds up to a very confusing pic finally.

i think even i am getting warning signs from my ps3. happened in fifa08 only. i finish playing online, and then returned to the arena. after that i press the ps button and then choose "quit game" and choose yes to confirm. instead of quitting the game, the ps3 reboots :sign_banhim: . it has happened thrice and only today a few minutes ago. is it going the same way as what ppl say happened with some cod4 copies?

^ welcome to the forums pixeljunkie :sign_banhim:

one Q - if your assumptions are correct and the drive motor is indeed fried, a firmware fix by sony wont really help, will it? it might prevent others from facing this issue (by limiting the maximum motor speed), but not those already affected by the 'spin of death'...

lol i don't play any of those games so i think i'm fine. Btw 40GB NTSC/J "HK" PS3.

still i wouldn take chances. stick to demos until the next f/w :P just to be on the safer side

your problems aren't the same as mine and reaper's but i have read that the gaame freezes result in completely bricking the ps3, welcome the yellow light of death :D

where's the rest of the welcoming party?!? ;) anyways thanks vini :)

hoping that sony would've built in a failsafe mechanism for turning off the motor incase it exceeded the threshold rpm value.
