what parts are these - looks like the laser, motor and logic board are all here...? so you will now attempt to swap the logic board from this unit with your original logic board and then attach these parts to your PS3?? if it works out, please post a step by step pictorial guide for all us n00bs...

its a solid metal frame that houses the optical unit in the center suspended by two sled rails. the optical unit moves freely bidirectiononally(up&down) over the rails with the help of the sled motor which is to the left along the left border of the metal frame. the drive/spindle motor is at the very top.

ps. i'm a noob at this myself:)

pixeljunkie - is the spin-of-death triggered only when using a combo of fw2.01 and cod4 - has your research revealed any other potential red flags? is fw2.0 affected by this as well (it might be 'coz 2.01 was released soon after and most blindly upgraded to 2.01 in order to play online)?

this particular problem started showin up in very very small numbers after the 1.93 f/w update.

1.93 was released on the 16th of september and people started complaining their drives failing in minute numbers.

don't forget COD4 was released on November 6th after 2.0 f/w update and this kinda added fuel to the fire.

so most 9 outta 10 ppl who bought COD4 would have already updated to 1.93, let alone 2.00.

investigating further, i suspected the victim, i.e, BR/DVD drives may have been weak and faulty.

probably lack lustre QC.

so to answer your qn vini, the murderer is f/w 1.93 and COD4 is the murder weapon.

RFOM, AC and NFS PS are accessories to murder.

f/w 2.0 and 2.01 were probably fake identities used for covering up tracks.

but the real crook is still at large and thats SONY!!!!the mastermind behind all of this.

costs 25 USD compared to what you get in the states.

will keep you guys updated:)

she's coming down this 23rd and i'll probably pick it up during that week.

So this is all an educated guess?

Also, is this a problem with NTSC/J consoles or all regions at large?

i'd like to think of it as an eductaed guess backed up with a month's worth of research.

more or less widespread. 60GB NTSC/J consoles are widely affected along with NTSC/US models. while there are a few instances of certain 40GB NTSC/US models.

one thing is for certain though, the bluray drive is not as solid as it seems. even the PS2 had the same issue a year from the day it was launched. call it deja vu
